Live-in Care in North Kensington

Live-in care for tenants and owners in W10, from the estates around Golborne Road and Lancaster West to the terraces of Kensal Town, where a second bedroom makes it possible.

We can provide live-in care in North Kensington wherever the home has a bedroom the carer can have to themselves. The carer lives with the person, supports them with personal care, meals and medication through the day, and has a break every day; Jackie, our registered manager, does a free assessment first. North Kensington is a long way from our Lewisham office, so for anyone needing help every day, live-in care is the most dependable way we can cover W10.

Does a council flat in W10 have room for a live-in carer?

Sometimes. Many of North Kensington's older residents rent from the council or a housing association, on estates such as Silchester, Wornington Green and Lancaster West, in Trellick Tower or in low-rise blocks around Dalgarno and Kensal. The flats vary a great deal:

  • A two- or three-bedroom family flat or maisonette, where the children have grown up and moved out, can usually take a live-in carer.
  • A one-bedroom flat or studio can't. The carer would have nowhere to sleep.
  • Victorian terraced houses towards Kensal Town and St Charles Square are mostly split into flats, so check how many bedrooms the flat really has, not the house.

If you rent, let your landlord know a carer will be staying, so they know who is in the flat, particularly in a tower block.

No spare room: what then?

In a one-bedroom flat, the options are visits, a short stay elsewhere, or a move. Ask Kensington and Chelsea Adult Social Care for a needs assessment (details are on our borough live-in page). If you need daily support, the council may also look at whether different housing would suit better. Our visiting care in North Kensington depends on carer availability this far from south-east London, so ask us directly what we can offer. Age UK Kensington & Chelsea, at Thorpe Close under the Westway, gives free advice on all of these options.

Upper floors, lifts and equipment

For someone living high up in an estate block, a live-in carer changes what a lift breakdown means. There is someone in the flat if the lift is out, so meals, medication and personal care carry on, but the person may be stuck indoors and appointments may need moving. Two practical steps help:

  • Ask the landlord to record that a resident with limited mobility lives in the flat, so it is known if the lift fails or the building has to be evacuated.
  • Check that a profiling bed or a hoist will fit in the lift before it is delivered, and that there is room around the bed for the carer to work.

The people of Lancaster West have lived with the aftermath of the Grenfell Tower fire since 2017. If fire safety or the memory of that night is a worry for the person, tell us at the assessment. People First lists the Grenfell support still available.

Food, faith and language at home

North Kensington has long-established Moroccan, Portuguese and Caribbean communities, and a live-in carer shares the person's kitchen and daily routine. That makes the small details matter: halal or other dietary rules, the dishes the person still likes to cook, prayer times, the shops on Golborne Road they want to keep visiting, and which language they're most comfortable in, particularly if dementia is bringing back their first language. Write all of it into the care plan at the assessment. We'll be honest about which carers we can offer.

Where the carer spends their break. Kensal Library is at 20 Golborne Road. Green spaces close by include Kensington Memorial Park, Emslie Horniman's Pleasance in Kensal Town and Little Wormwood Scrubs near Dalgarno. If the person shouldn't be left alone for that time, Open Age activities for over-50s, based at the St Charles Centre, or a family member can fill the gap.

Arrival points and parking

A carer arriving for a changeover will usually come in at Ladbroke Grove or Latimer Road (Hammersmith & City and Circle lines), or Westbourne Park for the Golborne Road side; Kensal Green, just over the Brent border, is handy for the Kensal end. Relatives who drive should know Kensington and Chelsea doesn't issue visitor parking permits. Estate car parks have their own rules, so ask the estate office before parking there.

After St Mary's

St Mary's in Paddington is the nearest A&E to W10. If someone is coming home to a flat they can no longer get around safely, a live-in carer can cover the first weeks while the council's short-term reablement or equipment is arranged. Ring us when the ward first mentions a discharge date. See hospital discharge care and our London live-in care page.

North Kensington live-in care: questions

Questions families ask us about North Kensington. If yours is not here, ask us directly.

Ask a question
Will having a live-in carer affect Mum's council tenancy?

The carer is there to work, not as a tenant. Tell the landlord who is living in the flat, and check the tenancy agreement or ask the housing officer if you're unsure.

Dad keeps a halal kitchen. Will the carer respect that?

Yes. Dietary and religious practices go into the care plan, and the carer follows them when cooking and shopping. Tell us everything that matters at the assessment.

Mum's flat is two bedrooms, but my brother uses the second one when he visits. Can we still do live-in care?

Only if the room becomes the carer's for the placement. They need it every night, not just on the nights it's free.

Who do we talk to if a one-bed flat no longer works for Mum's care?

Start with Adult Social Care's needs assessment and, if she rents, her landlord. Age UK Kensington & Chelsea can help you through the options.
