Live-in Care in Pimlico
A carer living in the second bedroom of a Pimlico flat, from Warwick Way down to the river, so a husband and wife can stay together at home.
Yes, we provide live-in care in Pimlico, across SW1V and the Pimlico end of SW1W. A carer moves into a spare bedroom and gives personal care, medication support, meals and company through the day, with an agreed daily break. We begin with a free assessment in the flat, then write a care plan, and Pimlico's direct rail link to our Lewisham office means we can get to you easily for that first visit and for reviews.
Before you call, three things to check. Is there a second bedroom, even a small one? Can the person still get in and out of the building, given the stairs or the lift? Does anyone else, such as a husband or wife, also need help? Those three answers shape almost every Pimlico live-in plan.
Can one live-in carer look after a couple in Pimlico?
Often, and this is where live-in care earns its keep in SW1V. Pimlico has a large older population living in flats they have shared for decades, and when one partner's needs grow the usual alternatives split them up: a care home for one, an empty flat for the other.
With a live-in carer, the partner who needs more help gets full personal care, and the other gets what they need: meals cooked, appointments remembered, a hand on the stairs, the shopping carried home. The carer also gives the healthier partner time off from caring, which is easy to underestimate. They can go to the Tachbrook Street market or a friend's for lunch knowing someone is in the flat.
The limit is the night. If both partners need help several times a night, or either needs two people to move them, one carer isn't safe or sustainable. We assess both people separately and tell you plainly if the plan needs more cover.
Room for a carer in a stucco flat or an estate block
A conversion in one of Cubitt's terraces is rarely the problem inside. Many two-bedroom flats have a second room that works well for a carer. The question is the building. If the flat is high up a house with no lift and the person can no longer manage the stairs, live-in care can keep them comfortable at home but can't give them back the street. Talk that through with us, and with Westminster's occupational therapists, before deciding.
On Churchill Gardens and Lillington Gardens, two-bedroom flats exist alongside one-bedroom ones, and most Churchill Gardens blocks have lifts. A one-bedroom flat can't take a live-in carer. In that case visiting care in Pimlico is the more realistic option, and because Pimlico is close to Lewisham by train, regular visits are realistic, subject to carer availability.
Home from St Thomas'
For most of Pimlico the nearest A&E is St Thomas' Hospital, just across the river in Lambeth, and western streets towards Belgravia sometimes deal with Chelsea and Westminster instead. A live-in carer suits a discharge here for a practical reason: the first nights home in an upper-floor flat are when a fall on the way to the bathroom is a real worry, and a carer sleeping in the next room is there if it happens. Ring us as soon as the ward talks about going home, so the assessment can happen before the date is set. If the person's needs are mainly health needs, ask the ward about NHS Continuing Healthcare at the same time.
How changeovers work from Victoria
Pimlico is one of the easiest places in Westminster for a carer changeover. A carer travelling from our side of London arrives at Victoria on a direct train from Lewisham, and Pimlico's streets begin just south of the station. The outgoing and incoming carers overlap at the flat, so the new carer learns the routine, the medicines and where everything is kept.
Family driving in should know two things. Pimlico is in Westminster's parking zone A, and the council runs no visitor permit scheme, so visitors pay in a kerbside bay, usually with a four-hour maximum. Parking inside the estates is managed separately under Westminster's housing estate permits. Check the council's visitor parking information before a long visit.
A break by the river
The carer's daily break needs somewhere to go, and Pimlico has good options within a few minutes' walk.
- Pimlico Gardens, on Grosvenor Road by the Thames, has a lawn under plane trees and disabled access.
- Pimlico Library on Lupus Street has level access to a ground-floor café and a lift down to the library, so it also works as an outing with a wheelchair user (see opening times).
- St George's Square is a garden square close to the river for a quiet sit.
If the person can't be left during the break, a family member can sit in, or we can plan a sit-in visit.
Funding and the next step
We give a written figure after the assessment, for one person or a couple. Westminster's needs assessment and financial assessment can also apply to live-in care, and a direct payment can be used with us; our Westminster live-in care page sets out that route. For the basics of how live-in care works, see live-in care in London.

Questions about live-in care in Pimlico
Questions families ask us about Pimlico. If yours is not here, ask us directly.
Ask a questionMy father looks after my mother in their Churchill Gardens flat, but he's exhausted. Can a live-in carer help both of them?
Yes, if the flat has a second bedroom. The carer takes on Mum's personal care and the heavy lifting of the day, and Dad gets back time for himself. He can also ask Westminster or Carers Network for a carer's assessment of his own.
Can the live-in carer go with Mum to her outpatient appointments at St Thomas'?
Yes, if it's in the care plan. From Pimlico that usually means a bus, the Tube or a taxi across the river, and the carer can note any changes the clinic makes to her medicines.
Mum has gone into St Thomas' and Dad can't manage alone in the flat. Can a live-in carer stay with him?
Yes, if there's a bedroom for the carer. The carer looks after Dad at home while Mum is in hospital and, if he's well enough, goes with him across the river to visit her. When Mum is ready to come home, we reassess both of them and adjust the plan.
Can a live-in carer cover a fortnight while I go away?
Yes. A short live-in stay is how our respite care often works, and it keeps the routine in the flat going while the family carer has a break.
