Live-in Care in Berrylands
The 1930s semis of Berrylands were built for families, and the spare bedroom that once belonged to a grown-up child is often exactly what a live-in carer needs.
Yes, we provide live-in care in Berrylands, and its family houses are among the easiest in Kingston to set it up in. A carer moves into a spare room and supports the person through the day, with a break of their own written into the plan. It begins with a free assessment at home by Jackie, our registered manager, and a written care plan before anyone moves in.
Which room becomes the carer's?
In a typical three-bedroom semi there are two good answers, and the right one depends on how the person moves about.
Everyone upstairs. If your relative can still manage the stairs, with a rail, a hand on the arm or a stairlift, they keep their own bedroom and the carer takes the second bedroom across the landing. Being on the same floor makes it easy for the carer to hear if help is needed in the night.
Person downstairs, carer upstairs. Once the stairs stop being safe, the front reception room often becomes a bedroom, with a commode or a downstairs toilet nearby. The carer can still sleep upstairs, but we then agree how they will be called: a plug-in alarm or a simple baby monitor is common. If someone needs help many times a night, one carer cannot do that for long, and we will say so and explain the alternatives.
The smallest third bedroom can work for the carer if it takes a single bed and storage. A room still full of boxes is worth clearing before the start date.
Is a Berrylands semi big enough for a couple and a carer?
Usually. One partner keeps the main bedroom, the carer has the second, and the third stays free for family visits or equipment. A carer can give personal care to the partner who needs it and lighter help to the other, so the couple stay together in the home they may have lived in for decades. If both partners need two people for every transfer, that changes the picture, and we would talk it through openly.
Changeover day at Berrylands station
When the main carer takes time off, a second carer covers, and we tell you in advance who is coming. A carer travelling by train has an easy run: Berrylands station is about 25 minutes from Waterloo on South Western Railway, and the K2 bus stops outside. The platforms are reached by stairs from the ticket office, which is worth knowing for a carer with a heavy case.
Parking is simple for a carer who drives. The council's list of parking zones covers central Kingston, Surbiton and a handful of permit streets, and as far as we can see Berrylands' residential roads are not on it. Many semis also have a drive. Check your own road on the council's list before the first changeover, in case it has changed.
The carer's break, close to home
Berrylands has plenty of green space within a short walk, which suits a carer who wants fresh air in their break. There are Alexandra Recreation Ground, the Fishponds, Berrylands Park, and the Raeburn open space beside the Hogsmill, where a footbridge opened in 2018 to make a nature trail. For errands there are the parades on Chiltern Drive, Alexandra Drive and Berrylands Road, and Surbiton Library is on Ewell Road.
Someone sits with your relative during that break, which might be you, a neighbour or a session at a day centre. Staywell's Raleigh House in New Malden takes over-65s, including people living with dementia, on weekdays.
Outings with the carer. A morning on a bench in Alexandra Recreation Ground or a walk to the shops on Chiltern Drive is part of the care plan, not the carer's break. Tell us what your relative enjoys, and we build it in.
Coming home from hospital to a 1930s house
Berrylands patients are usually treated at Kingston Hospital, and the K2 runs there from the station. After a hip operation or a fall, the stairs and the upstairs bathroom are the problems. Before discharge, ask the ward whether an occupational therapist can check the house, and whether a bed downstairs is needed for the first weeks. A live-in carer can then help with washing, dressing and exercises at home while confidence returns. See our hospital discharge support.
Can the council help pay for live-in care in Berrylands?
Possibly. Kingston Council assesses care needs and then income and savings, and a personal budget can be taken as a direct payment to buy live-in care. If needs are mainly health needs, the NHS may fund care through Continuing Healthcare. We give a written quote after the assessment. Our Kingston live-in care page has the council details, our London live-in care guide covers how it works, and visiting care in Berrylands is an option where we have a carer nearby.

Berrylands live-in care questions
Questions families ask us about Berrylands. If yours is not here, ask us directly.
Ask a questionMum sleeps downstairs now. Will the carer be able to hear her from upstairs?
We agree a way for her to call the carer before care starts, usually a plug-in alarm or monitor. If she needs help most nights, we look again at whether one live-in carer is the right arrangement.
Our road is close to Berrylands station. Will the carer's car be ticketed?
Most residential roads in Berrylands are not in a controlled zone, but check yours on the council's parking zones list. If it turns out to be controlled, visitor vouchers cover a changeover.
Can one carer look after both my parents in their semi?
Often, when one needs most of the help. The second bedroom goes to the carer, and we write a care plan covering both of them.
Where does the carer go on their daily break?
Wherever they like. In Berrylands they have parks, the Hogsmill paths and the local parades within a few minutes' walk. Someone agreed in the care plan stays with your relative meanwhile.
