Live-in Care in Hendon
Live-in care for NW4 and West Hendon, often arranged as someone comes home from the Royal Free, with a carer living in the house once the care plan is agreed.
Yes, JNP Sidona provides live-in care in Hendon, including the Brent Street area, Hendon Central and the new blocks at West Hendon. After a free home assessment and a written care plan, a carer moves in and lives alongside the person. Coming home from hospital is a common point to start live-in care, so this page starts there.
Can live-in care start when Dad leaves the Royal Free?
Often it can, as long as we hear early. Southern Hendon is mostly served by the Royal Free Hospital in Hampstead, and some households further north go to Barnet Hospital; the same NHS trust runs both. The ward will hold a discharge discussion with the family. That is the moment to call us, not the day the transport is booked. We need time to visit the house, read the discharge notes, write the care plan and match a carer, and we will not promise a start date before we have done that.
Live-in care is a good fit for the weeks after a hospital stay. The first nights at home are when people fall, forget new tablets or stop eating. A carer who is in the house notices those things as they happen and can tell the family, the GP or the community team. The NHS guide to care after a hospital stay explains what the hospital should arrange before discharge, including any equipment.
Getting the house ready
Hendon has two very different kinds of home, and each needs different preparation.
In the interwar semis around Hendon Central and Brent Street, there is usually a spare bedroom for the carer. The difficulty tends to be the person's own room, which is upstairs. For a while after discharge, one option is a bed in the front room, sometimes a hospital bed supplied through the community team, with a commode until the stairs are manageable again. The carer can then sleep upstairs in the spare room and still be close at hand.
In the towers going up at West Hendon by the Welsh Harp, the lift and level floors make a hospital bed, a wheelchair and a hoist easy to bring in. The question there is bedrooms. A live-in carer needs one of their own, so a two-bedroom flat works only if the second room is genuinely free. If it is not, our visiting care in Hendon is the other route, where we have carers free for the times needed.
How the carer gets to Hendon
Live-in carers hand over to each other at set intervals, so it helps that Hendon is easy to reach. Hendon and Brent Cross West stations are on Thameslink, which runs through London Bridge, Blackfriars and Farringdon, and the Northern line's Edgware branch stops at Hendon Central. That gives a carer arriving with a bag two direct ways in from central London.
Around Hendon Central and Brent Street, controlled parking zones apply. If a relative drives in for the handover, buy Barnet visitor permits in advance.
Breaks, Shabbat and the rest of the week
The carer's daily break is agreed in the care plan. Hendon Park is a couple of minutes' walk from Hendon Central station, Sunny Hill Park has wide views from the top of the hill, and Hendon Library on The Burroughs offers somewhere quiet indoors. Brent Cross shopping centre is close by for errands.
Once the person is stronger, the carer can take them out too. For someone with mild to moderate dementia, there are Age UK Barnet's day sessions for people with dementia at 154 Station Road. In observant households around Brent Street, we plan the week around Shabbat and festivals, including when changeovers happen, so a new carer never arrives in the middle of one.
When it is a husband and wife. Discharge often happens to one half of a couple, and the other has been managing alone for weeks. One live-in carer can support both: personal care and medication for the person coming home, and some help with meals, shopping and the house for their partner. Read how live-in care for couples works.
Will the NHS or the council pay for live-in care in Hendon?
Sometimes, in part or in full. Ask the ward whether an NHS Continuing Healthcare checklist should be done before discharge; if the person's needs are mainly health needs, CHC can pay the whole cost of care at home. Otherwise, Barnet Council assesses needs through Social Care Direct and then means-tests what you pay. The council can give its share as a direct payment to use with an agency you choose. For private payers, we quote in writing after the assessment. The details of the Barnet route are on our Barnet live-in care page.

Hendon live-in care questions
Questions families ask us about Hendon. If yours is not here, ask us directly.
Ask a questionThe ward at the Royal Free says Mum could go home this week. Is it too late to call?
Call anyway. We will tell you straight away what we can arrange and when. If we cannot be ready in time, say so to the ward, because discharge can be planned around safe care being in place.
Will the carer change over on Shabbat?
Not if the household does not want that. Tell us at the assessment, and we will schedule changeovers for weekdays or after Shabbat ends, and avoid festivals.
Dad's new flat in West Hendon has two bedrooms, but one is full of boxes. Does that matter?
Only until it is cleared. The carer needs a bed, some storage and a door that closes. Once the room is ready, the flat's lift and level access make it a good place for live-in care.
Once Dad is stronger, can the carer take him to the Age UK sessions on Station Road?
Yes, if he has mild to moderate dementia and Age UK Barnet offers him a place. The Hendon sessions at 154 Station Road run on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, and Age UK charges for them separately. The carer can get him ready, go with him or see him onto the transport, and be at home when he gets back.
Can live-in care be short-term, just until Dad is back on his feet?
Yes. Live-in care can cover the first few weeks after discharge, followed by a move to visiting care or no care at all. We review the plan with you as he recovers.
