Care Jobs for Greenwich Residents

If you live in Greenwich, you can apply to us for visiting carer work, live-in placements anywhere in London, or support worker shifts at our supported living homes. Greenwich starts about a mile from our Lewisham office, so visiting care is a practical everyday job from most of the borough. Our supported living homes, though, are right across London.

Visiting care work from Greenwich

Greenwich is well placed for our visiting work, which is in south-east London. Whether there are clients near your street depends on who we support at the time, so tell us where you can get to and we'll give you a straight answer.

  • Greenwich town and Cutty Sark are on the DLR, under 10 minutes from Lewisham.
  • Kidbrooke and Eltham are on the Bexleyheath line, roughly 10 to 15 minutes from Lewisham by train. New Eltham and Mottingham are on the Sidcup line.
  • Charlton, Woolwich and Plumstead are on the North Kent line, about 15 to 25 minutes away. Woolwich Arsenal also has the DLR.
  • Thamesmead and the far side of Abbey Wood are nearer 40 to 50 minutes by public transport. Workable, but a long day if your visits are in the west.

By car, most of the borough is 15 to 30 minutes from Lewisham on the A2, A20 or A205.

Parking between visits. If you drive, expect to hunt for a space in the riverside and station areas, which are mostly inside controlled zones, and to avoid the roads by The Valley when Charlton Athletic are at home. The south-east of the borough, around New Eltham and Shooters Hill, is generally easier. Royal Greenwich's carer parking permit is applied for by the person who needs care, not by the carer, so it depends on each client's household.

What the job is like in Greenwich homes

The local housing shapes how you do the job.

  • Plumstead, Charlton and Woolwich have Victorian terraces on steep roads, with steps up to the front door and narrow stairs inside. Helping someone with a walking frame takes patience.
  • Older estates in Woolwich, Abbey Wood and Thamesmead depend on lifts. When one is out of service, getting someone to an appointment takes planning.
  • Newer blocks at Royal Arsenal Riverside, Greenwich Peninsula and Kidbrooke Village are the easiest places to work with a hoist: there is room to manoeuvre, and you are not carrying shopping up stairs.
  • Eltham and New Eltham are mostly interwar houses with an upstairs bathroom, so you will often use stairlifts and commodes.

Day to day, you help with washing, dressing and the toilet, prompt medication and keep records, and handle moving and handling safely. You also cook, shop, do light housework, keep people company and report any changes in their health. The people we support may have dementia, a physical disability or a sensory impairment, and some are at the end of their lives.

Live-in roles anywhere in London

A live-in carer moves into the client's home for a set period, has their own bedroom, and helps with personal care, meals, medication, housework and company. Placements can be in any London borough, so where you live matters less. You are entitled to proper breaks and time off, and we arrange cover. Our live-in care page shows the role from the family's side.

Supported living shifts: a long commute from Greenwich

Our supported living homes are in Kingston upon Thames, Whitton (Twickenham) and Uxbridge. Support workers there help adults cook, manage money, go out and build confidence. From Greenwich:

  • Kingston is around an hour by car on the A205, or about 1 hour 20 minutes to 1 hour 45 minutes by train. From North Greenwich the Jubilee line goes straight to Waterloo, where Kingston trains start.
  • Whitton is a little further on, and Uxbridge takes up to about two hours.

That is hard to keep up as a regular pattern.

The checks we must complete before you start

As a CQC-registered provider, the law requires us to complete:

  1. An enhanced DBS check including the adults' barred list, through the Disclosure and Barring Service.
  2. A right to work check following the government's right to work rules. This also records any limit on the hours you are allowed to work.
  3. References, including your most recent employer and any previous care employer.

If you are new to care, you will work through the Care Certificate standards set by Skills for Care before you work alone. They cover safeguarding, dignity, communication and infection control.

How much do care jobs in Greenwich pay?

We don't publish pay here because it depends on the role. Ask us when you get in touch and we'll tell you plainly.

Greenwich FAQs

Questions from Greenwich applicants

Questions families ask us about Greenwich. If yours is not here, ask us directly.

Ask a question
Do you have an office in Woolwich?

No. Our only office is at Tower House, 67-71 Lewisham High Street, SE13. From Greenwich town it is a short DLR ride to Lewisham, and from Eltham or Kidbrooke a direct train.

I live in Thamesmead and don't drive. Is visiting work realistic?

Possibly, if there are clients in the east of the borough. Getting to Lewisham or west Greenwich means a bus to Abbey Wood or Plumstead first, so tell us honestly how far you can travel between visits.

I study at the University of Greenwich. Can I work part-time?

You can apply. If you are on a student visa, it limits the hours you can work during term time, and our right to work check will record that. Tell us the hours you can actually do.

Will I be given a parking permit for visits in Charlton or Greenwich town?

Not automatically. Royal Greenwich's carer permit is applied for by the person receiving care, so some clients have one and others don't. If you drive, tell us and we'll plan visits with parking in mind.
