Live-in Care in Bayswater

Round-the-clock help in a W2 flat between Kensington Gardens and Westbourne Grove, from a carer who lives in, with Queensway, the park and the library on the doorstep.

Yes, we can arrange live-in care in Bayswater, provided the home has a bedroom the carer can use. The carer moves in, helps with personal care, tablets, cooking and trips out, and takes a daily break that we plan with you. It begins with a free assessment by Jackie, our registered manager, and a written care plan.

Counting the bedrooms first

Bayswater's period squares, such as Porchester Square, Princes Square and Kensington Gardens Square, were built as family houses and are now mostly flats. Some conversions kept generous rooms; others carved a large floor into a studio and a one-bedroom flat. Add the mansion blocks along Queensway and the post-war flats of the Hallfield Estate off Bishop's Bridge Road, and you get a neighbourhood where the spare room decides everything.

What we need is modest: a room with a door, a single bed, somewhere to hang clothes, and a window. A small second bedroom, a study or a former dining room with a door can all do the job. A sofa bed in the sitting room cannot, because the carer has to sleep properly every night for weeks.

What if the flat only has one bedroom?

Then live-in care is off the table for now, but there are still choices:

  • Visiting care in Bayswater, planned around the hardest parts of the day. Visits depend on which of our carers are free to make the journey from south-east London, so we check before agreeing a rota.
  • A sit-in service for the hours when someone shouldn't be alone.
  • A move within the family. Sometimes a parent stays with a son or daughter who does have the room, and the live-in carer joins them there.
  • A conversation with the council about a transfer or other housing, if the person is a social tenant and the flat no longer suits them.

Stairs, small lifts and the equipment question

A live-in carer makes a walk-up flat more workable, because there's someone to steady the person on the stairs and carry the shopping. It doesn't solve everything. A stairlift needs a straight run and the freeholder's permission on a shared staircase. A hoist needs floor space around the bed. In a building with a lift that takes two people at most, a wheelchair user may not fit with a helper. We look at all of this at the assessment and suggest asking the council for an occupational therapist where adaptations would help.

The carer's break: Kensington Gardens and Porchester Road

Bayswater is generous for a carer's time off. Kensington Gardens runs along the whole southern edge, with the Long Water and the Round Pond a short walk in. Queensway and Westbourne Grove have cafés and shops for an hour away from the flat.

For time out together, Paddington Library at 45 Porchester Road has level access and a lift, and is open seven days a week. The Greek Orthodox Cathedral of St Sophia is on Moscow Road, just off Queensway, and a carer can go with someone to services if that's in the care plan. During the carer's own break, the person needs company if they can't be left; we plan that cover with the family.

Changeover day. Incoming carers can arrive by Tube: the District and Circle lines to Bayswater (one stop from Paddington, where the Elizabeth line comes in from south-east London), or the Central line to Queensway or Lancaster Gate. Bayswater is in Westminster's parking zone B, and Westminster has no visitor permits to offer a driving carer, only pay-to-park bays. We plan around the train instead.

Coming home to Bayswater from hospital

St Mary's in Paddington, a short bus ride away, is the usual hospital for Bayswater. After a fall or an operation, the hard part of going home to a converted flat is the first few days on the stairs and in a cramped bathroom. A live-in carer who arrives on discharge day is there for each of those climbs. Call us while the ward is still planning the date; see our hospital discharge support page.

Is live-in care cheaper than a care home for someone in Bayswater?

It depends on the person, and we won't guess. For a couple, one carer covering both of them may compare well with two care-home places, but check it. The way to compare is with real figures: our written quote after the free assessment, and the costs of the homes the council or family are considering.

If the council may help pay, request a needs assessment through Westminster City Council; it then means-tests the contribution, and a personal budget can come as a direct payment you use with us. Where the needs are primarily medical, NHS Continuing Healthcare may pay instead. Our Westminster live-in care page sets out the council route, and live-in care in London explains how placements, breaks and holiday cover work.

Bayswater live-in care FAQs

Questions families ask us about Bayswater. If yours is not here, ask us directly.

Ask a question
Mum's spare room is tiny, barely more than a box room. Is that enough?

Often it is. If a single bed and a chest of drawers fit, and the door shuts, that's what a carer needs. We'll measure it at the assessment and tell you honestly.

Dad's flat is in a converted house off Westbourne Grove and the freeholder is strict. Does he need permission for a live-in carer?

A carer staying with him isn't usually a lease issue, but some leases say who may live in the flat, so read it or ask the managing agent. Fitting a stairlift or rails on the shared staircase does need the freeholder's consent.

Can the carer take Mum to the park every day?

Yes, if she's well enough and it's in the plan. Kensington Gardens is minutes away from most of Bayswater, and the carer can push a wheelchair if walking that far is too much.

Dad's flat is on the Hallfield Estate and the hospital wants him to have a profiling bed. How do we get it in?

Equipment like this usually comes through the hospital or the council's occupational therapist, who arranges delivery. Before it arrives, measure the lift and the route from the block entrance to the bedroom, and check with the estate office. We look at whether the room has space for the bed and for the carer to work on both sides of it.
