Home Care in New Cross and Telegraph Hill

Care at home in SE14 for older people and for disabled adults of any age, from Hatcham and the streets around Goldsmiths up to the villas of Telegraph Hill.

Yes. We provide home care in New Cross for older people and for disabled adults: personal care, medication support, help around the home, company, and live-in care. Our office is in SE13, a short bus or train ride away, so regular visits are often possible, depending on whether a carer is free at your times. We start with a free assessment at home and a written care plan.

Not only a student area

New Cross is best known for Goldsmiths and the junction where New Cross Road (A2), Lewisham Way (A20) and Queen's Road (A202) meet. The many student lets hide the long-standing residents in the council estates and Victorian terraces of Hatcham and New Cross Gate. Some have lived here for most of their lives. Others are younger adults with a physical disability, a sensory impairment or a learning disability, living in a flat of their own or with their parents.

Our CQC registration covers adults under 65 as well as older people, and it includes physical disabilities and sensory impairments. Support for a 30-year-old wheelchair user might mean getting up and showered in time for work or college. For someone else it might mean help to cook, keep on top of appointments and get out in the evening.

Telegraph Hill's houses

South of the main road, Telegraph Hill is a conservation area of villas built by the Haberdashers' Company, mostly around 1871, on wide streets around the two halves of Telegraph Hill Park. The hill took its name from a semaphore telegraph station that stood on the summit from about 1795. The streets are steep in places, which matters for anyone using a wheelchair or a walking frame, and many of the large houses are now split into flats with shared stairs and no lift.

A top-floor conversion on the hill and a ground-floor council flat near the station need different care plans. In the conversion, the questions are whether equipment can get up the stairs and whether there is room to use it once it is there. In the ground-floor flat, the questions are about getting out of the house and what happens in the evening. We look at both at the assessment.

Two stations and a crossroads

New Cross station has Southeastern trains towards Lewisham and the Overground Windrush line, which terminates here. New Cross Gate has the Windrush line towards Crystal Palace and West Croydon, and Southern trains to London Bridge. Those links make the area straightforward for carers to reach. If you are planning the week, Lewisham's list of parking zones does not include one named after New Cross or Telegraph Hill, so check the signs in your road before you assume parking is free. On the western edge, towards Peckham and the Old Kent Road, some addresses are in Southwark.

Day support for learning disability and autism. The Mulberry Hub at 15 Amersham Vale, SE14 6LE, run by the charity Choice Support, is one of the council's day opportunity hubs, with arts, sensory sessions and digital skills for adults with learning disabilities and autism. Home care can fit around those days, with help getting ready in the morning and support again in the evening.

How do I get Lewisham Council to assess my son or daughter?

For a young person already known to children's social care, the move to adult services is planned with their social worker. Anyone else can request a needs assessment through Lewisham Adult Social Care on 020 8314 7777 or the council's online self-assessment. If the council finds eligible needs, it sets a personal budget, which can be taken as a direct payment and used to pay an agency like ours. The council also financially assesses what the person pays. We give a written quote after our own assessment. The Lewisham borough page has more on carers' support and discharge.

Live-in support and breaks for parents

Where there is a spare room, live-in care means a disabled adult has someone living with them in their own flat, with the carer's daily break and night's sleep planned in. Parents who have cared for decades often need a break most of all, and respite care can cover a regular evening off or a week away. The council's carers' service, run by Imago, offers carers' assessments and support.

Questions from New Cross

Questions families ask us about New Cross. If yours is not here, ask us directly.

Ask a question
My daughter is 24 and uses a wheelchair. Do you support younger adults?

Yes. Our registration covers adults of all ages with physical disabilities. Her care plan would be built around her routine, including work, study and evenings out.

Can a carer help my brother get to the Mulberry Hub?

We can help him get ready and support him on the journey if that is in his care plan. Places at the hub itself are arranged through Lewisham Adult Social Care, not through us.

Mum's flat on Telegraph Hill is up two flights of stairs. Can she still have a hoist?

Sometimes. It depends on the width of the stairs and the size of the rooms. We will look at it with you, and the council's occupational therapists can advise on equipment.

We live near the Old Kent Road. Which council do we contact?

Check the council tax bill, because the Southwark boundary is close. We can provide private care either way. Funded care has to come through the council you pay council tax to.

Is there an evening service for someone who needs help getting to bed?

Evening and bedtime visits are part of what we offer. Whether we can cover your times depends on carer availability, so call us and we will tell you honestly.
