Home Care in Slade Green, DA8

Care at home in the railway cottages, post-war council-built streets and newer houses of Slade Green, between Erith, Crayford and the Thames marshes.

Yes, we provide home care in Slade Green, from our office in Lewisham. Slade Green is one of the furthest corners of Bexley from us, so live-in care is the most dependable option, and regular visits are possible when we have a carer free for the times you need. Every arrangement starts with a free assessment at home and a written care plan.

How far is Slade Green from your office?

Roughly 35 to 45 minutes by train on Southeastern's North Kent line. One bus also does the whole trip: the 89 starts at Lewisham station, a short walk from our office on Lewisham High Street, and runs through Blackheath, Welling, Bexleyheath and Barnehurst to finish at Forest Road by Slade Green station.

Early-morning and late bedtime calls out here are the hardest for us to staff. A midday visit, a weekly home help session or a sit-in afternoon is easier.

Railway cottages and post-war streets

Slade Green grew up around the railway. The depot by the station was built to maintain steam engines for the South Eastern and Chatham Railway, and by 1910 a railway village of 158 houses had gone up for the men who worked there; the cottages in Oak Road are now a conservation area. After the war came more than a thousand new homes and the road bridge that carries Bridge Road over the line.

Cottages and post-war terraces tend to have one steep staircase and the only bathroom at the top. If climbing those stairs has become a struggle, we will talk through a stairlift, a commode or moving a bed downstairs, and a council occupational therapist can assess for equipment. Our carers then plan personal care around the house as it is.

Two buses worth knowing. The 428 runs from Slade Green station through Crayford and Dartford to Darent Valley Hospital and on to Bluewater, which makes it the route for outpatient appointments and for a proper shop. The 99 heads the other way, through Erith and Belvedere towards Woolwich. A carer on a companionship visit can do either journey with you.

Coming home from Darent Valley

The nearest acute hospital is Darent Valley Hospital in Dartford, run by Dartford and Gravesham NHS Trust. The hospital is in Kent but the home is in London, so it is the London Borough of Bexley's adult social care, not Kent's, that is responsible for support once you are home. Bexley works on a Home First basis, with discharge-to-assess support at home while longer-term needs are worked out.

Ring us while the ward is still planning the discharge. Given the distance, a few days' notice makes a real difference to whether we can staff the first visits. See our hospital discharge support page.

Getting help from Bexley Council

Slade Green residents go through the same front door as the rest of the borough: the Single Point of Contact team on 020 8303 7777, or the online self-assessment on the council's website. The assessment may be carried out by a OneBexley charity on the council's behalf. Council funding is means-tested and can be taken as a direct payment to pay us; we quote our own charges after our assessment. Our Bexley home care page covers the borough-wide detail.

Live-in care in a Slade Green home

Because distance is the main obstacle to daily visits here, live-in care is often the more reliable answer. The carer moves in, so travel stops mattering. The one requirement is a spare bedroom for the carer, which many of the larger post-war family houses have and a smaller cottage may not. It also suits couples, with one carer supporting both partners.

A break for the person doing the caring

If you look after a husband, wife or parent in Slade Green, Carers' Support Bexley (020 8302 8011) can carry out a carer's assessment and advise on short breaks. From us, respite can be a live-in carer for a week or two while you have a holiday or a hospital stay of your own, or occasional sit-in time if we can staff it.

Slade Green FAQs

Slade Green questions

Questions families ask us about Slade Green. If yours is not here, ask us directly.

Ask a question
Dad lives in one of the old railway cottages. Will a live-in carer fit?

Only if there is a bedroom the carer can have to themselves. If the house has two bedrooms and both are in use, visiting care or a downstairs rearrangement may work better. We will look at the house with you at the assessment.

Mum's address says Erith. Is she in Slade Green?

Slade Green shares the DA8 Erith postcode, so many addresses here carry an Erith post town. It makes no difference to us: we cover both, and both are in the London Borough of Bexley.

Can a carer take Mum to her clinic at Darent Valley?

Yes, if it is part of the care plan. The 428 bus runs from Slade Green station to the hospital, and a carer can go with her, help at the appointment and bring her home. Tell us the appointment dates so we can plan the time.

Can you do a bedtime call every night in Slade Green?

Possibly, but late calls this far from Lewisham are the hardest for us to cover. Ring with the times you need and we will tell you honestly what we can promise. If we cannot staff it reliably, live-in care is the alternative.
