Home Care in Crouch End, N8
Live-in and visiting care around the Broadway and the clock tower, up Crouch Hill and Crouch End Hill, and along Park Road and Middle Lane towards Hornsey.
Yes, we can arrange home care in Crouch End, beginning with a free home assessment by Jackie, our registered manager, and a written care plan. Live-in care is the most reliable option here, because the carer moves in and the journey from our Lewisham office stops mattering. Visiting care is possible but harder to staff: Crouch End has no station, and the trip from SE13 takes around 60 to 75 minutes, so ask us about specific times.
A village in a bowl of hills
Crouch End sits in a hollow between Highgate, Muswell Hill and Stroud Green, and every way out of it is uphill. At the centre is the Broadway's red-brick clock tower, put up in 1895 as a memorial to Henry Reader Williams, the local council chairman who campaigned to save Highgate Wood and Queen's Wood. Across the road is Hornsey Town Hall, the Grade II* listed modernist building of 1935, which reopened in 2025 after a long restoration.
It is a popular place for young families, but a good share of the people living in the big houses bought them decades ago. They know the shops, the library and the cafés, and keeping them part of that daily life is a real aim of care here.
Upstairs flats and long staircases
The large late-Victorian and Edwardian houses in N8 were mostly built for one family, and many have since been split into flats. That creates a particular problem: the upper-floor flat with its own front door at street level and a long, steep internal staircase behind it. There is no lift, and often no room on the stairs for a stairlift.
If your parent lives in a flat like that, the assessment looks hard at the stairs. Can they get out safely with a carer beside them? Is a key safe needed so the carer can let themselves in? Can the bathroom take a shower seat? The council's occupational therapist can assess for equipment and adaptations. A converted flat rarely has a spare room, so live-in care usually works best in the houses that are still whole.
Can a carer get to Crouch End without a car?
Yes, by bus. The W5, W7, 41 and 91 connect Crouch End with Finsbury Park and Archway, both on the Tube. Crouch Hill station (Overground Suffragette line) and Hornsey station (Great Northern) are a walk away. For carers who drive, parking is easier than in central Haringey: Crouch End A is controlled from 10am to noon on weekdays and Crouch End B from 2pm to 4pm, so a visit can often be timed around the controlled hours.
Dementia support close by
The council's Haynes Dementia Hub is on Park Road, N8, at the Hornsey end of Crouch End (020 8489 5925). It runs a day service for people with moderate or severe dementia, a day opportunities hub, and a relatives' support group. Diagnosis comes through the GP and the NHS Haringey Memory Service at St Ann's Hospital. Our dementia care fits around both: a carer who gets someone ready for a hub day, or company at home on the other days.
Discharge from the Whittington. The Whittington Hospital in Archway is the usual hospital for Crouch End, and Whittington Health also runs Haringey's community health services, including district nursing. If your relative will need care after a stay, tell the ward early that you are arranging it privately and call us at the same time. Our hospital discharge page explains what we need.
Does Haringey Council fund home care in Crouch End?
If your relative is eligible after a needs assessment, and depending on a financial assessment, yes. Request one through the council's assessments page or on 020 8489 1400. Homeowners with savings above the threshold usually pay for their own care, though the value of the house is not counted while they live in it. We give a written quote after our assessment and publish no price list. Our Haringey home care page explains the council route in more detail.
Respite for the family
If you are the one doing the caring, a live-in carer can take over for a week or two while you rest or go away. See respite care. Carers First runs Haringey's support service for unpaid carers.

Asked about Crouch End
Questions families ask us about Crouch End. If yours is not here, ask us directly.
Ask a questionMum's flat is on the first floor of a converted house, up a long staircase. Can she stay there?
Often, yes, but it depends on how safely she manages the stairs and whether she can get out at all. We look at this at the assessment, and the council's occupational therapist can advise on rails and equipment. If she is effectively housebound, we will say so and plan around it.
Could you visit four times a day in Crouch End?
That is hard to staff here, because it is a long journey for carers and there is no station. Fewer, longer visits are more realistic, and for someone who needs help across the whole day, live-in care is usually the better fit. Ask us and we will be straight about it.
Can a carer take Dad to the Haynes Dementia Hub?
A carer can get him ready and, where agreed in the care plan, go with him. A place at the hub's day service is arranged through a social worker, GP or the council, and is means-tested.
Is the house counted if Mum pays for her own care at home?
Not while she lives in it. For care at home, the council's financial assessment ignores the home she lives in. Savings and income are assessed.
Our road is right on the Islington boundary. Which council do we contact?
The council for the address, which you can check with the postcode on the Haringey or Islington website. Parts of Stroud Green and Crouch Hill fall on the Islington side. Our care is the same either way.
