Home Care in Orpington

Care at home across BR5 and BR6, from the High Street and the Walnuts out to Crofton, Goddington, Ramsden, Chelsfield, Farnborough and Green Street Green.

We can arrange home care in Orpington, including visits for personal care, medication and meals, support after a hospital stay, and live-in care. Southeastern trains and the 208 bus both run direct from Lewisham, where our office is, so visits are possible here when we have a carer free for your times; live-in care is available across BR5 and BR6. We begin with a free home assessment and a written care plan.

Two hospitals on your side of the borough

Orpington families tend to know two NHS sites well, and both are in BR6. The Princess Royal University Hospital on Farnborough Common is Bromley's main acute hospital, with the borough's A&E. Orpington Hospital on Sevenoaks Road began as a First World War military hospital and now provides rehabilitation, therapy, outpatient and diagnostic services, including a frailty unit, but no A&E. Both are run by King's College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust.

For some patients the route home runs through both: an admission to the PRUH, then a period of rehab before discharge. The point to contact us is when a home date starts being discussed, not the day before. We can plan the first visits around what the therapists have been working on, so the exercises and routines carry on at home. Read more about our support after a hospital stay.

How much does home care cost in Orpington?

We do not publish prices, because the cost depends on how many visits are needed, how long they are and what happens during them. We give a written quote after the free assessment. You can pay privately, or look for help with the cost. If you want Bromley Council to contribute, ask for a needs assessment through the council's adult social care page or on 020 8461 7777; a financial assessment then decides how much the person pays towards council-arranged care. If the council does fund care, its Integrated Direct Payments Service can explain how to receive the money and choose your own provider. Where needs are mainly medical, ask the hospital or GP about NHS Continuing Healthcare. The wider council and hospital picture for the borough is on our Bromley home care page.

Semis, bungalows and a spare room

Orpington is mostly interwar and post-war semis, detached houses and bungalows, with newer flats around the station and the High Street. For care, the bungalows are the easy case: everything on one floor and usually room to turn a wheelchair or walking frame. In a two-storey semi, the question is whether the bathroom and bedroom can stay upstairs, whether a stairlift is needed, or whether life moves downstairs for a while after a fall. Rooms are generally a reasonable size, which helps if a hoist or hospital bed arrives after a discharge.

Saxon Day Centre, Lych Gate Road. Age Concern Orpington & District runs the Saxon Day Centre at Lych Gate Road, BR6 0TJ (01689 830055), for older people including those living with frailty or dementia. Day-centre days and home care fit together: a morning visit to get someone washed, dressed and ready, and a later call once they are home.

Getting there

Orpington station has Southeastern trains to Cannon Street and Charing Cross through Grove Park and Lewisham, to Victoria through Bromley South, and Thameslink services. Chelsfield station serves the south-east side. Buses include the 51, 61, 208, 353 and 358, plus the R-numbered local routes that link the estates and villages around the town. The further south and east you go, the more visits depend on a carer who drives.

Living in, or a break for the family

Spare bedrooms are common in Orpington houses, so live-in care is usually straightforward, and it suits a couple well when one partner needs help and the other wants to stay in the family home. For family carers, the council offers a carer's assessment and Bromley Well (0808 278 7898) provides carer advice and support. Our respite care can be a few hours each week or a live-in carer for a holiday.

Orpington FAQs

Orpington FAQs

Questions families ask us about Orpington. If yours is not here, ask us directly.

Ask a question
Dad is in the frailty unit at Orpington Hospital. Can you be ready when he comes home?

Tell us as soon as the ward mentions a date. We will arrange the assessment, ideally before discharge, and confirm whether we can cover the visit times he needs. We will not promise a start date until we know we have the carer.

Do you cover Green Street Green, Pratt's Bottom and the villages south of the town?

Green Street Green, Goddington, Chelsfield, Farnborough and Pratt's Bottom are all in our area for live-in care. For visits further out, it depends on whether we have a carer who drives free at the right times, so please call and ask.

Mum lives in a bungalow in Crofton. Does that make care simpler?

Usually. Single-level living takes away the stairs, which is the biggest risk in most homes. We still look at the bathroom, the doorways and the route to the front door when we assess.

Could a carer help her get ready for the Saxon Day Centre?

Yes. A morning visit can be timed around the centre's days. Her place there is arranged with Age Concern Orpington & District directly.

Can you continue the exercises the physio gave him?

Carers can prompt and support exercises that a physiotherapist or occupational therapist has set, once they are written into the care plan. We do not design therapy programmes ourselves.
