Barnehurst Home Care: Visits and Live-in Support

Home care in Barnehurst DA7, across the bungalows and 1920s and 1930s semis between Erith Road, Barnehurst station and Mayplace Road East.

Yes, we provide home care in Barnehurst, as regular visits or with a live-in carer. Barnehurst is one stop beyond Bexleyheath on a line that runs through Lewisham, where our office is, so visiting care is realistic here, though we confirm visit times only once we know a carer is free for them. It starts with a free assessment at home and a written care plan.

Is Barnehurst close enough for daily visits?

Usually, yes. Bexleyheath line trains run from Lewisham to Barnehurst station, and the 89 bus runs the whole way from Lewisham station to Barnehurst station via Blackheath, Welling and Bexleyheath. The 229 links Barnehurst with Erith one way and Bexleyheath, Bexley village and Sidcup the other. That gives carers more than one way in, which helps when trains are disrupted.

Parking is free on most streets. The Barnehurst Station controlled parking zone covers the roads around the station, including the Lake District roads described below, Lyndhurst Road and part of Erith Road. Bexley's social care permit lets care staff on duty park in resident bays.

Coniston, Grasmere, Windermere: the estate roads

Barnehurst exists because of the railway. Land was sold in the 1880s for the Bexleyheath line, the station was opened to encourage house-building, and the place took its name from Colonel Barne of May Place, vice-chairman of the railway company. The Barnehurst Estate followed in 1926, and much of what was built after was by the local builder W.H. Wedlock. Near the station, the roads carry Lake District names: Coniston, Grasmere, Windermere, Thirlmere, Rydal and Bowness.

The houses are interwar semis and a good number of bungalows, on gently sloping streets. The bungalows matter for care. With everything on one floor, there is no stairlift question, no commode on the landing, and a carer can help someone from bed to bathroom to kitchen without a staircase in between. In the semis, the usual Bexley pattern applies: the bathroom is upstairs, and it is worth talking about stairs early.

The local GP is in the parking zone. Lyndhurst Road Medical Centre at 41 Lyndhurst Road is a short walk from the station, on a road inside the Barnehurst Station zone. If a carer is going with someone to an appointment, we plan for the walk or the parking in advance.

How do I get a care needs assessment in Barnehurst?

Barnehurst shares the Bexleyheath post town and is part of the London Borough of Bexley. Call Bexley's Adult Social Care Single Point of Contact on 020 8303 7777, or fill in the council's online self-assessment; any council library or OneBexley charity will help with the form. The assessment may be done by a charity working for the council.

If you are eligible, a financial assessment follows. Council money can be paid to you as a direct payment and used to pay an agency like ours, and some people with mainly health needs qualify for NHS Continuing Healthcare. We do not quote until after our own free assessment. Our Bexley home care page covers the council process and hospital discharge in more detail.

Live-in care in a bungalow

A live-in carer needs their own bedroom, so a two-bedroom bungalow or a three-bedroom semi usually works. Live-in care suits someone who needs help at several points in the day or a couple who both need some support, and it means the carer is already in the house in the morning. Carers take daily breaks, which we agree with you before anyone starts.

A break for the family carer

If you look after a parent or partner in Barnehurst, respite care can be a regular sit-in so you can get out, or a live-in carer for a week or two. Ask Bexley or Carers' Support Bexley for a carer's assessment, which is how council-funded breaks are arranged.

Barnehurst FAQs

Questions families ask us about Barnehurst. If yours is not here, ask us directly.

Ask a question
Mum lives in a bungalow. Does she still need a full assessment?

Yes. A bungalow takes the stairs out of the picture, but we still look at the bathroom, the step at the door, where she sits and sleeps, and what help she needs through the day before we write her care plan.

Is Barnehurst part of Bexleyheath or Erith?

Neither, strictly. It is its own neighbourhood, separated from North Bexleyheath by the A220 Erith Road, and it uses Bexleyheath DA7 addresses. Either way it is in the London Borough of Bexley, which handles assessments and funding.

Can the carer come on the 89 bus if the trains are off?

The 89 runs from Lewisham station to Barnehurst station, so it is a useful back-up. Carers plan their own routes, and we will tell you if a disruption affects a visit.

Can you help Dad get to Lyndhurst Road Medical Centre?

Yes, a carer can go with him to appointments if it is arranged in advance and included in his care plan.
