Home Care Along Ladbroke Grove, W10 and W11
Visits, dementia care and live-in support for people living on and around Ladbroke Grove, from the crescents near Holland Park Avenue up to St Charles Square and the canal.
Yes, we provide care at home for people living along Ladbroke Grove, in both W11 and W10. That can be regular visits for personal care, meals and medication, or a live-in carer if there's a spare room. It begins with a free assessment by Jackie, our registered manager. Because we travel from Lewisham, visiting care here depends on which carers are available, so please ask.
One road, two very different halves
Ladbroke Grove runs for roughly a mile and a half, from Holland Park Avenue in the south, over the hill, under the Westway and across the Grand Union Canal to the Harrow Road at Kensal Green. The care we'd plan for a flat near the bottom is rarely the same as for a flat near the top, because the buildings are so different.
South of the Westway (W11)
The southern stretch passes through the Ladbroke Estate, the curved stucco crescents and villas laid out around private communal gardens, such as Lansdowne Crescent and Elgin Crescent near St John's Church at the top of the hill. Nearly all are divided into flats. Expect front steps, no lift, a long internal stair and a compact bathroom. Getting a shower chair or a commode in is usually fine. A hoist or a hospital bed needs measuring first.
North of the Westway (W10)
Past Ladbroke Grove station the road runs alongside council and housing association estates, St Charles Square and streets of smaller Victorian terraces before it crosses the canal. Here the questions are about lifts, entry phones and bathrooms with a bath that someone can no longer step into. A bath board, a seat or a level-access shower can make carers' visits safer; the council's occupational therapists can assess for these.
Health services just off the Grove
Two community bases sit within a few minutes of the road, and families are often referred to them without being told where they are:
- St Charles Centre for Health and Wellbeing, Exmoor Street, W10. The Kensington and Chelsea Older People Community Mental Health Team is based here (020 3317 4242), working with older people with dementia, depression or other mental health needs.
- Pall Mall Centre, 150 Barlby Road, W10. Home to the North Kensington and Chelsea Community Mental Health Hub (020 8206 6900).
Both are run by Central and North West London NHS Foundation Trust with council social workers. If someone we care for is under one of these teams, we'll work to their advice, for example on routines, medication prompts or warning signs to report.
Getting out matters here. The north end of Portobello Road and Golborne Road market are a short walk east of the Grove. For someone who now struggles to go out alone, a carer's arm and a coffee by the market is as much part of good care as a wash and breakfast. Book it as a companionship visit.
Does the council pay for home care on Ladbroke Grove?
Ladbroke Grove is in the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea. The council will carry out a needs assessment and, if care is needed, a financial assessment of what you should contribute. Ring 020 7361 3013 on weekdays or ask the GP to refer. Health-led needs may qualify for NHS Continuing Healthcare. For private care from us, we put a written quote in front of you after our free assessment; we don't price over the phone. See our Kensington and Chelsea page for direct payments and the borough-wide route.
Stations and buses
Ladbroke Grove station, beside the Westway, is on the Hammersmith & City and Circle lines, and buses 7, 23, 52, 70, 228 and 295 stop nearby. At the southern end, Holland Park (Central line) and Notting Hill Gate (Central, District, Circle) are both a short walk. Further north, the 7, 23, 52, 70, 228 and 295 all continue up the Grove past St Charles Square and Barlby Road. From our Lewisham office, expect around 50 to 65 minutes. Street parking is residents-only, so carers who drive pay to park.
Live-in care and respite
The bigger flats in the southern crescents and family-sized homes further north can sometimes take a live-in carer, who needs their own bedroom. For someone with dementia who shouldn't be left alone in the house, that can be what keeps them at home. For family carers, a short live-in stay can cover a holiday; the council or a carer's assessment may help fund breaks. See respite care.

Ladbroke Grove: your questions
Questions families ask us about Ladbroke Grove. If yours is not here, ask us directly.
Ask a questionMy father is under the older people's mental health team at St Charles. Can you work with them?
Yes. With his consent, or that of his attorney, we'll follow the team's guidance in his care plan and let them or you know about any changes we notice.
Mum's flat is in one of the crescents with a private communal garden. Can a carer take her out into it?
Check the garden committee's rules first, since each communal garden sets its own. If a carer may go in with her, we'll need access to the garden gate or a key, the same as for the front door.
Which council covers the very top of Ladbroke Grove?
The road itself is in Kensington and Chelsea all the way up to the Harrow Road. Kensal Green and Kensal Rise, just beyond, are mostly in Brent. If you're near the boundary, the council tax bill tells you which council to call.
Can a carer stay overnight occasionally, for example after a hospital appointment?
Ask us. Sit-in and overnight support depend on staffing, so we can't guarantee it, but we'll tell you honestly what we can arrange for a given date.
