Home Care in Canning Town
Visiting carers, live-in care and short breaks for families in E16, from the estates off the Barking Road to the new blocks around Rathbone Market and the station.
Yes, we provide home care in Canning Town, and of everywhere in Newham it is the easiest for us to reach. Our carers come from Lewisham on the DLR and the Jubilee line, a trip of roughly 25 to 30 minutes. Every arrangement starts with a free assessment in the person's own home and a written care plan, then regular visits or a live-in carer.
Estates, towers and a long regeneration
Canning Town grew up around the docks, where the River Lea meets the Barking Road, and most of its older residents still live in the council housing built after the war. That includes tower blocks: Ronan Point, the block that partly collapsed in 1968, stood here. Alongside the older estates there are now mid- and high-rise flats from the regeneration around Rathbone Market and the station, plus a few streets of older terraces.
For care, the building matters as much as the person. In a tower block the lift decides whether someone can get to a hospital appointment or just to the shops. In a newer block the lifts and level floors make wheelchairs and hoists easier, but the bathroom is often a bath with a shower over it. At the assessment we look at both: how the person gets in and out of the building, and how they get in and out of the bath.
Can visiting carers really get to Canning Town from Lewisham?
Yes, more reliably than to most of north-east London. Canning Town station has the Jubilee line and the DLR in one interchange, and buses including the 5, 69, 115, 147, 300, 309, 323, 330 and 474 stop nearby. That makes morning and evening calls practical. As with any visiting package, we can only confirm the exact times once we know a carer is free for them, so call with the pattern you need and we will tell you plainly whether we can cover it.
Dementia support on the doorstep. Newham's council-commissioned memory cafe meets at the Canning Town Community Neighbourhood Centre at 18 Rathbone Market, run by Newham New Deal Partnership, whose base is St Luke's Community Centre on Tarling Road. Diagnosis and follow-up come through Newham Memory Services in Plaistow, usually on a GP referral. The council's dementia page lists both. A companionship visit can include getting someone to the cafe and home again.
Coming home from Newham Hospital
The local hospital for Canning Town is Newham University Hospital on Glen Road in Plaistow, run by Barts Health; serious injuries go to the Royal London in Whitechapel, run by the same trust. If someone will struggle at home, ward staff refer them to Newham's Integrated Discharge Hub, and the council can offer free reablement for up to six weeks. The council explains the options on its help leaving hospital page. When reablement ends, or if the family wants more help than it provides, our hospital discharge support can follow on. Ask the ward for a likely discharge date so we can plan the first visits.
The nearest GP practices include The Ruiz Medical Practice at St Luke's Square (E16 1HT) and Star Lane Medical Centre on Star Lane (E16 4QH), both listed on the NHS website.
How much does home care cost in Canning Town?
It depends on how many visits are needed and how long each one is, so we give a written quote after the free assessment, never before. Newham Council may pay some or all of it. You request a needs assessment from the Access to Adult Social Care Team on 020 8430 2000, option 2, or online through the council's contact adult social care page. If the person is eligible, a financial assessment follows, and the council says people with savings over £23,250 may have to pay in full. Council funding can be taken as a direct payment and used with an agency you choose. Our Newham home care page covers the borough-wide routes, and the paying for care guide explains NHS Continuing Healthcare.
Live-in care in a Canning Town flat
A live-in carer needs a bedroom of their own. In a two-bedroom council flat where one person lives alone, that is usually possible; in a crowded family flat it often is not. Where it works, one carer can support a couple, and it covers nights in a way visits cannot.
A break for the person doing the caring
Many people here are looked after by a daughter, son or partner living nearby. Respite care can be a regular afternoon, a week of extra visits, or a live-in carer while you go away. Newham Carers Community, run by Age UK East London, can also help you get a carer's assessment.

Canning Town questions
Questions families ask us about Canning Town. If yours is not here, ask us directly.
Ask a questionThe lift in Mum's block keeps breaking down. What happens on those days?
Carers use the stairs, so visits go ahead. The bigger problem is that she may be stuck indoors, so we plan for it: food and medication kept stocked, appointments rearranged if needed, and a note in the care plan of who to tell about the repair.
Dad is being moved to a new flat as part of the regeneration. Can care carry on?
Yes. Let us know the moving date and we will reassess at the new flat, update the care plan, and check that equipment such as a commode or bath board has moved with him.
Can a carer take my husband to the memory cafe at Rathbone Market?
Yes, if it is part of his care plan. A companionship visit can be timed around the cafe session, with the carer going there and back with him.
Is Canning Town in your visiting area, or only live-in?
Both. Canning Town is the part of Newham closest to our Lewisham office, so visiting care is realistic here, subject to having a carer free for your times.
