Live-in Care in Bexleyheath

A carer who moves into the spare room of a DA6 or DA7 home, from the flats behind the Broadway to the semis of West Heath and Barnehurst, so that help is in the house all day.

Yes, we arrange live-in care in Bexleyheath, in the town-centre flats around the Broadway as well as the semis of Upton, West Heath and North Heath. A trained carer lives in your home, in a bedroom of their own, and supports one person or a couple through the day; we organise their arrival, their daily break and cover for their holidays. Everything starts with a free assessment at the house and a written care plan agreed with you.

Two kinds of Bexleyheath home, two different answers

Live-in care depends on one thing: a bedroom the carer can have. In Bexleyheath that depends on the kind of home.

  • The interwar semis and short terraces that fill the roads out towards West Heath, Upton and Barnehurst. A three-bedroom house usually has a room free, even if it is full of boxes. The carer needs a single bed, drawers or a rail for clothes, and a door that shuts.
  • The Victorian cottages near the Broadway. Smaller rooms and sometimes only two bedrooms. If the second one is used, live-in care still works; if a couple each sleep in their own room, it may not.
  • Newer flats in and around the town centre. These are the hardest. A two-bedroom flat can take a live-in carer once the spare room is cleared. A one-bedroom flat cannot, and a sofa bed in the lounge is not a substitute. There, the realistic choices are visiting care in Bexleyheath, or a move for the period of care to a relative's house with a spare room.

Equipment on one staircase

The semis share a layout: one straight flight of stairs and the bathroom at the top. A live-in carer can steady someone on those stairs morning and night, but they cannot make a staircase safe for a person who can no longer lift their feet. That is the point to think about a straight stairlift, which these staircases generally take well, or a bed brought down to the front room with a commode beside it.

A mobile hoist is a ground-floor solution in most of these houses. It needs clear floor space around the bed and will not go up the stairs, so if one is needed, the bedroom usually moves downstairs too. In the town-centre flats, the same equipment has to fit through the front door and into the lift. Bexley Council's occupational therapists assess for equipment and adaptations; ask for this through the same council route as the care assessment.

Where does a live-in carer take their break in Bexleyheath?

Every live-in carer has a protected break each day, and it should be a real one, out of the house. Bexleyheath is well placed for it:

  • Danson Park, on the western edge of the town, with its lake and Danson House. A walk round the lake fits comfortably into a break.
  • The Broadway and the Broadway Shopping Centre, for a coffee, an errand or simply time on their own.
  • Central Library on Townley Road, the borough's main library, with free computers and Wi-Fi for library members. Membership of Bexley Libraries is free, and you do not have to live in the borough to join, so a carer from elsewhere can sign up.

We agree before care starts who is with the person during the break: a husband or wife, a relative, a neighbour, or a period when they are safe alone.

Not every Bexleyheath road is controlled. If a carer drives, check your zone. The Town Centre zone (A) runs Monday to Saturday, 8.30am to 5.30pm, with different hours on some roads; the Station zone (G) and Barnehurst zone (K) only from 10am to noon on weekdays, and West Heath (WH) from 10am to 4pm on weekdays. Residents inside a zone can buy visitor scratch cards, which the council processes before posting them out, so order them well before changeover day.

Changeover day

Most live-in carers arrive by train, with a suitcase. Bexleyheath station is on the Bexleyheath line, with direct trains from London Bridge, Charing Cross, Cannon Street and Victoria, several of them via Lewisham. Barnehurst, one stop east, is often closer for homes on the North Heath and Barnehurst side. We give the incoming carer the route from the platform to your door before they set off.

At a changeover the outgoing carer hands over in person where we can arrange it: medicines, the care plan, what kind of night it was, anything the family has asked to change. If a carer comes by car, the scratch cards above cover the controlled hours; outside them, most of the residential streets have no restrictions.

Coming home from Queen Elizabeth Hospital

Bexleyheath's main acute hospital is Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Woolwich, run by Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Trust. Once the ward says someone is medically fit, discharge can move quickly. A live-in carer can be in the house before the patient transport arrives, make up a downstairs bed if needed, and stay through the unsettled first nights. Call us as soon as discharge is mentioned, as matching a carer takes time; our hospital discharge page explains what to ask the ward.

How do we pay for live-in care in Bexleyheath?

Through Bexley Council if the person is assessed as eligible: a needs assessment, a financial assessment, and the council's share taken as a direct payment if you want to choose the agency. Our Bexley live-in care page sets out that route and the phone numbers. If the main needs are health needs, ask the GP or ward about NHS Continuing Healthcare. Otherwise it is paid privately. We give a written quote after the free assessment; we publish no standard price. For how live-in care works across the capital, see live-in care in London.

Live-in care in Bexleyheath: questions we are asked

Questions families ask us about Bexleyheath. If yours is not here, ask us directly.

Ask a question
Mum has a one-bedroom flat near the Broadway. Is there any way to make live-in care work there?

Not in that flat, because the carer needs a bedroom of their own. The options are visits, or Mum staying with a relative who has a spare room while she needs round-the-clock help. We can talk through both at the assessment.

Our semi has a stairlift already. Can a live-in carer use it with Dad?

Yes. The carer helps him on and off at the top and bottom, where getting the balance right matters most, and makes sure his walking frame is waiting on the right floor. We check the stairlift and the landing space at the assessment.

We live in the Town Centre parking zone. Does the carer need a permit to park?

Only during the zone's hours, Monday to Saturday in zone A. As a resident you can apply for visitor scratch cards; the council has to process the application and post them, so apply well before the carer's first day.

Could the carer take Dad to Danson Park most days?

If he is well enough and it is in his care plan, yes. Going out together is part of the carer's day, separate from their own break.
