Live-in Care in Rainham and Beam Park

A carer who lives in, for people in Rainham village, South Hornchurch, Wennington and the new Beam Park flats, where a half-hourly train and a long trip to Queen's Hospital make a carer in the house especially useful.

Yes, we provide live-in care across Rainham and RM13. A carer moves into your relative's home, has their own bedroom, and gives support through the day, then hands over to a colleague when their stint ends. Rainham is slow to reach from Lewisham for daily visits, but that does not matter once a carer lives in. We start with a free home assessment and a written care plan and quote.

Can a live-in carer work in a new-build flat at Beam Park?

Usually, if the flat has two bedrooms and the second one is free. New blocks at Beam Park and along the riverside tend to suit live-in care in other ways: lifts, level thresholds, wide doors and walk-in showers make a wheelchair, a mobile hoist or a frame easier to use than in an older house. Before the carer arrives, check:

  • that the second bedroom has a bed and storage, and is not being used as a study or store room;
  • whether the building has a concierge or entry system the carer needs to be registered with;
  • whether the lease or building rules say anything about a carer staying;
  • where a carer who drives can park on changeover day, because visitor parking in new developments can be limited.

The western part of Beam Park is in Barking and Dagenham, not Havering; our Rainham home care page explains how to tell which council applies.

Village terraces, estates and South Hornchurch semis

For a live-in carer, the older parts of RM13 raise a different question from Beam Park: not whether there is a room, but whether the house works for two adults living in it for weeks at a time. A small village terrace may have a second bedroom yet only one small bathroom at the top of a narrow stair, which the carer and your relative will share at the same busy times of day. A South Hornchurch semi usually has the space. On the post-war estates, a flat with a second bedroom can work if your relative can still get to the street. Where there is only one bedroom, a carer cannot live in, and the options are visiting care in Rainham, if we have a carer who can reach it, or live-in care in a relative's home.

Planning changeovers around a half-hourly train

Rainham station is on the c2c line from Fenchurch Street, with two trains an hour each way off-peak. A carer coming from elsewhere in London will usually change at West Ham or Barking. A missed connection can mean a half-hour wait, so we plan changeovers with some slack. The outgoing carer always stays until the new carer arrives and has been through the care plan, the medicine records and what has happened in the last few weeks. The planned Beam Park station has not opened, so carers heading to Beam Park still come via Rainham or Dagenham Dock and then a bus or a walk.

Why a carer in the house helps after a hospital stay

Queen's Hospital in Romford, where most Rainham residents are admitted, is several miles north, and there is no train between the two. That makes the first days home harder to manage with visits, and follow-up appointments harder for an older person to reach on their own. A live-in carer is there from the first evening. They can settle your relative in, watch for problems, collect prescriptions and go with them to clinic. Tell the ward as early as you can that live-in care is the plan, and ask what equipment is coming home. Our hospital discharge support page explains the steps.

The carer's break, by the river. A footbridge just south of Rainham station leads on to the marshes. The RSPB's Rainham Marshes visitor centre is further east at Purfleet, with boardwalks and gravel paths. In the village, Rainham Library on Celtic Farm Road is a good place to sit indoors. On Friday mornings it also hosts Imago's drop-in for family carers.

Live-in care for a couple in Wennington or the village

Wennington and the edges of Rainham are semi-rural, and a husband or wife who has been the main carer there can easily become cut off. One live-in carer can take on the personal care for one partner and give the other company, help with the shopping and time to themselves. If both partners need two-person help with moving, one carer is not enough, and we will say so at the assessment.

Paying for live-in care in Rainham

We give a written quote after the free assessment. Havering Adult Social Care (or Barking and Dagenham, for the western part of Beam Park) assesses needs and finances. Council funding can be paid as a direct payment towards live-in care, and NHS Continuing Healthcare is assessed separately. Our Havering live-in care page covers the funding routes, and live-in care in London explains what a live-in carer does.

Rainham live-in care questions

Questions families ask us about Rainham. If yours is not here, ask us directly.

Ask a question
Mum's Beam Park flat has a concierge. Does the carer need to be registered?

Check with the building management. Many new blocks ask residents to register regular visitors or provide a fob. It is worth sorting before the first carer arrives, and again at each changeover.

What happens if the incoming carer's train is late?

The outgoing carer stays until the new one arrives. Your relative is not left alone during a changeover.

Dad lives in Wennington, with no shop nearby. How will the carer manage the shopping?

Through online deliveries, bus trips into Rainham, or family help, whichever suits. We agree it in the care plan, along with how the carer gets out on their own break.

Can the live-in carer go with Mum to Queen's Hospital for check-ups?

Yes, if it is in her care plan. It is a long journey from Rainham, so having the carer with her makes it far easier.
