Live-in Care in King's Cross and Somers Town

A carer who lives with you, from the council blocks of Somers Town and Cromer Street to the canal-side flats of N1C, with Chalton Street market, the towpath and Great Croft close by.

We can arrange live-in care across King's Cross and Somers Town, in NW1, N1C and WC1. A trained carer lives in, using the spare bedroom, and supports your relative, or both of you as a couple, day to day, under a care plan agreed after a free home assessment. Because three mainline stations meet here, this is one of the simplest places in London to run a live-in placement from.

Does your King's Cross home have room for a carer?

Start with the bedrooms. A live-in carer needs one to themselves, and in King's Cross the answer splits along the line of the railway.

In the newer flats north of the stations, two-bedroom layouts are common and the buildings were designed with lifts and level floors, so a carer's room, a wheelchair and a hoist can usually all be accommodated. In Somers Town and around Cromer Street and Argyle Street, much of the housing belongs to Camden or to housing associations, and many of those flats have a single bedroom. Some are walk-ups with no lift at all.

If there is no second bedroom, live-in care is not possible in that flat, and we will say so plainly. The realistic alternatives are visiting care in King's Cross, which is more practical for us here than in most of Camden, or a mix of day care and visits. If you are a council tenant thinking of moving to a smaller flat, talk to us first: a spare bedroom you are about to give up may be the room that makes live-in care possible.

Changeovers at the station on your doorstep

Live-in carers work in rotations, and on changeover day the relief carer arrives with a suitcase. In King's Cross that is easy. King's Cross, St Pancras International and Euston bring in mainline trains from across the country, Thameslink runs through St Pancras, and six Underground lines stop at King's Cross St Pancras. A relief carer can walk from the platform to most Somers Town and Cromer Street addresses.

That helps the handover too: the outgoing carer can stay to talk through the week and the medication record and still catch their train.

Cars are rarely needed. If a carer does drive, the resident can buy short-stay visitor permits online through a Camden parking account. In N1C, check parking with the building management.

Time off: the canal, a nature reserve and two libraries

Each day the carer has a protected break. King's Cross gives them more choice than most of the borough:

  • The Regent's Canal towpath and the steps of Granary Square, for a walk or somewhere to sit by the water.
  • Camley Street Natural Park, London Wildlife Trust's reserve beside the canal, with a visitor centre and the Kingfisher Café.
  • Pancras Square Library, Camden's library in the same building as the King's Cross leisure centre, and the British Library on Euston Road, whose public spaces are free to use.

Keeping your relative's week going

Chalton Street Market is a few minutes' walk from most Somers Town flats. The Somers Town Community Association at 150 Ossulston Street has a café space and runs regular activities and classes. On Cromer Street, Age UK Camden's Great Croft Day Care Centre offers weekday day care for older people with complex needs; the carer can get your relative ready and take them there, and the day can cover the carer's break.

Somers Town has a long-established Bangladeshi community, many with family roots in Sylhet, alongside families who have lived on the estates for generations. Whatever a household's background, tell us what matters at home: food and how it is prepared, prayer times, how visitors are received, which family members take part in decisions. It goes into the care plan so that every relief carer follows it. If you would like a carer who speaks a particular language, ask, and we will tell you honestly whether we can match it.

A couple who want to stay in their own flat. One live-in carer can support husband and wife together, so neither has to move to a care home alone. If one of you needs two people to transfer, or nights are regularly broken, we will be straight with you at the assessment about whether one carer is enough.

Home from UCH to a walk-up flat

King's Cross residents are usually discharged from University College Hospital on Euston Road. The hard discharges are often back to a flat up several flights of stairs, where the first week brings the stairs, the bathroom and the shopping all at once. A carer living in from the day of discharge covers that week without a string of separate visitors. Let us know as soon as a date is being discussed, so we can assess the flat and settle the carer's room first. See hospital discharge support.

Funding, briefly

King's Cross west of York Way is Camden, so a needs assessment goes through Camden Adult Social Care; the live-in care in Camden page sets out the council route, direct payments and NHS Continuing Healthcare. Addresses east of York Way are in Islington. If you pay privately, the quote comes in writing after our free assessment; live-in care in London explains the service.

Questions families in King's Cross ask

Questions families ask us about King's Cross. If yours is not here, ask us directly.

Ask a question
Mum goes to Great Croft three days a week. Is live-in care still worth it?

It can be. The carer covers mornings, evenings, the other four days and the nights she needs someone in the flat, and her Great Croft days give the carer time for their break. Keep the days she enjoys and build the plan around them.

Our flat is on the fourth floor with no lift. Can a live-in carer manage?

Indoors, usually yes. Getting out is the harder part: if your relative can no longer manage the stairs, the carer cannot safely carry them. We will talk about what that means for outings and appointments, and whether to ask Camden about rehousing or adaptations.

Can the carer cook the food Dad has always eaten?

Yes. Show the carer how he likes it, write down any halal or other requirements, and we will keep the recipes and the rules in the care plan for every carer who comes after.

We live in a new-build flat in N1C. Does the building need to know a carer is moving in?

Tell the concierge or building management, so the carer can get a fob or key and relief carers are expected on changeover day. If you rent, check the tenancy as well.
