Live-in Care in Swiss Cottage

A carer living in a high-rise flat on the Chalcots Estate or a mansion block off Finchley Road, for older people and for younger adults with a physical disability.

Yes, we provide live-in care in Swiss Cottage, on both the NW3 and NW6 sides of Finchley Road. A trained carer lives in the flat and supports the person through the day and evening, with a daily break, following a written care plan agreed after our free home assessment. Live-in carers move in, so the journey from our Lewisham office doesn't limit what we can offer here.

One floor, two bedrooms: why a flat can suit live-in care

Most homes in Swiss Cottage are flats: the towers of the Chalcots Estate along Adelaide Road, purpose-built blocks around the junction, and mansion flats off Finchley Road. For live-in care, a flat on one level has real advantages. There are no internal stairs, the bathroom is a few steps from the bedroom, and a carer can hear the person from the next room.

What decides it is the bedroom count. The carer needs a room of their own, so a two-bedroom flat is the starting point. In a one-bedroom flat live-in care isn't possible, and we would talk about visiting care in Swiss Cottage instead, subject to carer availability. If you rent from Camden Council or a housing association, tell your landlord before a carer moves in.

What happens if the lift fails with a live-in carer in the flat?

In a tower, a live-in carer changes what a lift breakdown means. Someone who lives alone on a high floor can be stranded by a broken lift for days, with no way to reach the shops or a hospital appointment. With a carer living in, the person is never on their own while it is repaired: the carer can fetch shopping and medicines on foot and keep the routine going indoors.

What the carer cannot do is carry someone down the stairs. So the care plan sets out who to call about the lift, how to rearrange appointments, and what happens in an emergency. Since 6 April 2026, the responsible person for a residential building in England that is at least 18 metres or seven storeys high (and some lower buildings with a simultaneous evacuation strategy) must offer residents who would struggle to get out in a fire a person-centred fire risk assessment, which can lead to a personal evacuation plan, known as a Residential PEEP. If you live in a tower, ask the landlord or building manager for one, and tell them a live-in carer is part of the household.

Measure the lift before ordering equipment. A hoist, profiling bed or riser chair has to come up in the lift and through the flat door. Ask the supplier, or the occupational therapist, to check the lift dimensions first.

Live-in support for younger disabled adults

Not everyone who needs a live-in carer is old. Our CQC registration covers adults under 65 with physical disabilities and sensory impairments, and a step-free flat in a lifted block can be a good base for independent living. A live-in carer can help with personal care, cooking, getting to work or college, and keeping the flat running, built around the person's own week.

Adaptations such as a level-access shower or wider doors may be funded by a Disabled Facilities Grant, which is applied for through the council. If Camden funds your care, you can ask for a direct payment and use it to choose your provider. PeoplePlus runs the service Camden commissions to help people manage direct payments, and our complex care page covers support for long-term conditions.

Getting carers in and out

Changeovers here are straightforward by Tube. Swiss Cottage station is on the Jubilee line, and Finchley Road, a short walk north, has the Jubilee and Metropolitan lines, with buses running the length of Finchley Road. Parking is the hard part: the junction is busy and the side streets are controlled, so relatives who drive in for a handover need a Camden visitor permit bought through the resident's parking account. A carer arriving by Tube needs neither.

The carer's break, and outings for the person

Swiss Cottage is well set up for a carer's daily break. Swiss Cottage Library on Avenue Road, the Grade II listed building designed by Basil Spence, has seating and study space, and Swiss Cottage Open Space, by Hampstead Theatre, is right outside. Primrose Hill is a short walk south.

For the person, outings are close and mostly flat. The Swiss Cottage Farmers' Market runs on Eton Avenue every Wednesday from 10am to 3pm, beside Hampstead Theatre. A carer can push a wheelchair there and on to the library without tackling the hills of Hampstead.

After a stay at the Royal Free

The Royal Free in Hampstead is the usual hospital for Swiss Cottage. If a hospital stay is the reason you are looking at live-in care, call us while the discharge is being planned, so the assessment can happen before the person comes home.

How is live-in care in Swiss Cottage paid for?

Through Camden's means-tested social care, through NHS Continuing Healthcare if needs are mainly health needs, or privately. Our Camden live-in care page sets out the council route. We give a written quote after the free assessment; read more on the London live-in care page.

Swiss Cottage live-in care: your questions

Questions families ask us about Swiss Cottage. If yours is not here, ask us directly.

Ask a question
We're in a Chalcots tower. Can the carer stay in our second bedroom?

Yes, provided the room is the carer's own for the whole placement. Check your tenancy and let the council know a carer will be living in as part of your care.

I'm 40 and use a wheelchair. Is live-in care only for older people?

No. Our registration includes younger adults with a physical disability or sensory impairment, and a step-free flat in a lifted block here can work well. The plan follows your own week: work, study, the gym at the leisure centre, evenings out.

Who do we call if the lift breaks down?

Your landlord or managing agent, as you would now. We write the number into the care plan, along with how the carer should handle shopping, medicines and appointments until the lift is fixed.

Can the carer take Dad to the Wednesday market on Eton Avenue?

Yes. Outings like that can go into the care plan. It is close, flat and easy with a wheelchair or walking frame.
