Care and Support Worker Jobs in Hillingdon
One of our three supported living homes is in Uxbridge, so for Hillingdon residents a support worker role there is a local job. Live-in roles are open too, anywhere in London. Visiting care is harder, because our office is in Lewisham.
Supported living in Uxbridge: a job inside your own borough
Our Uxbridge home is a supported living house in a quiet residential area of the town. Support workers there help the adults who live in the house run their own lives. That might mean cooking a meal they chose, budgeting for the shopping, or catching a bus alone for the first time. The aim is independence, so a good shift often means doing less for the person than you could.
The commute depends on your end of the borough, which stretches from Harefield down to Heathrow, and north-south links are weaker than the map suggests.
- Hillingdon, Ickenham, Cowley, Yiewsley and West Drayton: typically 10 to 25 minutes by car or bus.
- Ruislip, Ruislip Manor and Eastcote: on the Metropolitan and Piccadilly lines, which both end at Uxbridge. Allow 20 to 30 minutes door to door.
- Hayes, Hayes End and Yeading: around 20 to 30 minutes, by car or on buses along the Uxbridge Road.
- Northwood, Northwood Hills and Harefield: 30 to 40 minutes. Northwood's Metropolitan line trains don't run to Uxbridge, and Harefield has no station, so driving is easiest.
You can read about the house on our Uxbridge home page, and about how supported living works on our supported living page.
Live-in carer roles across London
A live-in carer moves into the client's home, has a bedroom of their own, and supports one person or a couple through the day. Breaks and time off are built in. Your own postcode doesn't matter: we place live-in carers anywhere in London, including Hillingdon when we have a client here.
If you are placed locally, expect a lot of 1930s semis and detached houses in Ruislip, Eastcote, Ickenham and Northwood. They usually have a spare bedroom, but the stairs are often the problem, so you may be working around a stairlift or a bed moved downstairs. Our live-in care page describes the role from the family's side.
Visiting care work: why it's hard from Hillingdon
Our visiting care is run from our office on Lewisham High Street, SE13. From Hayes and Harlington, the Elizabeth line to Canary Wharf and the DLR to Lewisham take roughly 60 to 70 minutes door to door. From Uxbridge, Ruislip or Northwood it's 90 minutes or more each way.
Visiting rounds inside Hillingdon depend on whether we have clients here, so we can't promise them. Ask, and we will tell you honestly what is near you.
This page lists no pay rates, vacancies or shift patterns. They depend on the role and on what is open when you apply. Ask us and we will tell you.
What the work involves
- Personal care: washing, dressing, continence
- Medication support, recorded every time
- Teaching skills such as cooking and budgeting
- Moving and handling, sometimes with a hoist
- Going out together: shops, clubs, appointments
- Writing clear notes for colleagues and families
Live-in clients may have dementia, a physical disability or sensory loss, or be nearing the end of life.
Can I get a care job in Hillingdon with no experience?
Yes, you can apply without a care qualification. New care workers complete the Care Certificate, the Skills for Care standards covering safeguarding, dignity, infection control, communication and person-centred care. CQC-registered providers must also make sure staff receive training in learning disability and autism, to the standards in the government's Oliver McGowan code of practice. Tell us about any time spent caring for a relative or volunteering.
The checks we have to make
The law requires us to complete three checks before you work with anyone:
- An enhanced DBS check, including the adults' barred list, through the Disclosure and Barring Service.
- Right to work in the UK, checked under the government's rules. If your visa limits your hours, we have to stay within the limit.
- References, including your most recent employer and any earlier care employer.

Questions from Hillingdon applicants
Questions families ask us about Hillingdon. If yours is not here, ask us directly.
Ask a questionI'm a student at Brunel in Uxbridge. Could I work at the Uxbridge home?
Possibly. Brunel University London's campus is in Uxbridge. Send us your timetable. If you are on a Student visa, your work hours in term time are capped by the visa rules, and we have to check the cap and keep to it.
I work shifts at Heathrow. Can I do care work alongside?
Tell us your rota and we can see whether anything fits. Live-in work is hard to combine with a second job; supported living shifts are more likely to fit.
I live in Harefield and don't drive. Is Uxbridge realistic?
There are buses from Harefield to Uxbridge, but with no station in the village, early starts and late finishes can be awkward. A live-in role avoids the daily journey altogether.
Is there an office in Hillingdon where I can be interviewed?
No. Our only office is in Lewisham. We usually start with a phone call, and we'll agree any face-to-face meeting with you.
I already look after a relative in Hillingdon. Can I still apply?
Yes, if the hours work for both of you. You can also ask Hillingdon Council for a carer's assessment, and Carers Trust Hillingdon on Uxbridge High Street gives carers free advice. The council's carers information page explains both.
