Live-in Care in Coombe
A carer who lives in your house on the hill between Kingston and New Malden, planned around long drives, private roads and the size of the home.
Yes. We arrange live-in care in Coombe, across the KT2 and KT3 streets between Kingston Hill, Coombe Lane West and the edge of New Malden. A trained carer moves into a spare room and supports one person, or a couple, with personal care, meals, medicines and getting out. Jackie, our registered manager, starts with a free assessment in the house and writes the care plan with you.
Room for a carer in a Coombe house
In most Coombe homes the bedroom count is not the question. Large detached houses on the private estates usually have a guest room, and some have an annexe or a room over the garage. What we look at is where that room sits. A carer who sleeps at the far end of a long landing, or on another floor, may not hear a call at two in the morning. A room near the person's own, plus a monitor or pendant alarm, is often the better plan.
Coombe also has smaller low-rise flats. A two-bedroom flat can work well for live-in care. A one-bedroom flat cannot, because the carer needs a bedroom of their own and a sofa bed is not enough for weeks at a time. In that case look at visiting home care in Coombe, or at a move to somewhere with a second bedroom.
Grand staircases, split levels and equipment
Bigger houses bring their own access problems. Curved staircases need a made-to-measure stairlift, which takes longer to arrange than a straight one, and houses built into the slope can have short flights between rooms. Where a hoist or profiling bed is needed, the occupational therapist checks that the room and doorways allow safe use. The carer is trained to use what is installed, but cannot lift someone by hand in place of equipment assessed as necessary. In a flat, check the lift takes a wheelchair.
How does a live-in carer get to Coombe on changeover day?
Coombe has no station, so we plan every changeover from the last mile backwards. A carer coming by rail usually gets off at Norbiton or New Malden on South Western Railway and takes a bus up the hill: the 57 along Coombe Lane West, or the 85 or K3 on Kingston Hill. With a suitcase, or for a house deep in a private estate, a taxi is often simpler.
Driveways make the car side easy. If the house has none, or the arriving and departing carers both need to park for the handover, check the street on the council's parking zones search. Where it falls inside a zone that allows them, visitor vouchers cover a car for the hour or day of the overlap. On estates with their own rules about vehicles, tell the estate office when a new carer is due.
Will the carer need to drive? Shops and surgeries are a ride away from most Coombe roads. If you want the carer to drive your relative in the family car, tell us at the assessment so we match a carer with a full licence; your insurance must name them. Otherwise, buses and taxis go into the care plan.
The carer's daily break: parkland on the doorstep
Every live-in carer has a daily break, and in Coombe the break can be spent outdoors. Ladderstile Gate, the old pedestrian gate into Richmond Park on the Coombe side, is within walking distance of the northern streets. Wimbledon Common lies just beyond the A3 on the eastern side. For errands or a library, Kingston town centre and New Malden High Street are a short bus ride down the hill.
Someone, perhaps a partner or neighbour, sits with your relative meanwhile. For someone living with dementia, the council's partner directory Connected Kingston lists dementia-friendly groups across the borough that the carer can take them to, and a session can double as break cover.
Is live-in care worth it for a few weeks after hospital?
Often it is, in a Coombe house. After specialist treatment at St George's in Tooting, or an emergency stay at Kingston Hospital at the foot of the hill, the hard part is usually the house itself: stairs between floors, a bathroom a long corridor away from the bedroom, and nobody within earshot at night. A carer living in for the first weeks covers exactly those gaps, then the arrangement can end or change to visits. Ask the ward about the council's free reablement too, and call us while the discharge date is still being set. Our hospital discharge care page explains how we work with the ward.
Paying for live-in care in Coombe
We quote in writing after the free assessment, not over the phone. Coombe is in the Royal Borough of Kingston upon Thames, so council help starts with a care needs assessment and a means test. Where needs are mainly health needs, ask about NHS Continuing Healthcare. Our Kingston live-in care page covers direct payments, and live-in care in London explains carer rotations.

Live-in care in Coombe: your questions
Questions families ask us about Coombe. If yours is not here, ask us directly.
Ask a questionThe guest room is on the top floor. Can the carer sleep there?
Possibly, if your relative sleeps through and has a way to call for help that the carer will hear. If they get up in the night, we will usually suggest a room closer to theirs, and Jackie will talk it through when she visits.
How will the carer get to us from Norbiton station?
By bus up Kingston Hill or along Coombe Lane West, or by taxi if the house is deep inside a private estate or the carer has luggage. We confirm the arrangement with you before each changeover.
Dad already has a cleaner and a gardener. What does the live-in carer do in the house?
The carer's work is about your father: personal care, meals, medicines, his laundry and keeping his rooms tidy, plus company and outings. They don't take over the cleaning of a large house or the garden, so existing help can carry on. The care plan sets out who does what.
Does the estate need to know a carer is living with us?
It helps. Some Coombe estates manage gates and vehicle access, so letting the estate office know about changeover days avoids a carer being stuck at the barrier.
