Care Jobs for People Living in Havering

If you live in Romford, Hornchurch, Upminster or anywhere else in Havering, live-in care is the role that fits best with us, because you travel to a placement and stay there. Our visiting work is around our Lewisham office, which is about an hour from Romford and longer from the rest of the borough. Our supported living homes are in west London.

Live-in carer: the role that works from Havering

A live-in carer moves into a client's home for an agreed stretch of time and has a bedroom of their own. The work covers washing and dressing, meals, medication, housework and company. You get proper breaks and time off, with cover arranged. You travel at the start and end of a placement, not twice a day, so living at the eastern end of the District line is no barrier.

Placements can be anywhere in London. The homes are often like the ones you know locally: a 1930s semi with a steep, straight staircase and the only bathroom upstairs, much like the houses in Elm Park, Collier Row or Harold Hill. Stairlifts, commodes and a bed brought downstairs are a normal part of the job. The live-in care page shows the family's side.

Can I do visiting care work from Havering?

Possibly, but be realistic about the journey. Visiting carers go from one client to the next during the day, and our visiting work is in south-east London around Lewisham. These are typical routes from Havering:

  • From Romford, Gidea Park or Harold Wood: the Elizabeth line to Stratford, then the DLR to Lewisham. Roughly 50 to 60 minutes from Romford, and a bit longer from further up the line.
  • From Upminster, Rainham or Elm Park: c2c to Limehouse for the DLR, or the District line to West Ham and the Jubilee line to Canary Wharf for the DLR. Usually more than an hour.
  • From Harold Hill or Collier Row, which have no station, add a bus into Romford or Harold Wood first.

By car it is roughly 40 to 60 minutes along the A13. You then cross the river by the Blackwall or Silvertown tunnel, both of which charge a toll, or by the free Woolwich Ferry. All of Havering is inside the ULEZ, so check an older car on TfL's ULEZ page. Visiting care inside Havering itself is something we can take on only case by case, when a carer is available. We don't have a regular round there, so we can't promise one near your home.

Supported living work at our homes

Support workers at our three supported living homes help adults to cook, shop, manage money, get to appointments and build their confidence. The homes are in Uxbridge, Kingston upon Thames and Whitton. Uxbridge is the closest to Havering: about an hour and a half or more by the Elizabeth line into central London and the Metropolitan line out, or an hour-plus by car round the M25 when traffic is light. Kingston and Whitton are nearer two hours. That is a hard commute to keep up shift after shift.

A day's work, whichever role you choose

  • Personal care: washing, dressing and help with the toilet
  • Prompting or giving medication and recording it accurately
  • Moving and handling safely, including hoists and stairlifts
  • Cooking, shopping and keeping the home tidy
  • Conversation, company and getting out
  • Noticing changes in health and reporting them

The people we support include adults living with dementia, physical disabilities or sensory impairments, and people receiving care at the end of life.

The checks the law requires

Because we are registered with the CQC, everyone we employ goes through the same pre-employment checks, however much experience they have:

  1. Enhanced DBS check with a check of the adults' barred list, carried out through the Disclosure and Barring Service.
  2. Right to work in the UK, following the government's right to work rules, including any limit on your hours.
  3. References, including your most recent employer and any earlier care work.

If you are new to care, you will work through the Care Certificate from Skills for Care before working on your own.

How much do care jobs pay in Havering?

We don't publish pay rates on this page, because they depend on the role and the placement. Ask us when you get in touch and we will give you a straight answer.

Havering FAQs

Questions from Havering applicants

Questions families ask us about Havering. If yours is not here, ask us directly.

Ask a question
Is there a JNP Sidona office in Romford?

No. Our only office is at Tower House, 67-71 Lewisham High Street, SE13, about an hour from Romford by the Elizabeth line and DLR. Ask whether your first conversation can be by phone.

Could a live-in placement be in Havering, close to my family?

It could be, if a Havering family needs live-in care when you are ready to start. Placements can be anywhere in London, though, so tell us your preferences and we will be honest about what we have.

I live in Harold Hill and don't drive. Would visiting work be practical?

It would mean a bus to Harold Wood or Romford, the Elizabeth line, the DLR and then travel between clients, which makes a very long day. Live-in work is likely to suit you much better.

I look after my own mum in Hornchurch. Could I still take live-in work?

Only if someone else can cover her care while you are away on placement, so plan that first. Havering's carers support service, run by Imago (0300 011 1965), can talk through your own caring role and a carer's assessment.
