Home Care in Stroud Green, N4 and N8

Visiting care, live-in care and respite in the converted Victorian streets between Finsbury Park and Crouch Hill.

Yes, we provide home care in Stroud Green. With Finsbury Park on the Victoria line, it is one of the easier parts of north London to reach from our Lewisham office, so visiting care is realistic here, subject to carer availability. Where the home has a spare bedroom, live-in care is the other route, and either way we start with a free home assessment.

Which side of Stroud Green Road are you on?

Stroud Green is split between two councils, and Stroud Green Road forms part of the boundary. The streets to the east, towards Ferme Park Road and the railway, are in Haringey; much of the ground to the west, around Hanley Road and Tollington Park, is in Islington. N4 covers both, so check the council tax bill.

Our care is the same on either side. What changes is who assesses and who might fund it:

Flats over shops, flats over flats

The Haringey side is almost entirely late-Victorian, from small terraced houses to large semis on streets such as Ossian Road. Few are still single homes: most have been split into flats, and Stroud Green Road has flats above its shops.

That shapes care in three ways:

  • Stairs with no lift. Upper-floor conversions usually mean a steep, narrow internal staircase where a stairlift may not fit and hoists need careful measuring. We check this at the assessment and can point you to the council's occupational therapy route.
  • Small bathrooms. Bathrooms squeezed into conversions rarely take a level-access shower, which matters for personal care.
  • No second bedroom. A one-bedroom flat cannot host a live-in carer, so visiting care or a sit-in service is often the workable plan.

Parking for carers. Haringey's Stroud Green CPZ operates only from noon to 2pm on weekdays. The Finsbury Park zones nearer the station run 8.30am to 6.30pm Monday to Saturday, and longer on Emirates Stadium match days and park events, so a carer who drives may need a visitor permit there. Hours are on Haringey's CPZ hours page.

Getting here, and getting to hospital

Finsbury Park station (Victoria, Piccadilly, Great Northern) is at the bottom of Stroud Green Road, Crouch Hill (Overground Suffragette line) near the top, and Harringay (Great Northern) on the eastern edge. From Lewisham it is roughly 45 minutes to an hour to Finsbury Park, and the W3 and W7 climb Stroud Green Road from there.

The usual acute hospital is the Whittington at Archway, and the 210 bus runs from Finsbury Park via Stapleton Hall Road and Crouch Hill station to a stop at the hospital itself. If someone is coming home and will need help, tell the ward that care is being arranged and call us as early as you can; see hospital discharge support.

A carer can collect repeat prescriptions from the GP or a Stroud Green Road pharmacy as part of medication support.

Outside the front door

The Parkland Walk, a former railway line now a local nature reserve, runs along the northern edge of Stroud Green. Its gentle old railway gradient is rare in these hills, which makes it a good short outing with a companionship carer, with a cafe stop on Stroud Green Road on the way home.

Live-in care in Stroud Green

In a house that is still whole, or a flat with two bedrooms, live-in care works well: travel time stops mattering and one carer can support a couple. The carer needs their own room and proper daily breaks, which we build into the care plan.

Respite for family carers

Respite care can be regular sitting visits so you get a few hours out, or a live-in carer for a week or two while you go away. If the person you care for lives in Haringey, Carers First (0300 303 1555) offers support and the council offers a carer's assessment. Our supported living homes in Whitton, Kingston and Uxbridge also take some short stays.

How much does home care cost in Stroud Green?

We quote after the free assessment, because the cost depends on the visits needed or whether live-in care fits; we do not publish prices. If Haringey or Islington finds the person eligible, that council's financial assessment sets what they contribute. Where needs are mainly health needs, the NHS may pay in full through NHS Continuing Healthcare, which is not means-tested. See our paying for care guide.

Stroud Green questions

Questions families ask us about Stroud Green. If yours is not here, ask us directly.

Ask a question
My mother lives on Stroud Green Road itself. Which council do I contact?

It depends which side of the road her front door is on. Check her council tax bill, then use that council's route above. Private care can start either way.

Dad is in a second-floor conversion with no lift. Can he still have care at home?

Usually, yes. Carers manage the stairs; the question is whether he can. We look at the staircase, bathroom and bedroom at the assessment and say plainly if equipment needs discussing with an occupational therapist.

Can a carer go with her to the Whittington for appointments?

Yes, as part of a planned visit, by the 210 from Crouch Hill station or by taxi. Give us the appointment time so we can plan around it.

Is a one-bedroom flat on Ossian Road big enough for live-in care?

No. A live-in carer needs a bedroom of their own, so in a one-bedroom flat we would plan visiting care or sit-in hours.
