Home Care in Chingford
Live-in care, respite and home care for older people in Chingford, from Station Road and Chingford Green to King's Head Hill, Chingford Hatch and South Chingford.
Yes, we provide care at home in Chingford, and for most families here live-in care is the option we can promise with confidence. Chingford is at the far end of the borough from our Lewisham office, so regular visits depend on whether we have a carer who can reach you; we check before agreeing. Every arrangement starts with a free assessment at home and a written care plan.
What we mean by Chingford
Chingford is the northern tip of Waltham Forest, where the Weaver line ends and Epping Forest begins. The old centre is Chingford Green and Station Road, where the King's Head dates back to at least the 1730s. Beyond the station, Chingford Plain runs up to Queen Elizabeth's Hunting Lodge, built in 1543 for Henry VIII to watch the hunt. Pole Hill, the highest point, carries an 1824 obelisk that once marked true north for the Royal Observatory.
South and east of the centre are Chingford Hatch, Larkswood and South Chingford, and the Chingford Hall estate in the south, one of the four estates the Waltham Forest Housing Action Trust rebuilt. Chingford Mount and Highams Park have their own pages.
Semis, bungalows and a spare room
Most of Chingford was built between the wars and just after, mainly terraced and semi-detached houses with gardens, plus some detached houses, bungalows and sheltered flats. Home ownership is high. That suits live-in care: a semi with a third bedroom gives the carer the private room they need, and a bungalow solves the stairs problem before it starts.
What live-in care looks like in practice:
- One carer living in, helping with washing and dressing, meals, medication and getting about.
- Care for a couple from the same carer, where one partner needs more help than the other.
- A daily break for the carer, covered by family or planned around in the care plan.
- Dementia care that keeps a familiar routine in a familiar house.
How far is Chingford from your office, and does it matter?
By public transport it is about 70 to 80 minutes from Lewisham. Chingford station is the step-free terminus of the Overground in zone 5. The 97 and 212 buses start there, and routes such as the 179, 313, 379, 385 and 397 also serve Chingford. Parking is easier than in Walthamstow or Leyton, with fewer controlled zones.
For live-in care none of that matters, because the carer lives with you. For visits it matters a great deal: a package of three or four calls a day only works if a carer lives within reach. Tell us the times you need and we will give you a straight answer.
Coming home from hospital
Most Waltham Forest residents are treated at Whipps Cross University Hospital in Leytonstone, run by Barts Health. Some people in the north-west of Chingford may find themselves at North Middlesex University Hospital in Edmonton. Wherever the ward is, if the person is a Waltham Forest resident the council's reablement service can offer up to six weeks of free support at home first. Talk to us early in the discharge planning if you want a live-in carer ready at home; see hospital discharge support.
Does Waltham Forest Council pay for home care in Chingford?
It may contribute after two assessments. The first is a needs assessment: ring the Adult Social Care Team on 020 8496 3130 or read the council's guide to getting help. The second is a financial assessment, which looks at income and savings. People with savings above the council's limits pay for their own care, but under the Care Act statutory guidance the value of the home is not counted for care at home while the person still lives there. Funding can come as a direct payment, and NHS Continuing Healthcare can pay in full where the main need is health. We quote in writing after our assessment; our paying for care guide has the details.
Respite for Chingford carers
A live-in carer for a week or two lets a husband, wife or adult child go on holiday, have an operation or simply rest. Respite care can also be regular sit-in time. Age UK Waltham Forest, whose main office is on Hall Lane in the south of Chingford, offers information and advice and activities for older people.

Chingford questions
Questions families ask us about Chingford. If yours is not here, ask us directly.
Ask a questionDad lives in a bungalow near the forest. Is that enough room for live-in care?
If there is a second bedroom the carer can use as their own, yes. We will check the room, the bathroom and access at the assessment.
Mum was admitted to North Middlesex, not Whipps Cross. Does that change anything?
Not for us. Her care at home is still arranged through Waltham Forest Council if she lives in the borough. Tell the ward she wants to go home with support and give them our number.
Will we have to sell the house to pay for care at home?
No. The home is ignored in the financial assessment for care at home while the person lives there. Savings and income are counted. The council's financial assessment will set out exactly what applies.
Can you send a carer just for the mornings in Chingford?
Sometimes. Morning visits depend on having a carer who can reach you reliably, which is harder this far north. Call us with the times and we will say honestly whether we can do it.
