Home Care in Bayswater

Carers for older people and adults with disabilities in the squares and mansion flats between Kensington Gardens, Queensway and Westbourne Grove.

We can arrange home care in Bayswater, either visits at set times or a carer who lives in. It starts with a free assessment in the flat, and a written care plan follows. Bayswater is around 45 minutes from our Lewisham office, so for daily visits we check carer availability before we commit; live-in care is not affected by the distance.

Stucco, stairs and the Hallfield Estate

Most of Bayswater was built as tall white stucco houses around squares such as Leinster Square, Kensington Gardens Square and Porchester Square. Almost all of them are now flats, and a good number of those have hotels as neighbours. For an older resident the problem is usually the communal stairs, a lift that holds two people at a squeeze, or a bathroom fitted into what was once a cupboard.

Off Bishop's Bridge Road, the Hallfield Estate is different again: post-war council blocks set around open lawns, where the questions are about lifts, distances to the shops and who is nearby if something goes wrong. Spare bedrooms are scarce across Bayswater, and that matters for live-in care, which needs a room for the carer.

Can someone with dementia stay at home in Bayswater?

Often, yes, with the right support around them. Bayswater is unusually close to the NHS service that diagnoses it: the Westminster Memory Service, run by Central and North West London NHS Foundation Trust, is based at the Memory and Dementia Resource Centre at 42 Westbourne Park Road, W2. Ask the GP about a referral.

After a diagnosis, home care keeps the day steady: the same visit times, medication prompts, meals eaten, and someone who notices change. Our dementia care page explains how we approach it. For activities and family support, Age UK Westminster's dementia service is the place to ask; the 94 from Queensway or Lancaster Gate runs straight along Oxford Street to its monthly memory café at Regent Hall.

The park is on the doorstep. Kensington Gardens and Hyde Park run the whole length of Bayswater Road. A slow walk to the Italian Gardens at Lancaster Gate, or round the shops on Queensway and Westbourne Grove, is a proper outing, and helping someone get out like that is part of what a companionship visit is for.

Getting around W2

Bayswater has three stations close together: Bayswater (District and Circle lines), and Queensway and Lancaster Gate (Central line). Buses do much of the work along the park edge. The 148 runs down Bayswater Road to Marble Arch, Victoria, Westminster and St Thomas' Hospital, then on to Camberwell. The 94 goes along Oxford Street to Oxford Circus and Piccadilly Circus, and the 23 runs from Westbourne Grove and Queensway to Paddington and St Mary's Hospital, the usual hospital for this part of Westminster.

Who pays for home care in Bayswater?

Either the person pays privately, or Westminster City Council contributes after a needs assessment and a means test. The assessment can be requested online or by phone on 020 7641 2500, and People First explains how it works. NHS Continuing Healthcare is a separate route for people whose needs are mainly health needs. We don't give prices over the phone; you get a written figure after our assessment. Our Westminster page and our guide to paying for care in London go further.

Respite for the family carer

If you are the one doing the caring, perhaps a husband or wife in the same flat, a break is not a luxury. Respite care can mean a carer covering a few afternoons a week, a sit-in while you go out, or live-in cover while you are away. You can also ask the council for a carer's assessment of your own.

Bayswater FAQs

Questions families ask us about Bayswater. If yours is not here, ask us directly.

Ask a question
Mum's flat is on the top floor of a converted house off Leinster Square, with no lift. Can she still have care at home?

Yes. Carers can manage the stairs. The real question is whether Mum can, especially in an emergency or to get to appointments. We will talk that through with you honestly, and if she is becoming housebound, we will say so.

Is Bayswater in Westminster or Kensington and Chelsea?

Bayswater itself is in Westminster, in the Bayswater and Lancaster Gate council wards. The W2 postcode does cross into Kensington and Chelsea around Notting Hill, so if the address is towards Pembridge Square and Notting Hill, check the council tax bill before you apply.

Can a carer take Dad to his appointment at the Memory Service on Westbourne Park Road?

Yes. Going with someone to appointments can be written into the care plan, and it is a short trip from most of Bayswater. Tell us the date at the assessment so we can plan around it.

My aunt lives on the Hallfield Estate and struggles with the bath. Who sorts that out?

Start with a council needs assessment, which can lead to an occupational therapist visit and equipment such as a bath seat or a level-access shower. Carers can help her wash safely in the meantime.

Our flat has no spare room. Is live-in care still possible?

Not in the usual way, because a live-in carer needs a bedroom of their own. The alternative is a visiting package built around the hardest parts of the day, with sit-in support if someone should not be left alone.
