Home Care in Kilburn, NW6

Live-in care, visiting care where we can staff it, and respite for families on the Camden side of Kilburn High Road, from the Abbey estate and Belsize Road up to Kilburn Grange Park.

Yes, we provide home care in Kilburn. Live-in care is the most dependable option here, because a live-in carer moves into the home and the journey from our Lewisham office stops mattering. Visiting care is possible on the Camden side of NW6 when we have a carer free for the route, so call and we will tell you honestly whether we can cover the visits you need.

First, which side of the High Road?

Kilburn High Road is the old Roman Watling Street, now the A5, and it is also a borough boundary: Camden lies to the east and Brent to the west. Two homes a few minutes' walk apart can belong to different councils, with different adult social care teams, assessment forms and carers' services. Before anything else, check which council collects the council tax.

  • East of the High Road (Camden): the streets towards Belsize Road, Abbey Road and South Hampstead, the Abbey estate, Kilburn Grange Park beside the High Road, and the Alexandra and Ainsworth estate on Rowley Way at the NW8 edge.
  • West of the High Road (Brent): South Kilburn and Kilburn Park. For care there, contact Brent Council's adult social care. We can still help; the paperwork simply runs through Brent.

Towers, lifts and Victorian conversions

The Camden side of Kilburn is mostly council housing and Victorian terraces split into flats. The Abbey and Abbey Road estates include several high-rise towers, where a working lift is the difference between an older person getting out to the High Road and being stuck indoors. Care plans for tower flats should say what happens when the lift is out: who brings shopping up, whether a hospital appointment can still be kept, and whether a frame can manage the stairs at all.

The converted terraces raise the opposite problem: no lift, a narrow shared staircase and often a small bathroom on a half-landing. That affects bathing, whether a hoist will fit, and whether there is a spare room for a live-in carer. We look at all of this at the free home assessment before agreeing anything.

Rowley Way is unusual. The Alexandra and Ainsworth estate is built as long stepped terraces either side of a pedestrian street, so the route from a flat to a car or taxi can involve stairs and a fair walk. If your relative lives there, tell us the flat's level and its route to the street when you call, because access shapes the whole plan.

Getting to and from Kilburn

Kilburn station (Jubilee line) sits at the northern end of the High Road, Kilburn High Road station is on the Overground Lioness line, and South Hampstead (Overground) serves the streets towards Belsize Road. Many bus routes run the length of the High Road. The Jubilee line runs from London Bridge, which helps a carer coming from south-east London, but Kilburn is still a long way across the city from SE13. That is why we usually suggest live-in care here and only take on visiting rotas we know we can keep.

Services available in Kilburn

How do I get Camden Council to assess care needs in Kilburn?

For a Camden address, you can make a referral online through Camden's adult social care referral form, or call Contact Camden on 020 7974 4444 and say "Adult Social Care" when prompted (Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm). The assessment looks at what the person needs; a separate financial assessment decides what, if anything, they pay. Our Camden home care page covers the borough route in more detail, including hospital discharge from the Royal Free and University College Hospital.

How much does home care cost in Kilburn?

We do not publish prices, because the cost depends on how many visits are needed, how long they last, and whether live-in care suits the home. We quote in writing after the free assessment. Camden may fund some or all of the care after its means test, NHS Continuing Healthcare can cover care for people whose needs are mainly health needs, and a council personal budget can be taken as a direct payment and used with us. Our guide to paying for care explains each route.

Respite for Kilburn families

If you look after someone in NW6, Camden calls its carer's assessment a "carers conversation", and Camden Carers is the borough's carers' service. We can cover a planned break with a short live-in stay or a run of visits; see respite care.

Kilburn FAQs

Kilburn questions

Questions families ask us about Kilburn. If yours is not here, ask us directly.

Ask a question
My mother lives just west of Kilburn High Road. Can you still help?

Yes. Live-in care works the same on either side. The difference is that her council is Brent, so any assessment or council funding goes through Brent's adult social care team.

The lift in his tower block keeps breaking. What can a carer do?

A live-in carer is already upstairs, so personal care and meals carry on. We plan for outages at the assessment: keeping essential supplies stocked, rescheduling appointments, and reporting faults to the landlord with you.

Is there room for a live-in carer in a one-bedroom flat?

Not usually. A live-in carer needs their own bedroom. In a one-bedroom flat, visiting care, or live-in care after a move to a larger home, are the realistic options, and we will be straight with you about which is workable.

Do you have carers based in Kilburn?

We do not have an office or local team in Camden; our office is in Lewisham. Live-in carers move in, and visiting cover depends on which carers are available for the route, so ask us before you plan around it.
