Care Jobs for People Living in Redbridge

If you live in Ilford, Wanstead, Woodford or anywhere else in Redbridge, you can apply to us for live-in carer work, which can be anywhere in London. Visiting care work is mostly around our Lewisham office, which is about 45 minutes to an hour from Ilford and Wanstead, so it suits some Redbridge applicants and not others. Our supported living homes are in west London.

Is visiting care work realistic from Redbridge?

It depends which end of the borough you live in. Most of our visiting work is in south-east London, and from the south and west of Redbridge the change at Stratford makes the trip workable:

  • Ilford, Seven Kings or Goodmayes: change from the Elizabeth line to the DLR at Stratford. From Ilford that is roughly 45 to 55 minutes.
  • Wanstead, Snaresbrook or South Woodford: the Central line to Stratford, then the DLR. About 45 minutes from Wanstead.
  • Woodford, Barkingside or Hainault: usually an hour to an hour and a quarter. From Clayhall or Woodford Bridge, which have no station, add a bus at the start.

By car it is roughly 30 to 50 minutes down the A12 and through the Blackwall Tunnel, which now charges a toll. All of London is inside the ULEZ, so check an older car on TfL's ULEZ page before you rely on it for work.

We take on visiting clients inside Redbridge only case by case, when a carer is free, so we can't promise you work near home. If you drive between visits there, controlled parking zones cover most station areas and Ilford town centre, and the council's essential user permit doesn't cover home carers.

Live-in care: the role that works from anywhere in the borough

On a live-in placement you stay in the client's home for an agreed stretch, in a bedroom of your own, and help with washing and dressing, meals, medication, housework and company. You get proper breaks and time off, with cover arranged, and you only travel at the start and end of a placement.

Placements can be anywhere in London, and plenty of the homes look like the ones you know. In an Edwardian terrace like those in Seven Kings and Goodmayes, the stairs are often steep and the only bathroom is upstairs, so stairlifts, commodes and a bed moved downstairs are part of the job. The 1930s semis in Clayhall and Gants Hill usually have more room. The live-in care page explains the role from the family's side.

Support worker shifts at our supported living homes

Our three supported living homes are in Uxbridge, Kingston upon Thames and Whitton. Support workers there help adults cook, shop, manage money and get to appointments. From Redbridge the commute is long. Uxbridge is about an hour and a half or more from Ilford by the Elizabeth line and the Metropolitan line, or roughly an hour to an hour and a quarter by car along the North Circular and the A40 when traffic is light. Kingston and Whitton take longer. That is a hard journey to keep up shift after shift.

What you would do day to day

  • Help with washing, dressing and using the toilet
  • Prompt or give medication, and record it properly
  • Move and handle people safely, including with hoists
  • Cook, shop and keep the home in order
  • Sit, talk, go for a walk and keep someone company
  • Spot changes in someone's health and report them

Expect to support adults living with dementia, physical disabilities or sensory impairments, and some people nearing the end of life.

How much do care jobs pay in Redbridge?

This page gives no rates. A live-in placement, a visiting round in south-east London and a support worker shift in Uxbridge are paid differently, so ask us about the specific role you want and we will tell you straight.

Before your first shift: checks and training

Years of care work in Ilford or anywhere else don't exempt you: as a CQC-registered provider we must complete these checks for every new starter:

  1. An enhanced DBS check that also covers the adults' barred list, done through the Disclosure and Barring Service.
  2. Proof that you can work in the UK, checked under the government's right to work rules, which also show any limit on your hours.
  3. References, including one from your latest employer and one from any previous job in care.

If you have never worked in care, you work towards the Care Certificate from Skills for Care before working on your own.

Ask a question
Do you have an office in Ilford where I could drop off my CV?

No. Our only office is at Tower House, 67-71 Lewisham High Street, SE13. From Ilford that is the Elizabeth line to Stratford and the DLR to Lewisham. Email your CV, and ask whether a first chat can be on the phone.

I live in Hainault and don't drive. Is visiting work in Lewisham worth it?

It is a long way. You would ride the Central line round to Stratford before the DLR, and then travel between clients on top of that. Live-in work, where you only travel at the start and end of a placement, is likely to suit you better.

If I drive to clients in Redbridge, can I get a parking permit?

Redbridge's essential user permit is for health service, fire service, police and council staff, and the council doesn't list a permit for home carers. In a controlled parking zone you would normally use the client's visitor permits or pay-and-display, so ask about parking before a first visit.

I already look after my dad in Goodmayes. Could I still do live-in work?

Only if someone else can cover his care while you are away, so plan that first. Redbridge Carers Support Service in Clements Lane, Ilford (020 8514 6251), can talk through your own caring role. You can also ask the council for a carer's assessment of your own needs.
