Home Care in St John's Wood, NW8

Care at home in the villas of Hamilton Terrace and Grove End Road, the mansion blocks around Lord's, and the streets off St John's Wood High Street.

Yes, we provide home care in St John's Wood. Because so many NW8 homes are whole houses or large flats, live-in care is often the most practical arrangement here. Visits for personal care, medication and company are also possible when we have a carer available for your times. Every package starts with a free home assessment and a written care plan.

A part of Westminster with whole houses

Most of Westminster is flats. St John's Wood is the exception. It was built up in the early nineteenth century as one of London's first suburbs of detached and semi-detached villas, and many still stand on Hamilton Terrace, Grove End Road, Abbey Road and the roads around Lord's Cricket Ground. Between them are large purpose-built mansion blocks, many with porters and lifts, and towards Lisson Grove there is council housing.

That mix gives older residents in NW8 more choice than most of the borough:

  • Houses: usually a spare bedroom for a carer, room for a stairlift and space for equipment, but often three or four floors and front steps.
  • Mansion blocks with porters: lifts, step-free entrances and a porter who can let a carer in, which makes visiting care straightforward.
  • Council blocks towards Lisson Grove: smaller flats where live-in care is harder to fit, and visits are the usual pattern.

Is live-in care practical in a St John's Wood house?

Usually, yes. The one practical requirement for a live-in carer is a bedroom of their own, and most NW8 houses can provide one. The carer also needs proper breaks each day, which we plan with the family. For a couple, one live-in carer can support both partners: full personal care for one, practical help and company for the other.

Live-in care also solves the distance problem. Our office is in Lewisham, and while the Jubilee line runs straight from London Bridge to St John's Wood station, several short visits a day are harder for us to staff this far north. Once a carer lives in, travel stops mattering. Visits are still worth asking about, and we will tell you honestly whether we can cover the times you need.

Going out is part of the care. Regent's Park is on the doorstep, and St John's Wood High Street is small and walkable. A companionship visit can be a supported walk to the shops or a slow loop of the park. On match days at Lord's, St John's Wood station and the surrounding roads get very busy, so carers plan trips out around the fixtures.

Coming home from St Mary's

St Mary's Hospital in Paddington is the usual A&E and discharge hospital for NW8. If someone is admitted, ask the ward early what support is planned for discharge and tell them that care at home will follow. Call us at the same time, so the assessment and the first days at home can be organised while they are still an inpatient. Local GP practices include Wellington Health Centre at 16 Wellington Road and Lisson Grove Health Centre on Gateforth Street. The GP is the starting point for community nursing and for a memory assessment with the Westminster Memory Service.

Asking Westminster for help

St John's Wood is in the City of Westminster, whose adult social care service is shared with Kensington and Chelsea. A needs assessment can be requested on the council's online referral form or by phoning 020 7641 2500. If savings are above the council's upper limit the person will usually pay for their own care, but an assessment is still worth having: it records what support is needed, and the council can advise on equipment and adaptations. We quote in writing after our own assessment and don't publish fixed prices. If you look after someone yourself, Westminster explains carers' assessments and the Carer's Personal Budget on its support for carers page. Our home care in Westminster page covers the rest of the borough.

Short-term cover

If you are the main carer and need a holiday or a hospital stay of your own, respite care lets a live-in carer move in for a week or two and keep the routine going.

NW8 questions

Questions families ask us about St John's Wood. If yours is not here, ask us directly.

Ask a question
My parents both need some help. Can one carer look after them in their house?

Often, yes. One live-in carer can support a couple where needs are moderate. If both need a lot of hands-on care, especially at night, we will say so at the assessment and talk through a second carer or extra visits.

Mum's block has a porter. Does that help?

It does. A porter can let carers in and take deliveries, and it can avoid the need for a key safe. We agree the arrangements with the porter or managing agent when care starts.

Is all of NW8 in Westminster?

Most of it, but not every street. A few addresses at the northern edge of NW8 are in Camden. We cover both, but the council assessment and funding come from whichever council the address is in.

Can you care for someone at the end of life at home in St John's Wood?

Yes. Our palliative care provides personal care and company alongside the GP, district nurses and any hospice team involved. Live-in care is often the best fit for end-of-life care in a family house.

How do your carers get to St John's Wood?

By public transport. From south-east London the Jubilee line runs directly from London Bridge to St John's Wood station, the 13 and 113 stop at St John's Wood station and Lord's, and the 139 and 189 come up from Church Street and Lisson Grove past Lord's.
