Care Jobs for Bromley Residents
If you live in Bromley, you can apply to us for live-in carer work anywhere in London, visiting care work, or support worker shifts at our supported living homes. How practical visiting work is depends on where you live. From Penge, Beckenham, Bromley town or the stations on the Orpington line, our Lewisham base is a short train or bus ride away. From Biggin Hill and the rural south, live-in work is the realistic choice.
Is visiting care work realistic from my part of Bromley?
Bromley is London's largest borough, and the answer changes from one end to the other. Visiting carers go from one client's home to the next through the day, and our visiting work is in south-east London. Whether there is work near you depends on which clients we support at the time, so tell us where you live and how you travel.
- Beckenham, Elmers End, West Wickham and Hayes are on the Hayes line, whose trains run straight through Lewisham.
- Bromley town has the 208 bus to Lewisham, and Bromley North has a shuttle train to Grove Park for connections towards Lewisham.
- Chislehurst, Petts Wood and Orpington are on the Orpington line, which runs via Grove Park and Hither Green, next to Lewisham. Allow roughly 25 to 40 minutes.
- Penge and Anerley have good bus links and stations at Penge East, Penge West and Anerley.
- Biggin Hill, Downe and the villages in the south have no station, and the trip to Lewisham by public transport takes over an hour. Daily visiting work is hard to make work from there.
Driving to visits in Bromley. Most residential streets away from stations have no parking restrictions. Controlled zones cover the areas around Bromley, Beckenham, Orpington, Petts Wood and West Wickham town centres and stations. Bromley Council says it offers no carers' permits, so a carer parking in a permit bay during controlled hours needs a visitor voucher from the resident. Bromley is inside the London-wide ULEZ, so check an older car on TfL's ULEZ page.
Live-in care: the role that suits all of Bromley
A live-in carer moves into the client's home for a period, with a bedroom of their own. They help with personal care, meals, medication, housework and company. Placements can be anywhere in London, so it does not matter that you live in Orpington or Biggin Hill. You stay where the work is. You get proper breaks and time off, and we arrange cover.
Bromley homes are mostly semis and detached houses with bedrooms upstairs, so be comfortable with stairlifts, commodes and downstairs beds. In the south there are many bungalows, some on hilly or unmade roads. Our live-in care page shows the family's side.
Supported living shifts, across London
Our three supported living homes are in Kingston upon Thames, Whitton (Twickenham) and Uxbridge. Support workers there help adults cook, manage money and build confidence. From Bromley, think carefully about the commute:
- Kingston is the nearest: about 45 minutes to an hour by car on the A232 and A240, or around 1 hour 10 to 1 hour 30 minutes by tram from Beckenham Junction or Elmers End to Wimbledon, then the train on to Kingston.
- Whitton and Uxbridge are further again.
From Orpington or Chislehurst, regular shifts on that journey are hard to keep up.
What the job involves day to day
- Washing, dressing and help with the toilet, done with dignity
- Prompting and recording medication
- Safe moving and handling, including hoists and stairlifts
- Meals, shopping and light housework
- Company, conversation and trips out
- Spotting changes in someone's health and reporting them
The people we support may be living with dementia, a physical disability or a sensory impairment, and some are nearing the end of life. Some will have just come home from the Princess Royal University Hospital in Farnborough or from rehab at Orpington Hospital.
The checks the law requires before you start
As a CQC-registered provider, we must complete these checks before you work with anyone:
- An enhanced DBS check, including the adults' barred list, through the Disclosure and Barring Service.
- A right to work check under the government's rules, including any limit on the hours you can work.
- References, including your most recent employer and any previous care employer.
If you are new to care, you will work through the Care Certificate standards from Skills for Care before working on your own. They cover safeguarding, dignity, communication, and infection prevention and control.
What do care jobs in Bromley pay?
We don't publish pay here because it depends on the role, whether visiting, live-in or supported living. Ask us and we will give you a straight answer.

Questions from Bromley applicants
Questions families ask us about Bromley. If yours is not here, ask us directly.
Ask a questionDo you have an office in Bromley or Orpington?
No. Our only office is at Tower House, 67-71 Lewisham High Street, SE13. The 208 bus runs there from Bromley town centre. From Beckenham or West Wickham, Hayes line trains stop at Lewisham station, a short walk away, and from Chislehurst or Orpington trains run through Hither Green, one stop from Lewisham.
I live in Biggin Hill. Is there any point applying?
Yes, for live-in work, which doesn't depend on a daily commute. Visiting work is unlikely to suit you without a car, because there is no station and journeys towards Lewisham take more than an hour.
Will I need a parking permit to visit clients in Bromley?
Bromley doesn't issue permits for carers. On most residential streets you won't need one. Where a client lives inside a controlled zone, a visitor voucher from the resident covers a permit bay during controlled hours.
I've been a support worker for adults with learning disabilities in Bromley. Would the supported living homes suit me?
Tell us about that experience. The catch is the commute, since all three homes are in west London. Living near Beckenham Junction or Elmers End, with the tram to Wimbledon, makes Kingston more manageable.
