Live-in Care in Lee

Yes, we provide live-in care in Lee, SE12, for one person or for a couple, from the Victorian streets near Manor House Gardens down to the interwar houses towards Grove Park. After a free home assessment with Jackie and a written care plan, a carer takes the spare bedroom and helps the household with daily life.

When one of you is in hospital and the other is at home

For a couple in Lee, live-in care can start at a hard moment: one partner is on a ward at University Hospital Lewisham, or at the Queen Elizabeth in Woolwich for some people on the eastern side, and the one at home is struggling alone. A live-in carer can move in before the discharge date and help the partner at home, with meals, shopping, getting to visiting hours, so that when the patient comes back, the house is ready and someone already knows the routine.

After discharge, the same carer gives the personal care the returning partner now needs while keeping an eye on the other. If the returning partner qualifies for Lewisham's short-term enablement service, it runs alongside the live-in carer for the first weeks. Our hospital discharge page has more.

Who does what for a couple

Before the carer arrives, we write down which partner needs which help. A typical Lee plan might give one partner full help with washing, dressing and the stairs, and the other help only with cooking, cleaning and lifts to appointments. Two things to know:

  • One carer can support a couple only while one partner's needs are light. If both need two-person transfers, or care through most nights, a single live-in carer is not enough.
  • Each partner may be assessed separately by the council, and each may contribute separately. Our Lewisham live-in care page explains the council route and direct payments.

Which room does the carer take?

In Lee the question is usually which bedroom, not whether there is one. In the Victorian and Edwardian houses off Lee High Road the second bedroom is normally a decent size. In the interwar semis towards Grove Park the spare room is often the small box room over the hall, which is enough for a carer if it takes a single bed, a rail for clothes and a door that closes. For a couple, what matters more is that the carer's room is not the only route to the bathroom, and that the couple's own room has floor space either side of the bed if a hoist may be needed later.

How do live-in carer changeovers work in Lee?

Lee station, on Burnt Ash Road, is on Southeastern's Sidcup line, running into Charing Cross one way and out to Dartford the other. National Rail lists some step-free access to both platforms but no lifts, so a carer with a heavy case should check the station's accessibility details before the first changeover. Hither Green, a short bus ride away, has more frequent trains. Our SE13 office is 10 to 15 minutes away, so Jackie can call in for reviews without fuss.

Parking is easy by Lewisham standards. The council's zone timetable shows the Lee, Lee Green and Manor House zones enforced for just two hours, 10am to noon on weekdays. Outside that window, a family car bringing the new carer can use a residents' bay without a permit, which makes an afternoon changeover simple.

Towards Grove Park, the hours change. Streets in the Grove Park zone at the southern end of SE12 are enforced 9am to 5.30pm on weekdays, not just the two-hour morning slot, so a car changeover there needs a visitor permit. Addresses east of Lee Green may be in Greenwich, which runs its own parking and its own care assessments.

Manor House: library, lake and café

The carer's daily break, and many outings with the person, can happen in one place. Manor House community library on Old Road occupies the 18th-century Manor House itself and is open Monday to Saturday. Behind it, Manor House Gardens has a lake, a café, a walled flower garden and an ice-house, plus toilets with disabled facilities that open only Thursday to Saturday, 11am to 4pm. For a couple, a walk round the lake with the carer and a cup of tea at the café can be the outing of the week.

Funding the arrangement

We give a written quote after the free assessment, never a figure over the phone. Council funding, direct payments and NHS Continuing Healthcare are all possible routes, depending on needs and means. Lee live-in care: your questions

Questions families ask us about Lee. If yours is not here, ask us directly.

Ask a question
My husband is in Lewisham Hospital. Can a carer move in before he comes home?

Yes, if you are arranging the care privately. The carer can help you in the meantime and be settled in when he is discharged. Tell the ward you are planning live-in care so they can include it in the discharge plan.

Mum would rather sleep downstairs than have a stairlift. Can the front room work?

Often. It needs space for the bed and, if she uses one, a commode, and a plan for washing if the bathroom is upstairs. The carer keeps their own bedroom upstairs.

Would a carer have to pay to park outside our house in Lee?

Only between 10am and noon on weekdays in the Lee, Lee Green and Manor House zones. Most live-in carers arrive by train and do not bring a car.

Dad goes into hospital for planned surgery soon, and Mum can't manage alone. Can a carer stay with her while he is away?

Yes, a live-in stay can be arranged around a planned admission, and it can carry on when he comes home if he needs help too. Tell us the admission date as early as you can so we can say honestly whether we can cover it.
