Care Jobs for Southwark Residents
If you live in Southwark, you can apply to us for visiting care work, live-in work anywhere in London, or support work at our supported living homes. Southwark borders Lewisham, where our only office is, so visiting work is a realistic option from most of the borough, depending on which clients we have when you apply.
How far is our office from your part of Southwark?
Our office is on Lewisham High Street, SE13, just past Southwark's eastern edge. Here are rough public transport times from each part of the borough:
- Nunhead and Peckham (SE15): 10 to 20 minutes by Southeastern train via Nunhead, or on the 436 bus. Nunhead is about five minutes from Lewisham by train.
- Bermondsey and Borough (SE1, SE16): 10 to 20 minutes from London Bridge on Southeastern.
- Camberwell and Denmark Hill (SE5): 15 to 25 minutes.
- Rotherhithe and Canada Water (SE16): 20 to 30 minutes on the Jubilee line to London Bridge, then a train.
- East Dulwich and Dulwich Village (SE22, SE21): 25 to 35 minutes, the furthest part of the borough from us.
Visiting clients aren't spread evenly, so tell us your postcode and the hours you can work, and we'll say honestly what's near you.
Getting between visits in Southwark
North Southwark has the Jubilee, Northern and Bakerloo lines, and the south has no Tube. Camberwell has no station at all, so carers there rely on buses along Camberwell Road and Denmark Hill. Peckham, Nunhead and the Dulwiches have Southeastern, Southern, Thameslink and Overground trains.
Driving is harder than it looks. Most residential streets are in controlled parking zones, and council estates run their own permit schemes. Southwark gives home care worker permits only to care companies on its approved or contracted list, never to individual workers, and those permits don't cover housing estates. Borough and Bankside are also inside the Congestion Charge zone.
What Southwark homes are like to work in
Southwark has more social housing than almost anywhere in England, so a lot of your visits would be to council flats and maisonettes on large post-war estates. Some, like the Aylesbury in Walworth, are deck-access blocks with long walkways, where a broken lift makes a visit much harder.
In East Dulwich, Nunhead and much of Peckham, Victorian terraces are mostly split into upstairs and downstairs flats. They have steep stairs and narrow bathrooms, so moving and handling needs care. The larger family houses in Dulwich Village and West Dulwich are where live-in placements are most likely, because they have a spare bedroom.
Live-in work wherever you live
A live-in carer moves into the client's home, with their own bedroom, and supports one person or a couple. Breaks and time off are part of the arrangement. Because you live where you work, your own postcode doesn't matter. Our live-in care page explains the role from the family's side.
Support work at our homes in Kingston, Whitton and Uxbridge
Our supported living homes help adults run their own lives. From Southwark they're a long commute. To get to Kingston, take the Overground from Peckham Rye or Denmark Hill to Clapham Junction, then a South Western Railway train. From the north of the borough, go via Waterloo. Allow 50 to 70 minutes. Whitton is similar, and Uxbridge is 75 to 90 minutes away. Only ask about Uxbridge if you drive or are moving west.
What the job involves
- Washing, dressing and continence care
- Medication support, recorded every time
- Meals, light housework and shopping
- Moving and handling, sometimes with a hoist
- Company, walks and trips to appointments
- Clear notes for colleagues and families
We support people living with dementia, physical disabilities or sensory loss, and some at the end of life. In Southwark that can mean helping someone settle back home after a stay at King's College Hospital or St Thomas', or picking up when the council's short-term reablement support ends.
Do I need experience to become a carer in Southwark?
No. You can apply without a care qualification. New care workers complete the Care Certificate, the Skills for Care standards that cover safeguarding, dignity, infection control and person-centred care. Tell us if you've cared for a relative.
Checks we have to carry out
- An enhanced DBS check with the adults' barred list, through the Disclosure and Barring Service.
- Your right to work in the UK, checked under the government's rules. If your visa limits your hours, we must keep to that limit.
- References, including your most recent employer and any earlier care employer.
We don't list pay rates, vacancies or shift patterns here. They depend on the role and on what's open when you contact us. Ask, and we'll give you a straight answer.

Questions from Southwark applicants
Questions families ask us about Southwark. If yours is not here, ask us directly.
Ask a questionI live in Camberwell, which has no station. Is visiting work practical?
Often, yes. Buses along Denmark Hill and Camberwell Road link to Peckham, and Denmark Hill station is at the southern end of Camberwell. Tell us if you'd rather work near home or travel towards Lewisham.
Will you give me a Southwark parking permit for visits?
Don't count on one. Southwark issues home care worker permits only to companies on its approved list, not to individual carers, and they aren't valid on estates. Talk to us before taking on a round that depends on a car.
Can I be interviewed somewhere in Peckham?
Our only office is on Lewisham High Street, and Lewisham station is one stop from Nunhead by train. We usually start with a phone call and then agree where to meet.
I already look after my mum in Walworth. Can I still apply?
Yes, if the hours work for you both. You're also entitled to a free carer's assessment from Southwark Council, which you can request online or through the OPPD team on 020 7525 3324.
