Home Care in Deptford
Visiting carers and live-in care across SE8, from the Pepys and Evelyn estates by the river to Deptford High Street, St Paul's and the streets around Deptford Bridge.
Yes, we provide home care in Deptford: visits for washing, dressing, meals and medication, companionship, and live-in care where the flat has room for a carer. Our office is on Lewisham High Street, two stops from Deptford Bridge on the DLR, so Deptford counts as close by for us. Visiting care still depends on a carer being free at the times you need, so call and ask. Every package starts with a free home assessment and a written care plan.
From the riverside estates to the High Street
Deptford's housing comes in layers. By the Thames, the Pepys Estate stands on the site of the old Royal Victualling Yard and was built from 1966 onwards. With the Evelyn estate inland, it is home to many of the area's older council tenants, some in tower blocks and some in low-rise maisonettes reached by external walkways. Around St Paul's church and Albury Street, where a row of houses survives from the early 1700s, the homes are older and narrower. Newer blocks along Creek Road and the riverfront have lifts, level thresholds and wet rooms, while the Convoys Wharf site, the old royal dockyard, is still being redeveloped.
Each type brings its own problems. In a tower block, the visit only goes ahead if the lift is working, so we note who to call about the lift in the care plan and agree what the carer should do when it is out of service. In maisonettes the bedroom and bathroom are usually upstairs, which can rule out a downstairs bed unless the layout allows one. The early houses near St Paul's have tight, winding stairs, which a stairlift may not fit. We check all of this at the assessment.
Market days are worth keeping. Deptford Market fills the High Street, Douglas Way and Giffin Street on Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays. For someone who has shopped there for decades, a slow walk down with a carer, perhaps with a rollator, keeps them part of the street. A companionship visit can be planned around the market.
Can a carer get to my mum's flat in Deptford easily?
Usually, yes. Deptford Bridge DLR station is on the Lewisham branch, and Deptford station, which opened in 1836 on the London and Greenwich Railway, has Southeastern trains on the Greenwich line. New Cross is a short walk from the southern end of the High Street.
Driving takes more planning. Lewisham's published zone times show the Deptford, Deptford South and Evelyn zones running 9am to 5pm on weekdays, and Deptford Central running 9am to 6pm on weekdays plus Saturday mornings. If your relative lives in one of these zones and needs daily care, they can apply for a free carers' parking permit. They will need a letter from their GP. The permit lets a carer park for up to four hours a day in any vehicle.
GPs and the hospital
The Waldron Health Centre on Amersham Vale, between Deptford and New Cross, houses GP surgeries alongside NHS community clinics such as blood tests and foot health, and on Fridays it hosts one of the council's drop-in hubs for unpaid carers. If a carer is helping with medication, it helps to know which practice and pharmacy your relative uses before we start. Hospital stays usually mean University Hospital Lewisham, and the council offers free enablement for up to six weeks after discharge for people who qualify. If you call us while the ward is still planning the discharge, we can take over at home when enablement ends, or from the first day if you are arranging care privately. Our hospital discharge page explains how this works.
The council route
Most of Deptford is in Lewisham, but the area around St Nicholas church, near the Creek, is in the Royal Borough of Greenwich, and a few streets to the north-west border Southwark. Check the council tax bill. For Lewisham residents, the council suggests starting with its online wellbeing self-assessment, or you can phone Adult Social Care on 020 8314 7777. Details are on the council's assessment page. Our Lewisham home care page covers direct payments and carers' support across the borough.
Living in, or a short break
Live-in care needs a spare bedroom, so it is usually possible in two-bedroom flats and the older houses and rarely possible in one-bedroom tower flats. If a husband, wife or adult child is the main carer, respite care can cover an afternoon each week or a fortnight while they go away.

Deptford questions
Questions families ask us about Deptford. If yours is not here, ask us directly.
Ask a questionDad lives on the Pepys Estate and the lift breaks down. What happens to his visits?
We write a plan for lift outages into his care plan: who reports the fault, whether the carer can use the stairs, and what to do if a visit cannot go ahead. If the lift keeps failing, we can help you raise it with his landlord and with the council.
Is an address near the Creek in Lewisham or Greenwich?
It depends on the exact street, because the boundary runs close to St Nicholas church. The council tax bill will say. We can provide private care on either side, but a council assessment has to come from the right council.
Can a carer take Mum to Deptford Market?
Yes. Outings to the market, the library or church on Sunday can be part of her care plan. We plan the route, the pace and any equipment at the assessment.
He lives in one of the new riverside flats. Does that make a difference?
It usually makes care easier. Lifts, wider doors and level-access showers make it easier to use a hoist or a shower chair. Parking may still be limited, so carers often arrive by DLR or train.
