Care Jobs for Newham Residents
Yes, you can work for us if you live in Newham. Live-in carer roles are open to anyone in London. Visiting care work is mostly in south-east London, which is a short trip from Canning Town, Custom House or Silvertown but a long one from Forest Gate or Manor Park. Support worker roles are at our homes in Whitton, Kingston and Uxbridge, and each is well over an hour away.
Visiting care work: which side of Newham you live on matters
Our only office is in Lewisham, at Tower House, 67-71 Lewisham High Street, and our visiting work is mainly in south-east London. We have no office in Newham and can't promise visiting work there. The south of Newham, though, is one of the quickest places north of the river to reach it from.
- Custom House: the Elizabeth line goes one stop under the Thames to Woolwich.
- Silvertown and North Woolwich: the DLR runs through King George V to Woolwich Arsenal.
- Canning Town and West Ham: take the Jubilee line to Canary Wharf, then the DLR to Lewisham. That takes roughly 25 to 40 minutes.
- Plaistow, Upton Park and East Ham: allow 40 to 50 minutes.
- Forest Gate and Manor Park: allow 45 to 55 minutes, usually via Stratford.
Driving rarely helps: the Blackwall and Silvertown tunnels both charge a toll, and all of Newham is inside the ULEZ. Tell us your nearest station and we'll say honestly whether a visiting round could work.
What a carer does in someone's home
- Washing, dressing and help with the toilet, done privately and with dignity
- Prompting medication and recording it properly
- Cooking food the person enjoys, the way they like it
- Safe moving and handling, sometimes with a hoist
- Company, conversation and trips out
- Clear notes, so the next person on shift knows what happened
Some of the people we support live with dementia, a physical disability or sight or hearing loss, and some are receiving end-of-life care.
Live-in carer: your Newham address doesn't matter
A live-in carer moves into the client's home, has their own bedroom, and supports them through the day with personal care, meals, medication, housework and company. Because you live where the work is, a placement in Bromley or Barnet is as open to someone from Beckton as to anyone. You are entitled to proper breaks and time off, and we arrange cover for them. Our live-in care page explains how it works for the family.
Support worker roles at our three homes
Our supported living homes are all in west and south-west London, so from Newham each one is a real commute. Which station you live near makes the difference. From Forest Gate or Manor Park, the Elizabeth line runs west towards Hayes & Harlington or West Drayton, then a bus to Uxbridge. From Stratford, the Overground Mildmay line goes to Richmond with no change, and a short South Western Railway hop reaches Whitton. From West Ham or Canning Town, the Jubilee line to Waterloo connects with trains to Kingston. Allow 75 to 90 minutes or more each way for any of them.
Check the journey at the hours you'd really travel. The work is helping adults run their own lives: cooking, budgeting, appointments and confidence. See our supported living page.
Do you need experience to get a care job in Newham?
Experience helps, but if you have cared for a relative, volunteered, or done work that needed patience and reliability, tell us. People new to care are trained to the Care Certificate standards set by Skills for Care. The Health and Care Act 2022 also requires registered providers to train staff in learning disability and autism, which matters most at our supported living homes.
Three checks the law requires before you start
- An enhanced DBS check that includes the adults' barred list, carried out through the Disclosure and Barring Service.
- Your right to work in the UK, which we must check before your first shift under the government's right to work rules. If your visa limits the hours you can work, we have to stay within that limit.
- References, including your most recent employer and any previous care employer.
How much do care jobs pay in Newham?
We don't publish pay on this page, because it depends on the role. Ask when you get in touch and we'll give you a straight answer.

Newham applicants ask
Questions families ask us about Newham. If yours is not here, ask us directly.
Ask a questionI live in Custom House. Is that close enough for visiting work?
It's one of the best places in Newham to start from. The Elizabeth line takes you under the river to Woolwich in one stop, and Woolwich is in south-east London. Whether there's a round for you depends on where our clients are at the time.
I'm in Manor Park. Should I only look at live-in work?
Not necessarily, but live-in work is the role where distance matters least. Manor Park is on the Elizabeth line, which also gives you one of the more direct routes west towards our Uxbridge home.
Can I drive to visits through the Blackwall or Silvertown tunnel?
You can, but both tunnels charge a toll, and that adds up over a working week. Ask us whether a public transport route would work first.
Where would my interview be?
We usually start with a phone call. If we meet in person, it's at our Lewisham office. From most of Newham, take the Jubilee line to Canary Wharf and the DLR to Lewisham.
Would I ever care for someone in Newham?
It's possible. Live-in placements can be anywhere in London, and we do cover Newham. We have no base in the borough, though, so we can't promise you local work.
