Live-in Care in Gospel Oak
For council tenants and long-settled couples below Parliament Hill who want to stay in the flat they know, with a carer living in the spare room.
Yes, we can provide live-in care in Gospel Oak, as long as there is a separate bedroom for the carer. The carer lives in and supports one person, or both partners in a couple, following a care plan agreed after our free assessment at home. Because the carer is resident, the journey across London from our Lewisham office does not limit the cover.
Live-in care in a council flat: what to sort out first
Much of Gospel Oak is Camden Council housing, from the blocks around Lismore Circus to Kiln Place and the low-rise homes on Dunboyne Road. A live-in placement in a tenanted flat raises three practical points before anything else.
- The room. Many older tenants have a second bedroom that has been empty, or used for storage, since their children moved out. That room is what makes live-in care possible. It needs clearing into a proper bedroom with a bed, storage and a door that closes.
- The landlord. Tell Camden, or the housing association, that a carer will be living in the flat as part of their job. The carer does not become a tenant and gains no right to stay once the placement ends.
- Equipment. A hospital bed or hoist has to fit beside the bed with room for the carer to work. In a maisonette with internal stairs, the bedroom may need to move downstairs. Camden's occupational therapists can assess this; refer through the council's online form.
If there is no spare room, see our home care in Gospel Oak page for visiting options.
Can a couple in Gospel Oak share one live-in carer?
Often, yes, and it is the arrangement that keeps a couple together in the home they have shared for decades. One carer can give full personal care to the partner who needs it most and lighter help to the other: cooking, collecting prescriptions, a steady arm on the walkways and stairs. It works less well when both partners need two people for transfers, or when nights are regularly broken for both. We assess each partner separately and tell you plainly if one carer would be stretched too thin.
Changeovers on the Overground
Gospel Oak station is where the Suffragette line starts, and the Mildmay line also stops there. A carer arriving at a changeover can connect at Highbury & Islington for the Victoria line, or at West Hampstead for the Jubilee line and Thameslink. The platforms are well above the street, reached by stairs or one of two lifts, so a carer with a heavy case should check lift status on TfL's accessibility information before travelling. Kentish Town station, with Thameslink and the Northern line, is about a mile's walk away.
If the home is on a Camden estate and someone needs to drive in, ask the estate office, or Contact Camden on 020 7974 4444, about estate parking well before the day. On ordinary streets, the resident buys a Camden short-stay visitor permit.
Breaks under Parliament Hill
The carer's daily break, and the person's own outings, both have good options nearby. Hampstead Heath runs along Gordon House Road beside the station, with Parliament Hill Lido at the Gospel Oak entrance. The Queen's Crescent street market and the community library further along the Crescent are both within a short walk of Lismore Circus. Kentish Town City Farm, off Grafton Road, is open daily with free entry, which makes it an easy outing to plan.
Back from the Royal Free. The hospital on Pond Street is a short bus ride up the hill. If someone is coming home weaker than they went in, a live-in carer can be in place for the first nights, which are often the hardest. Mention live-in care to the ward early, and ask whether an NHS Continuing Healthcare checklist is due.
How is live-in care paid for in Gospel Oak?
Through the same routes as anywhere in Camden. The council assesses needs and then means-tests the contribution, and can pay its share as a direct payment you use with an agency like ours. NHS Continuing Healthcare funds care in full where needs are primarily health needs. We quote in writing after the assessment. The detail is on our Camden live-in care page.

Live-in care around Lismore Circus and Queen's Crescent: questions
Questions families ask us about Gospel Oak. If yours is not here, ask us directly.
Ask a questionMy brother stays in Mum's spare room at weekends. Can a carer have it?
The carer needs the room as their own for the whole placement, with their belongings left in place. If your brother still needs to stay over, the family will need another arrangement for him, such as a sofa bed in the living room.
Does a live-in carer affect Dad's council tenancy?
The tenancy stays in his name and the carer does not gain any rights to the flat. Check the tenancy agreement and let Camden know before the carer moves in, so the housing office is not surprised.
Mum has lived on the estate for forty years and knows everyone. Will a carer get in the way of that?
The aim is the opposite. The carer can help her keep up market days on Queen's Crescent, chats on the landing and visits to neighbours, which become hard to manage alone once mobility goes.
Only one of my parents needs real help. Do we pay for care for both?
The quote reflects the care the household needs. One carer can support the frailer partner fully and lend a hand to the other. We explain what the price covers after we have assessed both of them.
