Home Care in Bexleyheath
Visiting care, live-in care and respite in DA6 and DA7, from the Broadway and Market Place out to Upton, Danson Park and Barnehurst.
Yes, we provide home care in Bexleyheath: visits for personal care, medication and company where we have a carer free for your times, and live-in care anywhere in the town. The 89 bus runs direct from Lewisham, where our office is, through Blackheath and Welling to the Broadway, so Bexleyheath is within easy reach. Care always begins with a free home assessment and a written care plan.
Bexleyheath, street by street
Bexleyheath is the borough's main town, and most people picture the pedestrianised Broadway with its clock tower, put up in 1912 to mark a coronation, and Christ Church, the parish church, standing on the Broadway itself. The council's Civic Offices are close by. The railway station is not in the centre: it sits on Avenue Road, north of the shops, which matters if someone with a walking frame is being told to "take the train".
A few streets from the shops is Upton, the old hamlet where Philip Webb built Red House for William Morris in 1859; it is now run by the National Trust. Danson Park forms the western edge, between Bexleyheath and Welling. To the east the town runs into Barnehurst, which shares the Bexleyheath post town. Addresses are DA6 or DA7, and all of them are in the London Borough of Bexley, so the council route is the same throughout.
The semi with the bathroom upstairs
Most homes here are interwar semis and short terraces, with some Victorian cottages close to the Broadway and newer flats in the town centre. The typical semi has one straight, steep staircase and the only bathroom on the first floor, so the question of the stairs comes up early.
- Before a stairlift: a commode downstairs and a bed moved into the front room can carry someone through a bad patch, and a carer can help set that up safely.
- Washing: if the bath is no longer manageable, ask the council's occupational therapy service about rails or a level-access shower at the same time as the care assessment.
- The spare room: a three-bedroom semi usually has one, which is what makes live-in care practical here.
- Town-centre flats: lifts make life easier, but a one-bedroom flat cannot take a live-in carer, so visits are the usual answer.
How carers reach you
Besides the 89, the Broadway is served by the 96, 422, 486, B11 and B12, and trains on the Bexleyheath line stop at Bexleyheath and Barnehurst. Parking is controlled in the Bexleyheath Town Centre and Bexleyheath Station zones, while most residential streets further out are free. Bexley issues social care permits that let care staff on duty park in resident and pay bays. Even so, visiting care depends on having a carer free at the times you need, so tell us the times and we will give you a straight answer before anything is agreed.
How much does home care cost in Bexleyheath?
We do not publish prices. After the free assessment we give you a written quote based on the visits or live-in support agreed. If you want help from Bexley Council, it starts with a needs assessment: use the council's online self-assessment or ring the Single Point of Contact on 020 8303 7777. If needs are eligible, a financial assessment (the means test) decides how much the person pays. The council's share can be taken as a direct payment and used to pay an agency such as ours. Where needs are mainly health needs, ask the GP or ward about an NHS Continuing Healthcare assessment. Our guide to paying for care explains each route; for the wider borough picture see home care in Bexley.
Something not right with a service? Healthwatch Bexley is based in Devonshire Road, DA6, a short walk from the Broadway. It collects residents' views on health and care services and can point you to the right complaints route, whoever the provider is.
Live-in care and respite
The back bedroom or box room of a DA6 or DA7 semi is usually enough for a live-in carer, and because the carer lives in, the 89 and the train timetable stop mattering. If a husband, wife or adult child is doing the caring, respite can be a regular sit while they get to the Broadway, or a live-in carer covering a holiday. Carers' Support Bexley carries out carers' assessments for the council and is the place to ask about council-funded breaks.

Bexleyheath questions
Questions families ask us about Bexleyheath. If yours is not here, ask us directly.
Ask a questionDo you cover Upton, North Bexleyheath and Barnehurst?
Yes. We cover all of DA6 and DA7, including Upton, the streets around Red House, North Bexleyheath and Barnehurst. Live-in care is available anywhere; visits depend on carer availability for the route and times.
Will a visiting carer be able to park near the Broadway?
Closer in, the roads fall inside the Town Centre and Station controlled parking zones. Care staff can use Bexley's social care permit to park in resident and pay bays while on duty.
Dad is coming home from Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Woolwich. When should we call?
As soon as a discharge date is being talked about. Queen Elizabeth is the main hospital for this side of the borough, and the earlier we know, the better the chance we can staff the first visits. See hospital discharge support.
My parents are in a two-bedroom flat in the town centre. Could live-in care work for both of them?
Possibly, if the second bedroom can be given over to the carer. One live-in carer can give full personal care to one partner and lighter help to the other.
