Live-in Care in Shepherd's Bush

A carer who lives in and keeps your relative's W12 life going: the market under the railway, the Green, the church or mosque they go to, and the food they like to eat.

Yes, we provide live-in care in Shepherd's Bush. A carer moves in with a bedroom of their own and supports the person through the day, with a second carer booked for their time off. It is arranged after a free assessment at home by Jackie, our registered manager, and runs to a written care plan you agree first.

How do we set up live-in care in Shepherd's Bush?

  1. A phone call. Tell us who needs care, where they live and what has changed. Ring 0203 375 4047 or WhatsApp 07446 010486.
  2. The assessment visit. Jackie comes to the home and looks at the person's needs, the spare room, the bathroom and how they get in and out of the building.
  3. Matching. We look for a carer who fits the household: someone who will cook the dishes the person eats, respect their faith and routines, and get on with them. Shepherd's Bush has long-standing Caribbean, Irish, Polish, Somali and Arab communities, and we take culture seriously when matching, but we never promise a carer who speaks a particular language unless we have one available.
  4. The care plan and start date. You agree the plan in writing, and we confirm a start date once the carer is matched.

The spare room question in W12

The carer's bedroom is the one thing we can't work around. Around the Green and the Uxbridge Road, most terraces are split into flats; a two-bedroom conversion can work, and a studio or one-bedroom flat can't. In the Edward Woods Estate towers by the Westway, a second bedroom is all that's needed, and a live-in carer changes the lift problem: when it fails, someone is already in the flat, so meals and medication carry on. Towards Wormholt, some of the lower-rise council homes with gardens have the room. If there isn't one, our home care in Shepherd's Bush page explains visiting care.

Changeovers and match days

Shepherd's Bush is one of the easier parts of the borough for our carers to reach from south-east London. The Overground runs from Clapham Junction straight to Shepherd's Bush, and TfL lists that station's Overground platforms as step-free, which suits a carer arriving with a suitcase. The Central line station beside it and the Hammersmith & City line at Shepherd's Bush Market and Goldhawk Road are the other routes in.

A carer who drives needs a visitor booking through RingGo, because almost every street is in a controlled zone. On QPR home match days the streets around Loftus Road and South Africa Road get heavy traffic, so we avoid changeovers then.

Days that still belong to the person. Nubian Life at 50 Ellerslie Road runs day sessions for older African Caribbean and Asian residents. A place there gives the person company and gives the live-in carer protected time off on those days. Phone 020 8749 8017 to ask about current sessions. Families from the Polish community may already know St Andrew Bobola church on Leysfield Road, and a carer can keep up the Sunday trip there.

The carer's daily break

Every live-in carer needs a break each day away from the work. Shepherd's Bush Green is the nearest open space for much of the area. Shepherds Bush Library at 6 Wood Lane, inside Westfield London, opens every day and has quiet reading space and wifi. Hammersmith Park on South Africa Road, with its Japanese garden, pond and waterfall, is a short walk north. If the person can't be alone during the break, a relative, a sit-in visit or a day-centre session covers it.

After a stay at Charing Cross or Hammersmith Hospital

Charing Cross Hospital on Fulham Palace Road is the nearest A&E for most of W12, while Hammersmith Hospital on Du Cane Road treats kidney, heart and cancer patients. Coming home to a converted upstairs flat after a fall or an operation is when a live-in carer helps most: there is someone in the flat on the first nights, on the stairs, and at the bathroom door. Tell the ward early, and call us so we can assess before the discharge date. See hospital discharge support.

Can the council pay for live-in care in Shepherd's Bush?

Possibly, and it is worth asking before you pay privately. Hammersmith & Fulham doesn't charge for the home care it arranges after a Care Act assessment; call Adult Social Care on 0800 145 6095 and ask about live-in care and direct payments. NHS Continuing Healthcare covers people whose needs are mainly medical. If you arrange care with us privately, we give a written quote after the assessment. The council route is set out in more detail on our Hammersmith and Fulham live-in care page, and live-in care in London describes how the service works.

Shepherd's Bush live-in care: questions

Questions families ask us about Shepherd's Bush. If yours is not here, ask us directly.

Ask a question
Mum only eats Caribbean food. Will the carer cook it?

Her food goes into the care plan, dish by dish if she likes, and we look for a carer who can cook it. The market under the railway makes the shopping easy. If we can't find a good match straight away, we'll tell you.

Dad goes to the mosque on Fridays. Can the carer take him?

Yes. Prayer times, fasting in Ramadan and any care that should be given by a man or a woman are all recorded in the care plan, and we match the carer with those in mind.

My aunt is in a one-bedroom flat in the Edward Woods towers. Is live-in care out of the question?

In that flat, yes, because the carer must have their own bedroom. Visiting care is the realistic option, or a transfer to a two-bedroom home if the landlord can offer one.

Can the carer use Westfield for their break?

Yes. The library inside Westfield and the shops and cafés there are close by and open long hours. The break is the carer's own time.
