Home Care in Silvertown and the Royal Docks

Visiting carers, live-in care and short breaks along the riverside strip of E16, from Royal Wharf and West Silvertown to Thames Barrier Park and North Woolwich.

Yes, we provide home care in Silvertown. After a free assessment at home and a written care plan, a carer visits at the times you agree, or a live-in carer moves in. Our office is in Lewisham, and Silvertown is one of the easier parts of Newham for us to reach, though regular visits still depend on having a carer free at your times.

One long road, three different places

Silvertown is strung out along North Woolwich Road between Royal Victoria Dock and the river, and the homes change as you go east. At the western end, around Royal Crest Avenue in West Silvertown and the Royal Wharf development by Pontoon Dock, almost everything is modern flats. In the middle sit the Tate & Lyle sugar refinery, Thames Barrier Park and the runway of London City Airport. Past King George V station, North Woolwich has older terraces and council blocks around Albert Road and the ferry.

That shapes the care. A Royal Wharf flat usually has a lift and level floors; a North Woolwich terrace is more likely to have narrow stairs and a bathroom where a grab rail or bath board makes the difference. We look at this at the assessment.

How do carers get to Silvertown from Lewisham?

More easily than most people expect. The 129 bus now runs from Lewisham station through Greenwich and North Greenwich, under the river, and on to West Silvertown, Pontoon Dock, Thames Barrier and London City Airport. Carers can also take a train to Woolwich Arsenal and the DLR one stop north to King George V, or cross on the free Woolwich Ferry to North Woolwich.

Parking is the catch for anyone who drives. The Royal Docks East and Royal Docks West zones run Monday to Sunday, 8am to 6.30pm, so weekend visits are not exempt. A resident who has no off-road space can buy a Residential Carer parking permit for visiting carers. The council lists it at £11, and it is valid only in the zone printed on it.

A GP at the North Woolwich end. The Practice Albert Road is at Kennard Street Health Centre, 76 Albert Road (E16 2DY); see its NHS listing. If you register a parent who has moved to Silvertown to be near you, tell the practice a care agency is involved so that medication changes reach the care plan.

New flats, new neighbours

In a new riverside block, an older person who has moved in recently may not know anyone in the building yet. A companionship visit can be a slow walk through Thames Barrier Park or along the dock edge, or a trip on the 473 bus up to Newham University Hospital for an appointment.

Who pays for home care in Silvertown?

Newham Council decides on funded care. Ask its Access to Adult Social Care Team for a needs assessment on 020 8430 2000, option 2, or use the online form linked from the council's contacting adult social care page. A financial assessment follows, and the council can pay its share as a direct payment to an agency you choose. NHS Continuing Healthcare may pay in full where the needs are mainly health needs. If you pay privately, we give you a written quote after our assessment. Our Newham home care page covers the council route and hospital discharge in more detail.

Live-in care by the river

For someone who needs help day and night, a live-in carer takes the journey out of the question. The carer needs their own bedroom. Second bedrooms in new-build flats can be small, so we check it first.

Breaks for the family carer

If you are doing most of the caring, respite care can be a regular afternoon off, a run of visits while you work away, or a live-in carer for a week or two. Newham's carers' service, Newham Carers Community, is run by Age UK East London (020 3954 3143), and the council's carers' assessment is how you ask for funded breaks.

Silvertown FAQs

Silvertown questions

Questions families ask us about Silvertown. If yours is not here, ask us directly.

Ask a question
Mum lives in North Woolwich, past the airport. Is that still within reach?

Usually, yes. King George V on the DLR and the Woolwich Ferry both bring carers across from the south side of the river. Whether we can cover a fixed daily time still depends on carer availability, so call us with the times and we will give you a straight answer.

Dad's flat at Royal Wharf has a concierge. Do carers need to be registered with the building?

Often they do. We agree the access arrangement with you and the managing agent before care starts, whether that is a fob, a code or a key safe, and we write it into the care plan.

Our street is in a Royal Docks parking zone. Will a carer get a ticket on a Sunday?

They could, because the Royal Docks zones run seven days a week. Most of our carers come by bus, DLR or train, but if one drives, the council's Residential Carer permit covers the zone printed on it.

Can a carer go with my mother to Newham University Hospital?

Yes, if it is in the care plan. The 473 bus runs from North Woolwich through Silvertown towards the hospital in Plaistow, and the carer can go with her to the appointment and back home again.
