Live-in Care in Worcester Park

In a 1930s semi off Central Road, live-in care usually comes down to three things: the box room, the bathroom and the carer's train from Waterloo.

Yes, we provide live-in care in Worcester Park. A carer moves into the home with a bedroom of their own and supports the person through the day with personal care, meals, medication, housework and getting out. This page is about the Sutton side of KT4; for addresses on the Kingston side, see live-in care in Kingston upon Thames. Either way, the first step is a free assessment at home with Jackie, our registered manager.

The box room question

Most Worcester Park houses are 1920s and 1930s semis and short terraces. That usually means two good bedrooms and a third, smaller room over the front door. Whether that room works for a live-in carer is the first thing we check. It needs to take a single bed, somewhere to hang clothes and a door that closes. If it is full of boxes, clearing it is the first practical job for the family.

Two situations change the sums:

  • A couple who now sleep apart. If one partner has moved to the second bedroom because of a hospital bed or broken nights, the box room is the only room left for the carer, so it has to be usable.
  • A loft conversion. Some semis have one. The carer can sleep up there, but they will then be two floors above someone who may be sleeping downstairs. We agree at the assessment how the carer will hear the person at night.

Newer flats along Central Road need two bedrooms for live-in care. Where there is only one, home care in Worcester Park explains the visiting option.

Hoists, stairlifts and the front room

The interwar layout has the bathroom upstairs and often no downstairs toilet. When stairs become unsafe, the front room is the usual place for a bed, and a commode fills the gap. If a hoist is needed, it wants space on both sides of the bed and room to turn, which in a typical front room means moving the dining table or a sofa. The straight staircases in most semis suit a stairlift, but not for someone who needs to be hoisted. Sutton Council's occupational therapy service can assess for equipment and adaptations. Fitting them before the carer starts saves rearranging the house twice.

How do carers get to Worcester Park for a changeover?

Most of the borough is on Southern or Thameslink, but Worcester Park station is on South Western Railway, between Waterloo and Epsom by way of Wimbledon. Wimbledon is a big interchange, with the District line, Thameslink and trams, so carers can reach Worcester Park from most of London with one change.

National Rail describes step-free access to both platforms: a ramp of about 1 in 14 to the main entrance and the London-bound platform, and lifts to the Epsom-bound platform, though the step-free route there is about 150 metres longer. That is good news for a carer with a suitcase and for a trip out in a wheelchair.

For a carer who drives, two controlled areas matter. Sutton runs a Longfellow CPZ (Longfellow Road is a few minutes from the station), and the council's WP2 (Moreton Road area) Permit Parking Area runs Monday to Friday, 10am to noon only. In WP2, a handover in the afternoon needs no voucher at all.

A break on Central Road or at Cuddington Rec

The carer's daily break is protected time. Central Road has the cafés and shops for a coffee or an errand. For fresh air, Cuddington Recreation Ground on St Clair Drive covers nearly 10 hectares and has a bowls club, tennis courts and an outdoor gym, and the council lists a smaller ground on Dorchester Road. For someone who enjoys bowls, the club at Cuddington may also be an outing the carer can take them to, if the club agrees.

If the person can't be left, the two hours need covering. A relative who lives on the Kingston side of KT4 or along the 213 route can often call in; if not, we agree another arrangement and write it into the plan before the first carer starts.

After a hospital stay. Most Sutton residents are discharged from St Helier Hospital in Carshalton. From Worcester Park that is a longer trip than from most of the borough, so outpatient follow-ups take planning. A carer in the house can go with the person, and in the first weeks home can watch for changes the community nurses should know about. See hospital discharge support.

Can Sutton Council pay towards live-in care in Worcester Park?

It can contribute if the person qualifies after a needs assessment and a financial assessment. The council's guidance says people with savings above £23,250 usually pay the full cost, and that a council budget can be paid as a direct payment, which can go to the provider you choose. Where needs are mainly health needs, ask the GP or hospital about NHS Continuing Healthcare. The details are on our live-in care in Sutton page, and the live-in care page explains the service. After the free assessment, we quote in writing.

Questions families ask us about Worcester Park. If yours is not here, ask us directly.

Ask a question
Our semi has a loft conversion. Can the carer sleep up there?

Yes, if it is a proper bedroom. The question is whether the carer can hear the person two floors down. We'll look at where the person sleeps and agree how the carer is called during the night.

Dad needs a hoist. Will it fit in the front room of a 1930s semi?

Usually, once some furniture is moved. A council occupational therapist can measure up, and we'll look at the room with you at the assessment.

We're in the Moreton Road permit area. When should changeovers happen?

WP2 only operates from 10am to noon on weekdays, so a changeover in the afternoon or at the weekend needs no visitor voucher. If it has to be in the morning, use your household's free visitor hours.

Mum lives in Worcester Park but pays council tax to Kingston. Can you still help?

Yes. Live-in care works the same on either side of the boundary. Only the council changes: Kingston would handle any assessment or funding.

Dad used to play bowls. Could the carer take him to Cuddington Rec?

If he'd enjoy it and it's safe for him, yes. The carer can go with him and help him there and back. Ask the bowls club about visitors or membership first.
