Swiss Cottage Home Care

Care at home for older and disabled adults in the Chalcots towers, the purpose-built blocks off Finchley Road and the mansion flats around Eton Avenue, NW3 and NW6.

Yes, JNP Sidona can provide care at home in Swiss Cottage. We offer live-in care anywhere in the area. Visiting care depends on having a carer free to make the journey from south-east London at the times you need, so we confirm that before care is agreed. We start with a free assessment at home, then write a care plan with you.

Flats with lifts, and what happens when the lift stops

Swiss Cottage is mostly flats. There are red-brick mansion blocks and Victorian houses split into flats around Eton Avenue and the streets between Finchley Road and Fitzjohn's Avenue, and purpose-built blocks around the junction. Along Adelaide Road stand the five towers of the Chalcots Estate, a council estate of more than 700 flats whose residents were evacuated in June 2017 for fire-safety works after Grenfell.

For a wheelchair user or someone with a walking frame, a high-rise flat with a working lift can be easier than a Victorian walk-up: one level throughout, a wider front door and room to turn. The risk is the lift itself. If it breaks down, someone on the fifteenth floor cannot get out, and a carer may face the stairs. Care plans in a tower need a fallback, so at the assessment we ask who to call about the lift, which neighbours can help, and what to do if a visit has to be done on foot.

Hoists and equipment in high-rise flats. A hoist, profiling bed or commode has to fit through the lift and round the corridor. Ask Camden Adult Social Care for an occupational therapy assessment before the equipment is ordered. It saves a delivery that will not fit.

What care is available in Swiss Cottage?

The full range of our services is available here, subject to carer availability for visits:

We are registered with the CQC to support adults with physical disabilities and sensory impairments as well as older people, which matters in an area with so many flats on one level. For people with long-term conditions, complex care is planned around the routines their health team has set.

Getting there: the Jubilee line and Finchley Road

Swiss Cottage station is on the Jubilee line, and Finchley Road station, a few minutes north by the O2 Centre, has both the Jubilee and Metropolitan lines. Buses are frequent along Finchley Road and Avenue Road, including the 13, 31, 46, 113, 187, 268 and C11. Parking is controlled and the Finchley Road junction is heavy with traffic, so carers come by Tube. From Lewisham, the Jubilee line from London Bridge gives a direct ride once a carer reaches it.

The Belsize Priory Medical Practice, at the Abbey Centre on Belsize Road (NW6 4BJ), is one of the GP surgeries serving the NW6 side. The Royal Free on Pond Street is the usual hospital for this part of Camden.

Council-funded care and direct payments

To ask Camden Council for help, use the online adult social care referral or call Contact Camden on 020 7974 4444 and ask for Adult Social Care. After a needs assessment and a financial assessment, the council may arrange care itself or offer a direct payment so you can choose your own provider. People who take a direct payment can get help managing it from PeoplePlus, the service Camden commissions for this, via your social worker. If you have concerns about local health or care services, Healthwatch Camden takes feedback. More on the borough is on our Camden home care page.

Live-in care and short breaks

Live-in care works in a two-bedroom flat as easily as in a house, provided the carer has their own room, so check whether there is a spare bedroom first. Respite can be a short live-in stay while a family carer is away, or regular visits that give them a few hours back each week.

Swiss Cottage FAQs

Common questions from Swiss Cottage

Questions families ask us about Swiss Cottage. If yours is not here, ask us directly.

Ask a question
What happens to a care visit if the lift in my block is out of action?

The carer still comes and uses the stairs where it is safe. We agree a plan for lift failures at the assessment, including what happens if the person cannot get downstairs for an appointment.

Can you support a younger adult with a physical disability, not just older people?

Yes. Our CQC registration covers adults under 65 with physical disabilities and sensory impairments. Care is built around work, study or whatever the person's week looks like.

I get a direct payment from Camden. Can I use it with you?

You can use a direct payment to buy care from a registered provider like us. Check with your social worker that the support plan allows it, and we will send a written quote after our assessment.

Do you have a supported living home that is easy to reach from Swiss Cottage?

Our nearest is in Uxbridge, a direct Metropolitan line ride from Finchley Road with no change. Our other two homes are in Whitton and Kingston. A placement funded by Camden needs the social worker's agreement; see our supported living page for Camden residents.

Which postcodes count as Swiss Cottage?

Mostly NW3, with the area west of Finchley Road and along Belsize Road in NW6. If you are near the Kilburn or South Hampstead edge, check you are on the Camden side, because that decides which council to contact.
