Home Care in Angel, N1 and EC1V

Visiting and live-in care for people living around the Angel junction: off Upper Street and Chapel Market, on the Packington estate, and in the walk-up blocks between Pentonville Road and City Road.

Yes, we provide home care in Angel, and visiting care is realistic here. Angel is one of the easiest parts of north London to reach from our Lewisham office: a carer can take the train or DLR to London Bridge or Bank and the Northern line up to Angel in about 30 to 35 minutes. Every package starts with a free home assessment by Jackie, our registered manager, and a written care plan.

Behind Upper Street

Most people know Angel as the meeting of Upper Street, Pentonville Road and City Road, with Camden Passage, the Business Design Centre and the stalls of Chapel Market. Few of the older people we would care for live on those shopping streets. They live a turn or two away: in Georgian and Victorian terraces long since divided into flats, on council estates such as the rebuilt Packington estate off Essex Road, and in older mansion and walk-up blocks south towards EC1V.

That housing decides a lot about care. A second-floor flat in a walk-up block has no lift, so a fall or a hospital stay can leave someone unable to get down to the street. A converted terrace often has a narrow bathroom where a shower seat fits and a hoist does not. At the assessment we look at the stairs, the bathroom and the front door before we talk about visit times, and we tell you if the council's occupational therapist should be involved for rails or equipment.

Can a carer get to Angel every day without a car?

Yes, and that is how our carers would travel. Driving is the hard part of Angel: south of Pentonville Road and City Road you are inside the Congestion Charge zone, the whole borough is in the ULEZ, and residents' bays are controlled through the working day. Public transport is the opposite. Angel station is on the Northern line (Bank branch), and the stops by the station are served by the 4, 43, 56, 205, 214, 274 and 394 buses, with the 30, 73, 153 and 476 calling around Chapel Market.

That makes several visits a day more workable here than further north, though it still depends on which carers are free at the times you need.

Sight loss and Moorfields. Moorfields Eye Hospital is a short walk along City Road, and it has its own eye A&E. Sensory impairment is one of our registered specialisms. A carer can help with eye drops as part of medication support, keep a flat laid out the way someone with low vision needs it, and go with them to appointments when the care plan includes it.

Hospitals people come home from

Residents in this south-western corner of Islington are often treated at University College Hospital on Euston Road, as well as the Whittington in Archway. If your relative is on a ward and will need help at home, tell the discharge team early that you are arranging private care and call us at the same time. Our hospital discharge page explains what we need from you.

How much does home care cost in Angel?

We do not publish a price list. We give a written quote after the free assessment, once we know how many visits are needed and what they involve. If you want Islington Council's help with the cost, the first step is a needs assessment: request one through the council's online form or on 020 7527 2299 (Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm). A financial assessment then decides what you contribute. The council also has an online cost of care calculator that gives a rough idea before you apply. Our Islington home care page covers the council route in more detail.

Live-in care and short breaks

Live-in care needs a spare bedroom for the carer, which many Angel flats do not have. Where there is one, a live-in carer moves in and the journey stops mattering. Where there is not, a family carer can still get a break: we can step up visits for a week or two while you are away. See respite care.

Angel FAQs

Angel questions

Questions families ask us about Angel. If yours is not here, ask us directly.

Ask a question
Dad lives on the third floor of a block with no lift. Can visiting care still work?

Usually, as long as he is safe moving around the flat. The carer climbs the stairs; he may not. The bigger question is whether he can get out at all, and what would happen after a fall. We look at that honestly at the assessment, and if a move to a ground-floor or lift-served flat is worth raising with his landlord, we will say so.

Could a carer take Mum shopping at Chapel Market?

Yes. An accompanied trip to the market or the shops on Upper Street can be part of a companionship or home help visit, with the carer helping her choose, carry and put things away.

My aunt is a Moorfields patient. Can you help with her eye drops?

Yes. Eye drops are a common part of medication support. We follow the prescription and record each dose on her medication chart, and we can time visits around the drops she needs.

Do you cover the EC1V side of Angel as well as N1?

Yes: the streets south of Pentonville Road and City Road towards Clerkenwell, and the N1 streets around Islington Green, Duncan Terrace and the Packington estate.
