Care Jobs for Bexley Residents

If you live in Bexley, you can apply to us for visiting carer work, live-in care anywhere in London, or support worker shifts at our supported living homes. Our office is in Lewisham and our visiting work is in south-east London, close to Bexley, so visiting care is a realistic option from Welling, Bexleyheath or Sidcup. Our supported living homes are on the far side of London, a long commute.

Can I do visiting care work if I live in Bexley?

Yes. Unlike most outer boroughs, Bexley is close enough to our visiting work for this to be a realistic everyday job. Visiting carers go from one client's home to the next during the day, and our visiting work is in south-east London. Whether there is work close to your own street depends on which clients we are supporting at the time, so tell us where you can reach and we'll be straight with you.

  • Welling, Falconwood, Bexleyheath and Barnehurst are on the Bexleyheath line, whose trains run through Lewisham.
  • Sidcup, Albany Park, Bexley village and Crayford are on the Sidcup line, which passes through Hither Green, next door to Lewisham.
  • Erith, Belvedere and Slade Green are on the North Kent line, and journeys towards Lewisham are longer, roughly 35 to 45 minutes.

By car, Sidcup, Welling and Bexleyheath are about 20 to 30 minutes from Lewisham via the A20 or A2. Bexley is inside the ULEZ like the rest of London, so check an older car on TfL's ULEZ page.

Parking on Bexley visits. Most residential streets in the borough have free parking, but controlled zones cover the areas around stations and town centres such as Bexleyheath Broadway, Sidcup and Welling. Bexley Council issues social care permits for care workers who drive between clients. The employer applies with a signed letter for a named vehicle, and the permit covers resident and pay bays, not yellow lines or disabled bays.

Live-in carer roles

A live-in carer moves into the client's home for a period, with a bedroom of their own, and helps with personal care, meals, medication, housework and company. Placements can be anywhere in London. Where you live matters less, because you stay where the work is. You are entitled to proper breaks and time off, and we arrange cover for them. In Bexley itself, many homes are 1930s semis with steep stairs and an upstairs bathroom, so stairlifts and commodes are part of the job, and you should be comfortable with them. The live-in care page shows the role from the family's side.

Supported living shifts: a long way from Bexley

Our three supported living homes are in Kingston upon Thames, Whitton (Twickenham) and Uxbridge, where support workers help adults cook, manage money, get out and build confidence. From Bexley they are a commute to think hard about:

  • Kingston is the nearest: around an hour by car on the A205 South Circular, or about 1 hour 30 to 1 hour 45 minutes by train via London Bridge or Waterloo East and then Waterloo.
  • Whitton is a little further on the same route, and Uxbridge about two hours.

Regular shifts on that journey are hard to sustain.

What the work involves

  • Washing, dressing and help with the toilet, done with dignity
  • Prompting medication and keeping accurate records
  • Safe moving and handling, including hoists and stairlifts
  • Meals, shopping and light housework
  • Company, conversation and trips out
  • Noticing changes in someone's health and reporting them

The people we support may be living with dementia, a physical disability or a sensory impairment, and some are nearing the end of life.

Checks we must make before you start

As a CQC-registered provider, we are legally required to complete:

  1. An enhanced DBS check with the adults' barred list, through the Disclosure and Barring Service.
  2. A right to work check under the government's right to work rules, including any limit on your hours.
  3. References, including your most recent employer and any previous care employer.

New to care? You will work through the Care Certificate standards from Skills for Care, covering safeguarding, dignity, communication and infection control, and shadow experienced colleagues before working on your own.

What do care jobs in Bexley pay?

We don't publish pay on this page because it depends on the role. Ask us when you get in touch and we'll tell you plainly.

Bexley FAQs

Questions from Bexley applicants

Questions families ask us about Bexley. If yours is not here, ask us directly.

Ask a question
Do you have an office in Bexleyheath?

No. Our only office is at Tower House, 67-71 Lewisham High Street, SE13. From Bexleyheath or Welling it is a direct Bexleyheath-line train to Lewisham, so coming in for a meeting is straightforward.

I live in Erith and don't drive. Is visiting work realistic?

It can be, but it depends where clients are. The North Kent line is slower towards Lewisham than the Bexleyheath or Sidcup lines, and getting between homes on foot and by bus takes time.

Would you apply for a Bexley social care parking permit for me?

The council only accepts applications from the care organisation, with a letter signed by your line manager. If you drive between visits in Bexley, raise it with us once you start and we'll look at whether it applies to your round.

I've looked after my dad in Sidcup for years. Can I go straight into the job?

That experience is worth telling us about. You would still need the DBS, right to work and reference checks before you start, and you would work through the Care Certificate standards and shadow a colleague before working alone.
