Charlton Home Care, SE7

Visiting care, live-in carers and respite for families in Charlton: the Village and Charlton Park, the streets down to the station and The Valley, and the new riverside flats.

We do provide home care in Charlton. The 54 and 380 buses run from Lewisham through Blackheath Standard to Charlton Village, and Charlton station is on two Southeastern lines, so carers can reach most of SE7 easily. Care starts with a free home assessment and a written care plan, and we check carer availability before promising particular visit times.

How do I get a carer for an elderly parent in Charlton?

Two routes run side by side, and you can use both.

Privately, through us. Ring 0203 375 4047. We visit, look at the house and agree a plan with your parent, then send a written quote. You decide whether to go ahead.

Through Royal Greenwich. Ask the council's Contact Assessment Team for a needs assessment using the online form or on 020 8921 2304. If your parent is eligible, a means test sets their contribution. They can take the council's share as a direct payment and use it to pay us. How the charge is worked out is on the Greenwich home care page.

Help for carers is on your doorstep

Charlton is home to Greenwich Carers Centre, at The Stables, 76 Hornfair Road, by Charlton Park. It is the borough's carers' charity, and it is also where Greenwich Dementia Support, run by South East London Mind, holds a monthly memory café. If you look after a husband, wife or parent here, it is the obvious place to ask about your own carer's assessment and about breaks.

For adult mental health, the Oxleas NHS Recovery Team is at 68 The Heights, also in SE7.

From the Village to the river

Charlton runs downhill from the old village on the ridge to the Thames, and the house type changes with the height:

  • Around The Village and Charlton Park. The Jacobean Charlton House, built between 1607 and 1612, stands at the centre of the old village. The streets around it have period terraces and interwar council cottages.
  • The slopes. Roads such as Charlton Church Lane drop steeply from St Luke's Church down to the station and Woolwich Road. Victorian and Edwardian terraces on these hills often have steps up from the pavement and a steep staircase inside. A walk to the shops that was easy ten years ago can become the hardest part of the week.
  • The riverside. The flat land by the Thames was industrial from Victorian times. Its new blocks have lifts and level access, which suits a wheelchair, a hoist or someone coming home after a fall.

Match days. The Valley has been Charlton Athletic's ground since 1919, apart from seven years away between 1985 and 1992. On match days, extra parking restrictions apply around the ground, on top of the controlled parking zones near the station. Tell us your street and we will plan visit times around them. Royal Greenwich also issues a carer parking permit, applied for by the person receiving care.

Hospital and going home

Most Charlton residents are admitted to Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Woolwich, which the 486 reaches from Charlton Village and the 161 from Charlton station. On the western edge towards Westcombe Park, an ambulance may go to University Hospital Lewisham instead, which the 54 serves. Wherever your relative is, call us before the discharge date and we will say what discharge support we can cover.

Live-in care and short breaks

A live-in carer needs a bedroom of their own, so the terraced houses on the hill usually work and a one-bedroom riverside flat usually does not. Respite care can be a weekly sit-in so you can get to the Carers Centre or simply out of the house. It can also be a live-in carer for a fortnight while you are away.

Charlton FAQs

Asked about care in Charlton

Questions families ask us about Charlton. If yours is not here, ask us directly.

Ask a question
Dad lives near The Valley. Will match days affect his visits?

They can, if the carer drives. We check the fixture list and either schedule around it or send a carer who comes by train or bus. Charlton station is a short walk from the ground.

Mum goes to the memory café at the Carers Centre. Can a carer take her?

Yes. Taking her there and back can be part of a companionship visit. Many people with dementia manage an outing better with someone they already know.

Is Charlton covered by Greenwich or Lewisham council?

All of Charlton, SE7, is in the Royal Borough of Greenwich, so the care assessment comes from Royal Greenwich, even though our office is in Lewisham.

The house is on a steep hill and she can't manage the front steps now. What can be done?

Ask the council's Contact Assessment Team for an occupational therapy assessment, which can lead to rails or other equipment at the door. Meanwhile, a carer can help her in and out safely so she still gets out. We will look at the steps when we come to assess.
