Live-in Care in Silvertown
A carer who lives with your parent in their riverside flat or North Woolwich terrace, with their own room, a daily break by the Thames and a planned handover when the rota changes.
Yes, we provide live-in care in Silvertown and North Woolwich. Jackie, our registered manager, or one of our small team comes to the home for a free assessment, checks the room the carer would sleep in, and writes a care plan with you. A trained carer then moves in to support one person or a couple through the day and evening, and we plan their breaks and their replacement in advance.
Which Silvertown homes have room for a live-in carer?
- West Silvertown, Royal Wharf and the blocks around Pontoon Dock. Almost all modern flats. A two-bedroom flat usually works, but in some newer schemes the second room is sold as a study and barely takes a single bed.
- North Woolwich, past King George V. Older terraces and council blocks. A box room can work if a bed and some storage fit.
The carer needs a bedroom of their own with a door that closes; a sofa bed in the living room will not do. In a one-bedroom flat, the honest options are visiting care in Silvertown, a move to a larger flat, or Newham's extra care housing, which the council allocates after a needs assessment.
Lifts, stairs and equipment
The riverside blocks suit live-in care: level floors and lifts let a wheelchair or mobile hoist move about. The risk is the lift itself. If your parent lives several floors up, ask the managing agent whether there is a second lift and how repairs are handled.
A North Woolwich terrace raises different questions: whether the staircase is straight enough for a stairlift, and whether a bed could go downstairs for a while. Council occupational therapists assess for equipment, which should be in place before the carer starts. If a transfer needs two people, one live-in carer cannot do it alone, and we will plan extra help.
Changeover day: getting carers in and out of E16
At each changeover, the incoming and outgoing carers hand over at the home, usually with a suitcase each. The DLR stations from West Silvertown to King George V are all step-free. The 129 bus runs from Lewisham through the Silvertown Tunnel to Pontoon Dock and London City Airport, so a carer travelling from south-east London can arrive without changing.
A carer who drives is a different matter. The Royal Docks East and West parking zones apply every day of the week, 8am to 6.30pm, so a Sunday handover is not free parking. The resident can buy Visitor parking permits on MiPermit. They are virtual and can be booked up to seven days ahead, but the household must register for Visitor Permit Access first, so do it before the first changeover. New developments often have their own parking rules, so ask the building too.
The carer's daily break, by the river
A live-in carer needs time off each day and a proper night's sleep, both written into the care plan. The Royal Docks' guide to local green spaces lists the ones within walking distance:
- Lyle Park on Bradfield Road, by West Silvertown DLR, a small riverside park with tennis courts and Thames views.
- Thames Barrier Park on North Woolwich Road, with its clipped hedge gardens and the With Milk café.
- Royal Victoria Gardens on Pier Road, North Woolwich, opened in 1890.
- North Woolwich Library at 5 Pier Parade, for a quiet hour indoors.
The same places suit the person being cared for. A coffee at Thames Barrier Park or a bench in Royal Victoria Gardens can be part of the routine. While the carer is off, family, a sit-in carer or a regular group can cover.
Coming home from Newham University Hospital. Silvertown residents are usually treated at Newham University Hospital on Glen Road, Plaistow. A lift-served flat makes discharge home simpler, and a live-in carer means someone is there from the first evening, when gaps in a discharge plan tend to show. Tell the ward you are arranging live-in care so the Integrated Discharge Hub can plan around it (the council's help leaving hospital page explains the process), then call us with the expected date. See also our hospital discharge support.
A couple downsizing to the river
Some couples moved into Silvertown flats from a larger house. If one partner now needs care, a live-in carer can support one fully and help the other with meals and appointments. With a carer living in, a two-bedroom flat works only if the couple share a bedroom.
Paying for live-in care
We give a written quote after the free assessment, and we do not quote figures over the phone. Newham Council's needs and financial assessments, and how direct payments work, are on our Newham live-in care page. If the needs are mainly health needs, ask the GP or the ward about NHS Continuing Healthcare, which can fund the whole package. Our London live-in care page explains the day-to-day.

Live-in care in Silvertown: what families ask
Questions families ask us about Silvertown. If yours is not here, ask us directly.
Ask a questionMum has a one-bedroom flat at Royal Wharf. Is there any way to make live-in care work?
Not in a one-bedroom flat, because the carer needs a bedroom of their own. Visiting care is the alternative while she stays there. If the family is considering a move to a two-bedroom flat, talk to us before signing.
The handover is on a Sunday. Does the incoming carer need a parking permit?
Only if they drive. The Royal Docks zones are enforced on Sundays, 8am to 6.30pm, so a driving carer needs a visitor permit from the household's MiPermit account or a space in the building's own car park. Carers who come by DLR or the 129 bus need nothing.
Dad's flat is on the eighth floor. What happens when the lift breaks down?
The carer stays with him, keeps him fed and on his medication, and rearranges appointments. If the outage runs on, we will talk to you and the managing agent.
My aunt lives in an old terrace in North Woolwich with a steep staircase. Is live-in care still possible?
Often it is, if there is a spare bedroom. If the stairs are no longer safe, we may suggest a council occupational therapy assessment for a stairlift, or moving her bed downstairs, before the carer starts.
