Home Care in Holloway, N7
Visiting and live-in care along the Holloway Road and around the Nag's Head, on the estates between Caledonian Road and the Emirates, and in the converted terraces off Seven Sisters Road and Camden Road.
Yes, we can provide home care in Holloway. Live-in care works anywhere in N7, because the carer lives with your relative. Visiting care is possible but depends on carer availability, since Holloway is around 45 to 55 minutes from our Lewisham office by public transport. Either way, it begins with a free home assessment by Jackie, our registered manager.
Where Islington's help is based
Holloway has a large share of the borough's support for older people and carers, which is useful to know before you start arranging care. All of these are in N7:
- Age UK Islington, 6-9 Manor Gardens, off Holloway Road (N7 6LA). Advice, benefits help, practical support and dementia support. Helpline 020 7281 6018.
- Islington Carers Hub, in the same building. Run by Age UK Islington for the council, it carries out carers' assessments and helps unpaid carers get a break. 020 7281 3319.
- Islington Memory Service, Blenheim Court, 62 Brewery Road (N7 9NY), run by North London NHS Foundation Trust. Referral is through the GP or hospital, and it makes home visits for people who are housebound.
- Alsen Day Centre, 71 Durham Road (N7 7DS), a council day centre for older people with moderate to severe disabilities, reached through a social care assessment. It is known for its Greek-speaking attenders and staff.
- Dementia cafés at Lennox House, 75 Durham Road (Care UK), and the Minds Together Cafe at Goodinge Community Centre, both listed by Age UK Islington.
We are a private provider, separate from all of these. We provide the care in between: washing, dressing, meals and medication at home.
Estate living and the lift
Much of Holloway is post-war council and housing association estates, including tower blocks, alongside Victorian terraces split into flats. Many older residents have been in the same flat for decades and do not want to move. In a block, the lift is what matters most: when it works, someone in a wheelchair can get out and an ambulance crew can bring them home; when it is out, a fourth-floor flat becomes a trap. At the assessment we ask about the lift, plan for what happens when it fails, and check that the carer can get in through the main door and the flat door, often with a key safe.
The former Holloway Prison site on Parkhurst Road is being redeveloped for housing. Where an older relative moves into a new flat with a lift and a level-access shower, personal care becomes much simpler.
Lots of buses, few parking spaces. The Nag's Head is one of the best-connected spots in north London: stops there are served by the 4, 17, 19, 21, 29, 43, 91, 153, 253, 254, 259, 263 and 393. Holloway Road and Caledonian Road stations are on the Piccadilly line, and Upper Holloway is on the Overground Suffragette line. Our carers travel this way; parking on residents' streets is controlled for most of the day.
Who pays for home care in Holloway?
Either you pay privately, or Islington Council pays some or all of it after a needs assessment and a financial assessment. Ask for an assessment on 020 7527 2299 or through the council's online form. If your relative is eligible, the council can arrange care itself or give them direct payments, money they use to buy care from a provider they choose, which can be us. The council's Direct Payments team is on 020 7527 8164. We give a written quote after our own assessment, and publish no prices. Our Islington home care page covers the council route in full.
Live-in care in N7
A live-in carer needs a bedroom of their own, so live-in care suits the larger flats and the terraced houses that are still whole. Distance from Lewisham makes no difference to it. See live-in care.
A break for the family
If you care for someone in Holloway, start with a carer's assessment through the council or the Carers Hub on Manor Gardens. For the time you are away, we can provide a short live-in stay or extra visits. See respite care.

Holloway FAQs
Questions families ask us about Holloway. If yours is not here, ask us directly.
Ask a questionAge UK Islington already helps my father. Why would he need you as well?
Age UK Islington gives advice, benefits help and some practical support, but it is not a personal care agency. If he now needs help washing, dressing, taking medication or eating, that is regulated personal care, which is what we provide. The two work well side by side.
The lift in Mum's block keeps breaking. What happens to her visits?
The carer takes the stairs, so the visit goes ahead. The real risk is to your mother if she needs to go out or is unwell while the lift is down. We note that in her care plan, and repeated failures are worth reporting to the landlord, with her social worker copied in if she has one.
Mum speaks mainly Greek. Can you send a Greek-speaking carer?
We cannot promise a carer who speaks a particular language. Tell us at the assessment and we will be honest about who is available. Whoever cares for her will learn her routines, her food and how she likes things done, and we can write key phrases into her care plan.
Dad is waiting to be seen by the Memory Service on Brewery Road. Can care start before the diagnosis?
Yes. Care is based on what he needs help with now, not on a diagnosis. We can start visits and adjust the plan once the Memory Service has seen him.
