Home Care in Hendon, NW4 and West Hendon

Visiting and live-in care for Hendon households, from Brent Street and Hendon Central to The Burroughs and the new towers by the Welsh Harp.

Yes, we provide home care in Hendon. After a free assessment at home and a written care plan, we arrange either a live-in carer, which we can do anywhere in NW4 and West Hendon, or visiting care where we have a carer free for the times you need. Hendon is one of the parts of Barnet we reach most easily from Lewisham, though it is still a long way, so visits are agreed case by case.

From Brent Street to the Welsh Harp

Hendon is several neighbourhoods strung along a few main roads, and they do not look alike.

Brent Street is the old high street, at the heart of a large Orthodox Jewish community. Hendon Central grew up around the Tube station that opened in 1923, facing a circus of shopping parades on the Watford Way. Around both are interwar semis and terraces. The Burroughs, further north, is older: Hendon Town Hall, the library, Middlesex University and a few 18th- and 19th-century houses.

Then there is West Hendon, along the A5 by the Brent Reservoir, better known as the Welsh Harp. The 1960s West Hendon estate is being replaced by the Hendon Waterside development, a cluster of towers overlooking the reservoir.

A semi with stairs or a flat with a lift

The two halves of Hendon raise different questions at an assessment. In a NW4 semi the questions are usually about stairs, a bath with no shower, and whether a bed needs to come downstairs for a while. There is usually a spare room, so a live-in carer is easy to accommodate.

In the new West Hendon blocks it is the other way round. Lifts and level floors make wheelchairs, hoists and hospital beds simple to bring in, but a two-bedroom flat with a family already in it rarely has a room free for a live-in carer. Visits, or a family member living in with respite cover from us, tend to fit better there.

How far is Hendon from your office?

Roughly 50 to 60 minutes from Lewisham High Street. Hendon Central is on the Edgware branch of the Northern line. Hendon station, on Station Road in West Hendon beside the M1, is on Thameslink, which runs straight through Blackfriars and Farringdon. That gives a carer from south-east London two ways in, which is why Hendon is more workable for visits than most of Barnet. Once here, the 183 runs from Golders Green along Brent Street past the Town Hall to Hendon station, and the 143 and 326 link Hendon Central with Finchley.

It is still not next door. We have no office or team in Barnet. Tell us the address and the visit times and we will say yes or no straight away, and suggest live-in care if the visits are not realistic.

Dementia day sessions on Station Road. Age UK Barnet runs dementia day opportunities at 154 Station Road, NW4, on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, for people with mild to moderate memory problems. Lunch is included and transport can be added. Book through Age UK Barnet on 020 8203 5040. A day there and a dementia care plan at home can sit side by side.

Coming home from the Royal Free

Most of southern Hendon is treated at the Royal Free Hospital in Hampstead, while some households further north use Barnet Hospital. Both belong to the Royal Free London NHS Foundation Trust. If a discharge date is being discussed, phone us before it is fixed, not on the morning itself, so we can check what we can cover. See how hospital discharge support works.

Who pays for home care in Hendon?

That depends on the assessments. Barnet Council's needs assessment comes through Social Care Direct (020 8359 5000), and a means test then decides your contribution. If someone's needs are primarily health needs, NHS Continuing Healthcare may pay instead. Families paying privately get a written quote from us after the assessment. More on the council side is on our Barnet home care page.

Hendon FAQs

Questions families ask us about Hendon. If yours is not here, ask us directly.

Ask a question
We keep Shabbat. Can a carer work around it?

Yes. Tell us at the assessment what the household does on Shabbat and festivals, including lights, cooking and the kitchen, and we write it into the care plan so every carer follows the same routine.

Mum has a new flat at Hendon Waterside with no spare room. What can you offer?

Visiting care, if we can staff it, or a respite arrangement around a family member who stays with her. Live-in care needs a bedroom for the carer, so it is unlikely to work in that flat.

Is West Hendon part of Barnet or Brent?

West Hendon is in Barnet, so the council route is Barnet's Social Care Direct. The Welsh Harp itself straddles the Barnet and Brent boundary, and homes on the Brent side go to Brent Council for adult social care.

Can a carer take Dad to the Age UK day sessions?

Helping him get ready and out of the door in time is a normal part of a morning visit. If you want a carer to go with him, we agree that in the care plan.

Do you cover Brent Cross and Hendon Central?

Yes, both are within our Hendon area. Parts of Hendon near the stations and town centre are inside controlled parking zones. If yours is, a Carer's Parking Permit from Barnet Council helps if a carer drives.
