Home Care in Peckham, SE15

Yes, we provide home care in Peckham. It starts with a free assessment in your home and a written care plan. Then we arrange visiting care, which depends on a carer being free at the times you need, or a live-in carer. Peckham is one of the nearest parts of Southwark to our Lewisham office, a short ride on the 436 bus.

Rye Lane, the Rye and the streets in between

Rye Lane is Peckham's main shopping street, a long run of African and Caribbean grocers, hair and fabric shops between Peckham High Street and Peckham Rye station. At its southern end are the open common of Peckham Rye and Peckham Rye Park, opened in 1894 on land around the old Homestall Farm. To the west, Bellenden Road and the streets around it are a quieter grid of Victorian terraces and small independent shops.

Older Peckham residents tend to live in one of two kinds of home. North of the high street, the North Peckham estates were rebuilt in a large regeneration programme in the late 1990s and early 2000s, and many people live in low-rise council blocks and newer social housing. South and west of Rye Lane, the Victorian terraces are mostly split into upper and lower flats. In the upper flats, a steep internal staircase is usually the only way in, and that staircase shapes the care plan more than anything else. It affects whether a personal care visit can include a shower or has to be a strip wash, whether a hospital bed will fit, and whether someone can safely go out at all after a fall.

Close to our office, so visits are more realistic

We have one office, on Lewisham High Street, and none in Southwark. Peckham is close to it, though. The 436 bus runs from Lewisham through New Cross into Peckham and on to Camberwell, and trains connect Lewisham with Peckham Rye via Nunhead in a few minutes. Peckham Rye station has London Overground Windrush line, Southeastern, Southern and Thameslink services, and Queens Road Peckham has the Windrush line and Southern. That makes regular visiting care easier to arrange here than in most of the borough. We still match visits to carer availability, so tell us the times you need at the first call and we will say honestly whether we can cover them.

Most Peckham residential streets are inside a controlled parking zone, and council estates run their own permit schemes. When we plan visits, we work out how each carer will travel and where they will park.

The Lister on Peckham Road. GP services for much of central Peckham are based at the Lister Primary Care Centre, 101 Peckham Road, SE15 5LJ. We work with whichever practice you are registered with, for example when medication changes after a stay in King's College Hospital on Denmark Hill, the nearest major hospital.

Asking Southwark Council for a care assessment from SE15

Peckham is in the London Borough of Southwark, so contact Southwark's Older People and Physical Disabilities (OPPD) team, whether the person is over 65, has dementia or has a physical disability. Use the council's online referral page, or call 020 7525 3324 if you cannot use the form or need support urgently. The council may first suggest community services, and not everyone it assesses is offered council home care. You can also arrange care with us privately and ask the council to assess at the same time. Our Southwark home care page covers the borough-wide picture.

How much does home care in Peckham cost?

We cannot give a price on this page, because it depends on how many visits are needed, how long they are and what happens during them. We give you a written quote after the free assessment. If Southwark Council arranges the care, it means-tests your contribution, and its online contribution calculator gives an early estimate. People with a primary health need may qualify for NHS Continuing Healthcare, which is not means-tested. Our paying for care guide sets out both routes.

Live-in care in a split terrace

A live-in carer needs a bedroom of their own, and in a one-bedroom upper flat off Bellenden Road there usually is not one. A two-bedroom maisonette on an estate is often easier. If space allows, live-in care suits a couple well, with one carer supporting both partners in their own home.

A break for family carers

Respite care can be a few sitting visits a week so you can get out, or a carer moving in for a fortnight while you go away. For someone with dementia, Link Age Southwark's dementia service is based just south of the Rye at Tell Grove in East Dulwich. Southwark also offers family carers a free carer's assessment.

Peckham FAQs

Peckham questions

Questions families ask us about Peckham. If yours is not here, ask us directly.

Ask a question
My father lives in an upper flat with a steep staircase. Can you still help?

Usually, yes. At the assessment we look at the stairs, the bathroom and how he gets in and out, and we may suggest asking the council's occupational therapist about rails or bathing equipment. Some upper flats suit visiting care better than live-in care because there is no spare room.

Can a carer walk with my mother on Peckham Rye?

Yes. A slow walk on the common or in the park, or a trip up Rye Lane for shopping, can be written into a companionship visit.

Are we nearer Lewisham Hospital or King's?

Most of Peckham looks to King's College Hospital on Denmark Hill. Towards Nunhead and the Lewisham border, University Hospital Lewisham is also close. We support discharges from either. Call us as soon as a discharge date is being discussed.

We live on an estate north of Peckham High Street. Who do we contact at the council?

The same OPPD team as everyone else in Peckham, on 020 7525 3324 or through the online form. For estate repairs, lifts or adaptations to a council flat, your housing office is a separate contact.
