Care Jobs in Harrow: Live-in and Support Worker Roles

If you live in Harrow, you can work with us as a support worker at our Uxbridge supported living home, a short Metropolitan line ride away, or as a live-in carer anywhere in London. Visiting care is harder to offer you, because our only office is in Lewisham and most of our visiting work is near it.

Which care jobs can I do from Harrow?

We have three kinds of role, and a Harrow address suits two of them well.

  • Supported living support worker, at one of our homes in Uxbridge, Whitton or Kingston upon Thames. Uxbridge is the obvious one from Harrow.
  • Live-in carer. You move in with the client, so your home postcode doesn't matter.
  • Visiting carer. Realistic only if you can get to south-east London regularly.

Support worker in Uxbridge: the commute from your part of Harrow

A commute has to work at both ends of the working day, not just at midday. The south-west of the borough has it easiest: from Rayners Lane an Uxbridge train takes about a quarter of an hour, and because both the Metropolitan and Piccadilly lines run there, a problem on one line is less likely to strand you. South Harrow has the Piccadilly line direct, at around 20 minutes. From Pinner or North Harrow you change at Harrow-on-the-Hill. Hatch End is on the Lioness line, and Wealdstone, Kenton, Harrow Weald and Stanmore have no direct line west at all, so from those areas the job makes most sense if you drive, which is roughly 20 to 30 minutes from central Harrow. Tell us your nearest station when you apply and we can talk through what the journey would look like.

Support workers help adults run their own lives: cooking, budgeting, getting to appointments, going out. The homes are described on our supported living page.

Live-in carer roles

A live-in carer stays in the client's home, has their own bedroom and supports one person or a couple day to day. You could be placed in any part of London, and when we have a client in Harrow, it may be close to where you live. Many Harrow homes are interwar semis, so expect stairlifts or a bed moved downstairs. Breaks and time off are part of the arrangement. Our live-in care page shows the role from the family's side.

Visiting care work: an honest answer

Visiting carers see several clients a day, and most of our visiting clients are near our office at Tower House on Lewisham High Street, SE13. From central Harrow the quickest route is a fast Metropolitan train to Baker Street, the Jubilee line to London Bridge and a train to Lewisham. That's roughly 60 to 70 minutes each way. From Stanmore or Canons Park, the Jubilee line goes straight to London Bridge, but the journey is still over an hour.

We can't promise visiting work inside Harrow, because it depends on whether we have clients there. If that's what you want, say so and we'll tell you straight whether anything is near you.

A typical day's work

  • Help with washing, dressing and continence
  • Prompting or giving medication, and recording it
  • Cooking food the person likes, in the way they like it
  • Safe moving and handling, sometimes with a hoist
  • Getting out: shops, appointments, worship, the park
  • Clear care notes for colleagues and family

Clients may be living with dementia, a physical disability or sensory loss, or be nearing the end of life. In supported living, many have a learning disability. If you know vegetarian Gujarati cooking, kosher kitchen rules or another food or faith tradition well, tell us. It can help a client settle.

Starting without a qualification

You don't need a care qualification to apply. New care workers work through the Care Certificate standards set by Skills for Care, covering safeguarding, dignity, infection control and person-centred care. CQC-registered providers must also train staff in learning disability and autism, which matters most in supported living. Mention any time spent caring for a relative or volunteering.

Checks we must complete by law

Before you work with anyone, a CQC-registered provider has to carry out:

  1. An enhanced DBS check with the adults' barred list, through the Disclosure and Barring Service.
  2. A right to work check under the government's right to work rules. If your visa limits your hours, we have to keep within them.
  3. References, including your most recent employer and any previous care employer.

You won't find pay rates, vacancies or shift patterns on this page. They depend on the role and what is open at the time. Ask when you get in touch and we'll give you a straight answer.

Harrow FAQs

Questions from Harrow applicants

Questions families ask us about Harrow. If yours is not here, ask us directly.

Ask a question
I study at the University of Westminster's Harrow campus. Can I work part-time?

Tell us your timetable and we'll see whether anything fits. On a student visa, your term-time hours are limited, and we must check and keep to that limit.

I speak Gujarati and Hindi. Is that useful?

It can be. Some clients are much more at ease with a carer who speaks their language. Harrow Council seeks Gujarati and Hindi speakers for its Shared Lives scheme for the same reason. List every language you speak, though we can't promise it decides where you're placed.

I live in Stanmore. Is Uxbridge a sensible commute?

By car, usually yes. Without a car it's slower, because the Jubilee line doesn't connect directly with the Uxbridge branch. A live-in role may suit you better.

Can I be interviewed somewhere in Harrow?

We have no office in Harrow. We usually start with a phone call, and any face-to-face meeting takes place at our Lewisham office.

I care for my mum at home in Harrow. Can I still work for you?

Possibly, as long as the hours work for both of you. Tell us what you can manage. You're also entitled to a carer's assessment from Harrow Council, which may help with support for your mum while you work. See the council's unpaid carers page.
