Care Jobs in Lewisham

If you live in Lewisham, you can apply to us for visiting care work, live-in placements anywhere in London, or support worker roles at our supported living homes. Our only office is on Lewisham High Street, so visiting care is more realistic from here than from almost anywhere else in London.

Working close to home

Our office is at Tower House, 67-71 Lewisham High Street, SE13, within walking distance of Lewisham station and the DLR. Even so, whether we have clients near your street depends on who we support at the time, so tell us how far you can travel and we will give you a straight answer.

Getting round the borough between visits

Lewisham has no Tube, so carers without a car rely on buses and rail. Roughly, from Lewisham town centre:

  • Ladywell, Hither Green, Lee and Catford are 5 to 15 minutes by bus or Southeastern train.
  • Brockley, Deptford and New Cross are 10 to 20 minutes. The DLR runs from Lewisham to Deptford Bridge, and the Overground Windrush line links New Cross Gate, Brockley, Honor Oak Park, Forest Hill and Sydenham.
  • Forest Hill, Sydenham and Downham are 20 to 35 minutes. Downham has no station of its own, so it is buses or a walk from Grove Park, Beckenham Hill or Bellingham.

Driving is not always faster: the South Circular through Catford can make a two-mile trip slow.

Parking in Lewisham. The borough has over 30 controlled parking zones. Central zones such as Rushey Green run all day; many residential ones, in Lee or Hither Green East, only operate 10am to 12 noon on weekdays. Some clients hold a council carers' parking permit. It belongs to the resident, not to you: they activate it as an e-permit when you arrive, it covers up to four hours a day, and it does not guarantee a space.

What Lewisham homes are like to work in

  • The Corbett Estate in Hither Green and the long terraces of Catford and Ladywell often have one straight, steep staircase and a bathroom upstairs, so stairlifts, commodes and careful moving and handling are part of the job.
  • Brockley and Forest Hill have large Victorian houses split into flats, many with narrow shared stairs and no lift.
  • Deptford and New Cross have post-war estates and tower blocks, where a broken lift changes your whole visit.
  • Downham and Bellingham are interwar cottage estates with gardens and more ground-floor space for equipment.

The work itself: washing, dressing and toileting, prompting medication and keeping records, safe moving and handling, cooking, shopping, light housework, company, and reporting changes in someone's health. Clients may live with dementia, a physical disability or a sensory impairment; some are home from University Hospital Lewisham or near the end of life.

Live-in work anywhere in London

A live-in carer moves into the client's home for a set period, with their own bedroom. Placements can be in any London borough, so living in Lewisham neither helps nor hinders. You are entitled to proper breaks and time off, and we arrange cover. Our live-in care page shows the role from the family's side.

Supported living roles: across London from here

Our supported living homes are in Kingston upon Thames, Whitton and Uxbridge, where support workers help adults cook, manage money, get out and build confidence. From Lewisham, Kingston is the nearest: roughly 50 to 70 minutes by car on the A205, or 1 hour 15 minutes to 1 hour 30 minutes by train via London Bridge or Waterloo East and Waterloo. Whitton is similar, Uxbridge up to two hours. That is a heavy regular commute.

Checks we must complete, and training for new carers

As a CQC-registered provider, we are legally required to complete:

  1. An enhanced DBS check with the adults' barred list, through the Disclosure and Barring Service. If you are on the DBS Update Service, tell us, because with your consent we can check your certificate's status online.
  2. A right to work check, following the government's right to work rules, which also records any limit on your hours.
  3. References, including your most recent employer and any previous care work.

If you are new to care, you will work through the Care Certificate standards from Skills for Care before working alone. They cover safeguarding, dignity, communication and infection control.

How much do care jobs in Lewisham pay?

We don't publish pay on this page because it depends on the role. Ask us when you get in touch and we will tell you plainly.

Lewisham FAQs

Questions from Lewisham applicants

Questions families ask us about Lewisham. If yours is not here, ask us directly.

Ask a question
Can I drop my CV in at the office on Lewisham High Street?

Call or WhatsApp first. We are a small team and often out with clients, so we will arrange a time to meet you.

I'm a student at Goldsmiths in New Cross. Can I work part-time?

You can apply. A student visa limits the hours you can work in term time, and our right to work check records that. Tell us the hours you can actually do.

I already work at Lewisham Hospital. Do I need a new DBS check?

We have to carry out our own checks. If your current certificate is on the DBS Update Service and covers adult work, we may be able to use it; otherwise we will apply for a new one.

Will I get a parking permit for visits around Catford?

Not one of your own. Lewisham's carers' permit is applied for by the resident with a medical letter, so some clients have one and some don't. If you drive, tell us and we will plan with parking in mind.
