Live-in Care in Deptford
Yes, we arrange live-in care in Deptford and the rest of SE8, in council flats, older houses and the new riverside blocks alike, provided the home has a second bedroom. A trained carer moves in once Jackie has assessed the home for free and the care plan is agreed in writing, and our Lewisham High Street office is only two DLR stops from Deptford Bridge.
Which Deptford homes can take a live-in carer?
The test is simple: a bedroom for the carer, and a kitchen and bathroom they can share. How that plays out in Deptford depends on the building.
- Two-bedroom council flats on the Pepys and Evelyn estates. Often a good fit. The flats are on one level, so once the person is through the front door everything is close together.
- Maisonettes. Workable, but the bedrooms are usually upstairs, so the carer's room and the person's room are on the same floor as the bathroom, and the kitchen is below. We plan the day around that stair.
- Georgian and Victorian houses near St Paul's. Plenty of rooms, but narrow and steep stairs that can defeat a stairlift.
- New flats along Creek Road and the river. Lifts, wide doors and level showers make hoists and wheelchairs easy. Many are one-bedroom, though, and a one-bedroom flat cannot take a live-in carer.
Council tenants: tell the landlord first
If your relative rents from the council or a housing association, let the landlord know a carer will be staying. A live-in carer is there to work, not as a tenant or lodger, but landlords like to know who is living in their flats, and it heads off awkward questions later. It is also the moment to ask about adaptations: a level-access shower, grab rails or a wider door are usually the landlord's decision, not ours.
In a tower block, the lift matters more with someone living in than with visits, because hospital beds, hoists and wheelchairs all depend on it. Find out now who to call when it breaks and how long repairs usually take, and we will build that into the care plan.
From University Hospital Lewisham back to SE8
Deptford patients are usually discharged from University Hospital Lewisham. A live-in carer suits a discharge when the person lives alone in a flat, cannot yet manage the walk to the shops, and needs help at times no visiting rota covers. Lewisham Council's leaving hospital page explains the free enablement service, which the hospital team assesses on the ward. Live-in care can follow enablement, or start straight away when it is arranged privately. Call us while discharge is being planned, not on the day.
Tuesdays at the Albany. Meet Me at the Albany, run with Entelechy Arts at the Albany on Douglas Way, is a weekly arts and social club for people over 65, on Tuesdays from 10.30am to 2.30pm, with a weekly choir, at a venue that has pledged to sign the Dementia Friendly Venue Charter. A live-in carer can take someone along, which gets them out of the flat and among neighbours.
Changeovers in all-day parking zones
On the council's list, the Deptford, Deptford South and Evelyn zones are enforced 9am to 5pm on weekdays, and Deptford Central 9am to 6pm on weekdays plus Saturday mornings, so a car arriving in the middle of the day needs a permit. So we plan changeovers by public transport. Deptford Bridge, like every DLR station, is step-free; Deptford station is on the Southeastern line to Greenwich; and the Overground is a short walk away at New Cross.
If a relative drives a carer and their luggage in, the household can buy a council visitor e-voucher for that car. The visitor permits page explains the options; note that a one-day voucher ends when the zone's hours end, not 24 hours later. If your relative already holds the council's free carers' permit, that covers up to four hours' parking a day, which is enough for a handover.
Breaks, markets and quiet corners
The carer's daily break is their own time. In Deptford it can go on:
- The Deptford Lounge. The library on Giffin Street stays open until 7pm on weekdays, with free computers and somewhere quiet to sit.
- Brookmill Park. A small council park by the River Ravensbourne near Deptford Bridge, with a lake and an ornamental garden.
- The High Street. On market days, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday, there is always somewhere to get lunch.
The same places work for outings with the person, along with church at St Paul's or wherever they have worshipped for years. If someone has always shopped on the High Street, a slow trip with the carer can be part of the week.
How much does live-in care cost in Deptford?
There is no single figure: the cost depends on how much help is needed and whether the carer supports one person or two, so we quote in writing after the free assessment. Lewisham Council can assess needs and finances and may contribute; our Lewisham live-in care page sets out that route, including direct payments. NHS Continuing Healthcare may cover the whole cost where needs are mainly health needs. Our live-in care guide covers how the arrangement works, and if visits would do, see home care in Deptford.

Live-in care questions from Deptford
Questions families ask us about Deptford. If yours is not here, ask us directly.
Ask a questionMum has a one-bedroom flat on Creek Road. Is there any way live-in care could work?
Not in that flat, because the carer needs their own bedroom. The options are visiting care, which depends on carer availability at your times, or asking the council or landlord about a transfer to a two-bedroom home if her needs are long term.
Does a live-in carer count as a lodger in a council flat?
A live-in carer is working, not renting, but you should still tell the landlord. Some tenancy agreements set rules about who else lives in the home, so check yours and get the landlord's agreement in writing.
Dad's block is in the Deptford Central zone. How will carers park?
They usually come by DLR or train, so they do not need to. If family bring a carer by car, buy a visitor e-voucher from the council for that day.
Could the carer take Dad to the Albany on Tuesdays?
Yes. The Albany asks people to get in touch or fill in a referral form before joining Meet Me, so contact them first. After that, the carer can take him along each week as part of his care plan.
