Home Care in Hampstead Garden Suburb

Care at home in the Suburb's houses, cottages and closes, from Central Square and Willifield Way to Meadway, Wildwood Road and the edge of the Heath Extension, in NW11 and N2.

Yes, JNP Sidona provides home care in Hampstead Garden Suburb. Live-in care suits the many Suburb houses that have a spare bedroom, and visiting care is possible where we have a carer available, because the Suburb is reachable from our Lewisham office via Golders Green. We begin with a free home assessment and a written care plan before anything starts.

How do I arrange home care in Hampstead Garden Suburb?

  1. Call us on 0203 375 4047 or WhatsApp 07446 010486 with the address and what is getting difficult. We will say straight away whether visits look possible or whether live-in care is the realistic route.
  2. Free assessment at home with Jackie, our registered manager. She looks at the person's needs and at the house itself: the stairs, the bathroom, the way in.
  3. A written care plan, which you read and agree before any care begins, and our written quote.
  4. If the council is involved, ask Barnet's Social Care Direct (020 8359 5000) for a needs assessment. A council personal budget can be taken as a direct payment and used with us. See our Barnet home care page for how the means test works.

Adapting an Arts and Crafts house for care

Henrietta Barnett founded the Suburb in 1907 as a planned community, and it is still looked after as a whole. The houses are handsome and well built, but many were designed with steep, narrow staircases, small original bathrooms and level changes between rooms. Those are the details that decide whether someone can stay at home safely.

The complication is consent. The whole Suburb is a conservation area, and freeholders are also bound by the Hampstead Garden Suburb Trust's Scheme of Management, approved by the High Court in 1974; for most leaseholders the Trust is the ground landlord. External changes, such as a ramp to the front door, a rail on the facade or a widened doorway, need the Trust's consent. The Trust offers free advice before you apply, by email to planning@hgstrust.org, and its application process page explains the steps. Equipment inside the house, such as grab rails in the bathroom, a commode or a hospital bed, is a different matter, and is usually where we start.

Plan the adaptations early. If someone is in hospital and the plan is to come home to a house that needs a ramp, raise it with the Trust as soon as possible. Care can begin with what works inside the house while an application goes through.

No station, but two hoppa buses

The Suburb has no Tube station of its own. Golders Green and East Finchley, on the two branches of the Northern line, sit at either edge. Two small buses do the joining up. The H2 loops from Golders Green station through the Suburb, calling at Central Square, Willifield Way, Meadway and Temple Fortune Hill. The H3 runs between Golders Green and East Finchley along Hampstead Way and past Kenwood House. For our carers, Golders Green is roughly 50 to 60 minutes from Lewisham, then a short bus ride, which is why visits here are sometimes possible and Mill Hill or Edgware usually are not.

Live-in care in a Suburb house

The family houses on the larger roads usually have the spare bedroom a live-in carer needs; the smaller cottages and cottage flats on the closes often do not, so we check at the assessment. A couple can share one carer. If the household keeps a kosher kitchen or Shabbat routines, tell us at the assessment and we will plan the care and the carer's own meals around it.

Discharge from the Royal Free

Suburb residents are usually admitted to and discharged from the Royal Free Hospital on Pond Street in Hampstead. If a discharge is being planned, call us while the ward is still talking about it, so we can assess and arrange a carer for the first days home. Read how our hospital discharge support works.

Day support and breaks nearby

Age UK Barnet is based at the Ann Owens Centre on Oak Lane, East Finchley, which the H3 brings within reach, and runs dementia day sessions in East Finchley for people with mild to moderate dementia. Jewish Care runs day centres and dementia services in nearby Golders Green. For a family carer who needs time off, our respite care can be a sit-in where we can staff it, or a live-in carer for a holiday.

Hampstead Garden Suburb FAQs

Questions families ask us about Hampstead Garden Suburb. If yours is not here, ask us directly.

Ask a question
Do we need the Trust's permission to put a grab rail in the bathroom?

Trust consent covers external alterations. A rail inside the bathroom is generally not an external change, but if you are a leaseholder, check your lease, and if in doubt email the Trust for advice before work starts.

Is the Suburb in Barnet or Camden?

Hampstead Garden Suburb is in the London Borough of Barnet, even though Hampstead itself is in Camden. Council-funded care is arranged through Barnet's Social Care Direct.

Mum's cottage on a close has the only bathroom upstairs. What are the options?

We look at whether she can manage the stairs safely with help, whether a commode or washing downstairs would work and whether a stairlift is worth exploring. We will be honest if we think the stairs have become unsafe.

Can visiting carers reach us without a car?

Yes. Carers come by Northern line to Golders Green or East Finchley and then take the H2 or H3. Whether we can staff your visit times is a separate question, which we answer when you call.
