Live-in Care in Plumstead
We arrange live-in care in Plumstead, SE18, wherever the home has a spare bedroom for the carer. On Plumstead's steep streets, having someone living in means help on the stairs, at the front door and on the slope outside, at any hour. Jackie assesses at home first, free of charge.
Will live-in care work in a steep Plumstead terrace?
It can, and the hill is one of the strongest reasons to choose it here. Visiting carers come and go, and a fall on a steep staircase is at its most dangerous when nobody else is in: on the way to the toilet at night, or going down to answer the door. With a live-in carer, someone is in the house for those moments.
Before we agree a start, the assessment covers three things in a Plumstead house:
- The staircase. Victorian stairs here are often steep, and some turn. A straight flight usually takes a standard stairlift; a turning one needs a curved lift, which takes longer to arrange. Rails on both sides are a quick improvement either way. Ask Royal Greenwich for an occupational therapy assessment that covers both.
- The front steps. Many houses sit above or below the pavement. If a wheelchair cannot get out of the door, the carer can do the shopping, but the person stays in. We would sooner find a solution, such as a rail, a ramp or a different door, so they can still get out.
- The carer's room. The houses near Plumstead Common usually have a spare bedroom. The small two-up two-downs nearer the High Street often do not. A box room is enough if it takes a single bed.
Without a spare room, a live-in carer cannot stay. In that case we look at visiting care in Plumstead, timed around the hardest parts of the day.
Changeovers at Plumstead station
Plumstead station is on the Southeastern North Kent line. Woolwich Arsenal, with the DLR and the Elizabeth line, and Abbey Wood are each a short bus ride away, so a carer can arrive from almost anywhere in London without a car. For a carer who drives, the zones differ a lot. Plumstead Station (PL) operates for only an hour and a half, 9:30am to 11am on weekdays, according to the council's Plumstead Station zone page. Plumstead Central (PC) runs Monday to Saturday, 9am to 5:30pm. Check which zone the street is in before the first changeover, and plan an afternoon handover in the PL zone.
Nepali families, Gurkha veterans and couples
Plumstead and Woolwich are home to one of London's largest Nepalese communities, many with Gurkha connections through the area's military history. Live-in care can support a couple where one partner needs a lot of help. It can also fit around a household with several generations under one roof, provided the carer has a room of their own.
Tell us at the assessment about language, diet, prayer and festivals, and about who in the family should be kept informed. We put them in the care plan. We cannot promise a carer who speaks a particular language, but we will be honest about what we can arrange.
The Plumstead Centre. The refurbished, Grade II listed former library at 232 Plumstead High Street is now a library, leisure centre and café with community rooms. It is on the flat part of town, so it makes a manageable outing for someone with a frame or wheelchair. See the council's Plumstead Centre page.
The daily break, and getting out
The live-in carer takes a protected break each day. Plumstead Common and Winns Common are close to most houses on the hill, and the High Street and the Plumstead Centre are at the bottom of it. When the carer is with your relative, the same places work as outings: down to the High Street for an hour, a seat on the common in summer, or a lift to a temple, church or community event that matters to them.
Home after Queen Elizabeth Hospital
Queen Elizabeth Hospital is between Woolwich and Shooters Hill, close to Plumstead. Coming home to a steep terraced house is the hard part of a discharge. In the first days, someone needs to be there for the stairs, the toilet at night and new medication. If the ward is talking about a care home and the family wants care at home, say so to the discharge team and call us. See hospital discharge support.
Paying for it
After the free assessment you get a written quote. Royal Greenwich may contribute after a needs and financial assessment, and the full route is on our Greenwich live-in care page. Where the need is primarily a health need, look into NHS Continuing Healthcare. For the wider picture, see live-in care in London.

Plumstead live-in care: what families ask
Questions families ask us about Plumstead. If yours is not here, ask us directly.
Ask a questionThe stairs in Dad's house turn halfway up. Can a live-in carer still help him to bed?
Yes, by staying with him on the stairs, as long as he can still climb them safely with help. If he cannot, the options are a curved stairlift or a bed downstairs. We look at the stairs with you and involve the council's occupational therapists.
Our house in Plumstead has three generations living in it. Is there room for a carer?
Only if a bedroom can be set aside for the carer alone. Sharing a room with a family member does not work for weeks at a time. If no room is free, visiting care can cover the times the family is out at work.
Mum eats only Nepali food. Will the carer cook it?
The carer cooks what she eats, following the family's guidance and recipes. We record it in her care plan so each new carer at changeover knows too.
Which parking zone affects a carer near Plumstead station?
The Plumstead Station zone runs for 90 minutes on weekday mornings only. Plumstead Central covers more hours and Saturdays. The council can confirm which zone a street is in.
Do you cover Plumstead Common and the roads towards Shooters Hill?
Yes. Live-in care does not depend on distance from our Lewisham office, so every part of Plumstead is covered in the same way.
