Home Care in Hampstead, NW3
Personal care, dementia care, companionship and live-in care for older people in Hampstead village, on the streets around Heath Street, Flask Walk and Church Row, and down the hill towards the Royal Free.
Yes, we provide home care in Hampstead. Live-in care is the most dependable option here, because a carer moves in and distance from our Lewisham office stops mattering. Visiting care is also possible, but it depends on having carers free to travel to NW3, so we check availability for your times before we promise anything. Every arrangement starts with a free home assessment and a written care plan.
A village on a steep hill
Hampstead is old London on a slope. The village runs up Heath Street and Hampstead High Street, with Flask Walk, Well Walk, Church Row and a web of narrow lanes and stepped alleys either side. Many older residents have lived here for decades, in Georgian and Victorian houses, the large red-brick Victorian houses of Fitzjohn's Avenue, many now divided into flats, or mansion blocks off the High Street. There are council blocks too, and the needs there can look very different from those in the house next door.
What these homes share is height. Front doors sit at the top of a flight of steps, houses rise over three or four floors, and the bathroom is rarely on the same level as the kitchen. Outside, the gradient takes over: a walk from Flask Walk down to the Royal Free on Pond Street is easy for a fit adult and hard work for anyone on a walking frame. Good care in Hampstead plans for the stairs inside the house and the hill outside it.
What a carer does on a Hampstead visit
A typical package might include help to wash and dress in the morning, medication prompts with breakfast, and an afternoon visit that is mostly company and a walk. The Heath is the obvious place for that walk, at whatever pace the person can manage. For someone living with memory loss, our dementia care keeps to the same routine and the same familiar faces as far as we can.
Henderson Court is round the corner. Age UK Camden runs a day care centre at Henderson Court, on Fitzjohn's Avenue with its entrance on Prince Arthur Road, within walking distance of Hampstead station. A day or two there each week can sit alongside care at home. See Age UK Camden's services for how to ask about a place.
How does Camden Council assess someone in Hampstead for care?
Hampstead is in the London Borough of Camden, so the route to council help goes through Camden Adult Social Care. You can make a referral with the council's online adult social care referral form, or call Contact Camden on 020 7974 4444 and say "Adult Social Care" when prompted (weekdays, 9am to 5pm). The council looks at what the person needs, then carries out a financial assessment to work out what, if anything, they pay. If savings are above the means-test limit you will pay for care yourself, but the council's needs assessment is still free and gives you a clear written account of what help is needed. Our Camden home care page covers the borough-wide picture.
If memory is the worry, ask the GP about a referral to the Camden Memory Service, the NHS assessment service for Camden residents aged 65 and over.
Getting here: the Northern line and the 268
Hampstead station, on the Edgware branch of the Northern line, is the deepest station on the Underground, and it opens straight onto the junction of Heath Street and the High Street. Hampstead Heath and Finchley Road & Frognal stations, on the Overground Mildmay line, cover the bottom of the hill. Buses 46 and 268 stop by the station. On-street parking is controlled, so carers come by Tube and bus. From Lewisham the journey is about 45 to 55 minutes, which is why we are honest that visiting care here depends on availability.
Live-in care in a Hampstead house
Hampstead has more homes with a spare bedroom than most of Camden, and that is the one firm requirement for live-in care. A live-in carer can manage the stairs alongside the person, keep the household running and support a couple together.
Respite for the family
If a husband, wife or adult child is doing most of the caring, respite care gives them a break, either as a run of visits or as a live-in carer for a week or two. We can help you plan cover around a holiday or a hospital stay.

Hampstead questions
Questions families ask us about Hampstead. If yours is not here, ask us directly.
Ask a questionMy mother's flat is up a stepped alley off Heath Street. Can a carer still help her get out?
Usually, yes. We look at the route from her front door at the assessment and plan outings around it: the flattest way down, where to rest, and whether a wheelchair or rollator is realistic on those steps.
Do you have an office in Hampstead?
No. Our only office is on Lewisham High Street. We cover Hampstead through live-in care and, where carers are available, visiting care. We tell you plainly which is possible before anything is agreed.
Can care at home sit alongside the Henderson Court day centre?
Yes. A carer can help with getting ready on day-centre mornings and be there at home on the other days. Places at Henderson Court are arranged with Age UK Camden directly.
Which hospital will my father come home from?
For most Hampstead residents it is the Royal Free on Pond Street, at the foot of the hill. Call us while the discharge is being planned, not on the day. Our hospital discharge support page explains how we work.
